(OK, I’m nothing even vaguely like a recapper, & this is over a month old, but nobody seems to have mentioned it, & a few interesting things happened.)

WWA Reckoning
from Auckland, New Zealand, 5/25/03 (PPV broadcast 6/8/03)

Open with Maori dancers in ring.

1) Mark Mercedes (h) vs. Rick Steiner (f) :
Mercedes is apparently Australian, generating heel heat from the New Zealand crowd. Mercedes doing a few more wrestling moves, Steiner mostly brawling. Lots of crowd involvement.
Steiner wins with top rope bulldog (3:50)

Our hosts are Glen Gilberti aka Disco Inferno & Jeremy Borash.

Arena lights go out, & eventually we find Sting up in the rafters. He delivers a brief promo on Jeff Jarrett for their match later, & generates some local cheap pops.

2) Puppet vs. Meatball vs. Teo : 3-way Dance
Teo wins with Swanton Bomb on Meatball, then does Rikishi’s happy dance (3:06)

Promos by Johnny Swinger & Frankie Kazarian.

3) Devon Storm vs. Konnan : Hardcore Match
Gilberti complains that there’s too many wrestling moves & not enough violence. They brawl up to the stage, where Konnan hits Storm with a styrofoam Polynesian Phallic God; Storm tosses Konnan into the set, which also appears to be styrofoam. Storm set up a contrived steel railings & steps arrangement against the ring apron. Konnan attempts to toss Storm into the railing, which half-misses, just knocking things over. The crowd eagerly anticipates the opportunity to chant “Holy shit”. Storm sets the arrangement back up, & Konnan obliges by laying on it.
Storm wins with an over the top dive onto Konnan on the laid-out barrier. (10:12)

Promos by Chris Sabin (NWA:TNA X Division Champion) & Jerry Lynn (WWA Cruiserweight Champion).

4) Johnny Swinger vs. Frankie Kazarian vs. Chris Sabin vs. Jerry Lynn :
Fatal 4-Way, for both the WWA Cruiserweight Championship & the NWA:TNA X Division Championship

This was an incredible match. Would be a definite MOTYC, if only anybody besides Edge & I had seen it. Yes, a 4-way thing that was amazingly good. All 4 of the guys were involved pretty much constantly, they were hitting beautiful spots, & constantly flowing from one move to the next. Lots of amazing 3- & 4-way moves.

  • Opening foray ends with all 4 guys simultaneously drop-kicking into each other. (OK crowd, are you awake now?)
  • Very nice set with Sabin & Kazarian ends with “Back to the Future” by Kazarian, broken up by Swinger.
  • Swinger & Sabin argue over who gets to pin Kazarian. They finally team up to double-team Kazarian, driving him toward a corner. Kazarian ducks, & Jerry Lynn hits the oncoming Swinger & Sabin with a cross body from the top turnbuckle.
  • Shortly thereafter, Johnny Swinger has Jerry Lynn in a figure 4 at centre ring. Kazarian & Sabin both climb opposite turnbuckles. At the same time, Sabin 5-star splashes Jerry Lynn, & Kazarian leg drops onto Johnny Swinger; as each recovers, he covers his respective guy. “What would happen if its a double pin?”.
  • Moments later, Jerry Lynn hits a beautiful mid-ring Hurricarana, followed by a backbreaker on Chris Sabin. Kazarian breaks up the pin attempt & brawls with Lynn. Sabin gets back into it, is bear-hugged by Lynn, as Kazarian from second rope dives over flipping both Lynn & Sabin. Borash tells me this was a “sunset german bridge double pin attempt”, broken up by Kazarian.
  • Their idea of a rest hold, a 4-way submission tableau: Swinger gets Sabin in an Indian Death Lock; Jerry Lynn gets Swinger in a Dragon Sleeper; Kazarian jumps in for an inverted neck something (I’m not sure what Borash is calling that?? Its like a headlock from the front, bending the opponent over backwards.) on Lynn; & this is all at the same time. Finally Sabin sneaks out of the bottom, then Kazarian breaks the whole thing up by dropping Lynn, which dumps everybody else.
  • Kazarian sees Swinger outside, so flies over the top rope (“Superman”) to take him out. Sabin & Lynn continue in ring. Sabin throws Lynn into the corner, Lynn comes out, bounces off another turnbuckle, we assume that he’s going back out toward Sabin, but instead he summersault flips (“Springboard summersault plancha”, per Borash) over the corner to take out Kazarian & Swinger who are just rallying outside. Ref counts, the 3 guys outside are getting up, so Sabin hits a high “Leap of Faith” taking out all 3 of them. “The carnage speaks for itself on the floor.” “Holy shit, Holy shit.”
  • Sabin tosses Kazarian with a monkey flip from one corner. Kazarian lands on his feet just in time to double clothesline Lynn & Swinger. Kazarian starts to go up (as for an SSP), Sabin runs across & up the turnbuckle behind him, & hits a “German release suplex from the top rope” on Kazarian, flinging him somewhat beyond centre ring. Crowd had barely finished their previous “Holy shit” chant.
  • Everybody hits his respective finisher (apparently) on somebody else, including several beautiful DDTs & a coupe of pretty freaky-looking piledriver things.

That’s just a few of the big spots, in addition to lots of really nice one-on-one work, by everybody with everybody else. Gilberti on commentary was a riot, continuously putting over Chris Sabin (since they’re teammates in NWA:TNA.) This one match alone was pretty close to worth the price of admission. Totally amazing.

(Cfgb reported on the Frankie Kazarian vs Chris Sabin NWA:TNA match from 6/25/03, & gave it ***1/2. That was supposed to be Kazarian’s first singles match in TNA, having been impressive in 6-man tags. As good as that match was, this 4-way was tons better.)

Sabin defeats Kazarian with “Future Shock” (“a version of a fisherman’s cradle”), winning WWA cruiser title, & retaining NWA X Division title. (15:07)

Shane Douglas does a 10 minute promo, ripping on Vince McMahon & generating local heel heat. Ostensibly, he was supposed to have a match with Sabu, but he’s hurt his arm & isn’t allowed to wrestle. Joe E. Legend offers to take his spot.

    5) Joe E. Legend vs. Sabu :
Shane Douglas joins the commentators (& is pretty damn funny with Gilberti). Top rope leg drop by Sabu puts Legend through table. Many assorted chair shots.
This is a perfectly fine match, if one can somehow separate it from the incredible 4-way match. At first watching, I was lukewarm about it; however, I’m rewatching & typing, took a break after the 4-way, & this match isn’t bad when not in the shadow of the 4-way.
Top rope facebuster (with chair) by Sabu for the win. (17:34)

Douglas runs in for heel beatdown of Sabu, including using the cast on his ostensibly broken arm. Legend rallies & joins him.

Bret Hart comes out to the ring to speak on various topics.
Bret walks out OK, & delivers his address from a stool at centre ring. Huge crowd reaction. “This is the first time I’ve really come out in public [since the stroke] to talk to anybody.” Mentions that he’s retired. Mentions that the day before was the 4 year anniversary of Owen’s death. Names the several people who have died recently. Acknowledges the emails & cards from around the world that he recieved in hospital.
Transcripts are available variously online (assuming you have better popup & download tolerance than I do), eg. http://www.impactwrestling.com/content.asp?recon=4065 or check google.com (5:00)

Interview with Jeff Jarrett re match with Sting.

    6) Jeff Jarrett (NWA World Heavyweight Champion) (h) vs. Sting (WWA World Heavyweight Champion) (f) : Unification Bout
Jarrett with guitar en garde with Sting with baseball bat. Apparently since Jarrett tried to cheat (with the guitar) first, that allows Sting to beat Jarrett with the bat. Second Stinger Splash traps the ref, knocking him out. Scorpion Death Drop (reverse DDT) by Sting goes uncounted. Joe E. Legend (with a fresh guitar), then Rick Steiner run in to interfere. In a shocking swerve, Steiner double-crosses Sting & bashes him with the replacement guitar. Steiner rallies the ref.
Although the crowd is really into Sting, I thought it was pretty plodding & not really particularly good, with lots of rest time between every single spot.
Jarrett covers the fallen Sting for 3 count, winning both titles. (10:23)

Sounds like Bret Hart is in good health again. That's good news to hear.

Hart has said he'd wished his promo was clipped from the US PPV version because he didn't want people to see he couldn't remain standing. (I didn't mind seeing it, but he DID kinda ramble.)

I thought the PPV matches were, for the most part, buh-rutal and the 4-way didn't salvage the card for me. No offense to emma in particular, but a lot of the people I saw elsewhere pimping the X match as a MOTY candidate must have REALLY had their standards lowered by some of the other awful awful awful stuff they'd seen that night...or earlier in the week on RAW, maybe. The four-way dropkick spot was a total INDY RESPECT! moment and unlike the Kiwis I don't just buy displays like that any more. (Ooh, I'm JADED ;-) )

I haven't actually seen Bret since WCW I believe. I keep hearing (or maybe maybe I'm reading to much into the reports) that he is pretty feeble. I imagine he's far from ring shape but is he around the same weight? I can't decide whether to picture him thinner or heavy in the face, but I imagine he looks aged quite a bit.

He's lost weight but doesn't look that bad but I'm sure if you saw him doing anything other then sitting and talking, he'd look pretty feeble physically.

He does seem a lot better then a few years ago after he retired. He was slurring his speech then from the post-concussion syndrome. So some of it is still that and some of it is the stroke but each time I see or hear him on something, he's making good progress.

    Smarky smark smark smark. :-)

None taken. (Yet. :-) ) I haven't seen any discussion of the event at all, actually. (I suppose the Googlebots aren't keeping up?) There was definitely some pretty awful stuff on that card -- no doubt about that. Perhaps the midget extravaganza & the Storm/Konnan mess put you off your feed for the X match?

But focusing on just that specific match, what didn't work for you? (I don't get "what's not to like?".) You hated the 4-way dropkick at the end of the overture segment, 45 seconds into the match -- somewhat cheesy, but a cute way to get a full break to let the crowd into the match. OK, I get that. What about the other 14 minutes? Too many cool high spots? Too crisp & cleanly executed? Needs more Kane? Not enough kicking & punching? Help me here -- I'm not getting what you didn't like.

Hey I went to that show! That four way rocked the house seriously. I don't know about MOTY but it was damn good nonetheless.

Bret walked to the ring quite slowly but he was ok. Shane Douglas fucked up his promo bigtime, confusing us all by referring to the America's Cup as the World Cup.

To be honest, I don't have sufficient memory of the match to provide any specifics - it WAS almost six weeks ago. I would watch it again to see if I just wasn't paying proper attention, but I loaned it out to Boston Idol and who knows if HE'S even gotten to it yet. (Given the rest of the card, he may be avoiding it. ;-) )

I went to the open house on Thursday (I know someone who knows someone). Awesome to tour around the house - the kids and grandkids all wrote their names on various bricks around the house and they've stayed.
