Don't get me wrong. I despise Hulk Hogan with a passion.

But, I'm gonna be perfectly honest - that was one of the most surreal moments in the history of the WWF. Seeing Hulk Hogan (the old school legend) and the Rock (the new school legend) in the same ring was a complete markout moment. Granted the stuff with the ambulance and the off-beat shenanigans (© Lance Storm) were a bit much... but DAMN - that was just an awesome sight.

You know something... I think Rock's WM losing streak is finally gonna end this year. And, best of all, it'll be HULK HOGAN of all people putting him over.

This match alone bought WM18 for me. ;)

I totally agree. This was one of those things that looked like crap on paper, but when I saw it, I was loving it. I was even looking forward to the match! The run-in was awesome, the ambulance part was over the top, but it let's Rock go re-shoot more of that movie (god that movie must suck). But it let the crowd know the NWO means business and they are badasses. I wouldn't worry about the cheers, anytime anything like that happens, you have to expect a cheer, especially when it has been so long since something like that has happened. To top it all off, at WM18, Bret Hart needs to come down and cost Hogan the match.

This shit isn't surreal. But it does sure really sucks. Don't worry I won't just leave the sucks remark hanging like most do. I'll tell ya why.

Why indeed! Nostalgia is nice and cute and dandy but when you have the most insane line up in the history of wrestling and in my opinion the greatest booker (read Heyman) how do you explain this shit?

Austin holding a strike in the ring. NWO playing bumper cars complete with shitty edits cause Hogan couldn't drive a golf cart much less a semi. Dragging people off in handcuffs? The sexual inuendo return of doom with Godfather, Venis and Goldust. Add Billy and Chuck and Mark Henry and Mae Youngs kid being the father of Steph's kid ain't far behind.

With everything that Vince has at his disposal is he an egomainiac or a moron. Is it too much to expect that this shit actually moves FORWARD instead of back?

So...

You don't believe that a match featuring an eight-time World Heavyweight Champion (The Rock; six WWF, two WCW) and a 12-time World Heavyweight Champion (Hogan; five WWF, seven WCW) wouldn't put butts in the seats?

I shouldn't have to do a sell job here. The Rock is the most popular wrestler in the World Wrestling Federation today. He's main-evented at the last three WrestleManias, he's more over than anyone, and even though he's hardly a technical wrestler, he has gotten noticeably much better than he used to be.

Hollywood Hogan is an all-time icon. He and “Rock and Wrestling” turned the WWF into a household name to begin with. He appeared at each of the first nine WrestleManias, main-eventing eight times. As much as it pains me to admit it, it's quite likely that without Hogan, wrestling would be much less popular than it is today.

You can make the argument that Hogan is past his prime. I don't think anyone will refute that. You can make the argument that The Rock is still a young man and still getting better. Again, no argument from me. But what no one can deny is that it was once inconceivable that The Rock and Hollywood Hogan would ever be in the same federation together at the same time, much less helping co-main-event a WrestleMania together. And what even the most shameless WWF mark cannot deny is that the nWo is still over big-time, as evidenced by all the signs in the arenas and all the fans chanting and cheering for Rock to get his ass whooped. Can you remember the last time people chanted against Rocky and for his opponent? Can you remember the last time such a large portion of the audience enjoyed seeing The Rock get his ass handed to him? That's a clear indication of how intense the rivalry leading up to this matchup is going to be-- and indeed, it already is quite intense.

Perhaps the match itself will suck. But I know The Rock will turn it up, and hopefully he'll boost Hogan up in the process. For now, let's sit back and enjoy the ride instead of bitching about how much this angle sucks less than 48 hours into the bloody thing.

Futhermore. Did you see the sexual innuendo of doom tonight? Venis wasn't there tonight. Godfather spent most of the time bitching at his escorts. Goldust has been toned down since his return. Billy and Chuck weren't there. Henry and Young weren't there, praise the Lord for that. Did you watch the same program that everyone else did?

If all you're going to do is bitch about both the WWF and the past WCW, perhaps you shouldn't be watching wrestling in the first place. You just don't seem like you enjoy it very much.

My goodness! It's time to re-educate, ladies and gentlemen! Paul Heyman, greatest booker? EH EH. ECW's greatest days were under Tod Gordon. It's greatest angles were the responsibility of Raven. Heyman is a lot more hype than skill, my friend. No Way Out had his fat, greasy fingerprints all over it. You like 4 run-ins in the top 4 matches of YOUR PPVs? w00t.

As for Hogan vs. Rock, it's not going to be a technical barnburner. But it keeps both of them away from titles. And that isn't a bad thing, it's a very, VERY good thing.

I have been nothing but positive in this recent trend of Taker bashing, WWF has lost it's edge, we want more crusierwieghts- smart crapfest because I believed there was no way they could screw it up with the talent they had.

If the best they can do is NWO part 2-starring Drunk, Lazy and Orange then I'll take you up on that gracious offer to not watch and leave you more room for your 500 posts per week ratio.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with the rest of what you said. It just seemed to me like you put that first line in there cause you were ashamed to say something positive about Hogan. Having said that I admit that I may have been a wee bit too sarcastic in my reaction.

WTF? 500 posts per week? Including this one I have 68 total since Weinerville was opened, and I was even less active at ezboard.

But as for my reaction to your reaction... Vince is giving us the mark's wet dream! Rock vs. Hogan... What more could a casual fan ask for?

I have a problem with this whole NWO thing. I honestly don't care about them. I can't say I didn't enjoy some of the segment, as The Rock continues to be far more awesome than nearly everyone gives him credit for.

I started watching the WWF in 1998 or so, and WCW in late 1999 (at some point where Benoit fought Malenko and it was interesting to watch so I stayed until the bitter end). I wasn't there in 96 for the first NWO thing. I wasn't there when Hogan and Nash and Hall were in the WWF. I'll admit in my earlier days on the Internet I bought into this whole "Oh Fuck. It's Nash. What a lazy piece of shit," but I was just copying what I had heard from people I liked reading. Same thing as when I was so stoked for ECW on TNN, even though now I can't remember a single thing other than the Awesome-Tanaka stuff and Yoshihiro Tajiri. I moved on and started having enough viewing under my belt to where I could actually have a reasoned opinion of my own (not to say any of you are like mindless sheep or anything. That's the counter of some guy who has no better argument). But I never really understood why this is such a thing. All I'm really seeing are a couple of 40 year olds and a 50 year old guy. They mean nothing to me. I got nothing against 50 year old guys taking up prime spots in a company per se. Hell, El Satanico is somewhere up in there and I could watch him all damned day what with his badass smoking jacket and his evil powers and his general kickassity.

But one might counter, "But it's Hogan versus the Rock! Think of all the business it'll do!" I suppose. To be honest, outside of Frank Jewett's spectacularly written Ratings Love thing of recent (Other Arena! Go Now!), I don't care about whether the WWF is doing good or bad. If the WWF collapses, eh. Some other guy will try the same thing. He might go bankrupt, he might not, but I'll see Kurt Angle doing something. Hogan and the Rock can sell out the fucking moon for all I care. If I don't like the match, I won't care. If I do like the match, then they could be doing it in front of a half-empty lot of bikers in Sturgis and it wouldn't make a difference.

I suppose I'm just burned out on the whole trend recently of the WWF trying to push the assets of WCW just on their own, just going out there and saying, "Look! WCW! is in the WWF! My God I never thought I'd see the day! Look! ECW is back! Look! The WWF and WCW titles have merged! We have an undisputed champion (although you shouldn't tell that to Keiji Mutoh or that blobby Yasuda guy who stole Nagata's damned belt) for the first time in a long ass time!" They can keep saying how historically significant something is, but when they keep on tossing out the superlatives about how the very Earth stands still on its axis because Chris Jericho has two large belts, it all starts to sound kind of silly.

The only vaguely historical thing that this is giving me the vibe of is back when Russo was doing that whole Shootfights-involving-Irish-Whips thing where everything was Fake except something that was Really Real even though it was all prebooked and stuff. I wasn't so keen on that. I'm not so keen on the whole feeling of "The most logical way to get the 1999-level ratings back is to have everything be like 1999 again." I liked 2000 and 2001 more, although that's just me.

But that's the thing. If they wanna go off and chase ratings and make World History because maybe now the Scorpion King will make light of Santa With Muscles, let 'em. I'm tired of pretending like the only route to salvation is through my enlightened wisdom of sending Stephanie McMahon to hell. They can go on without me, and if Benoit or Angle or Austin or Rock or one of them decides to have a really good match, then I'll see if I can steal a copy from Shocker 02k or something, or maybe I'll be watching and I'll say that whoever wrestled is still really fucking good. The only opinion any of us can speak for is our own, and right now I'm leaning towards the opinion that I'd rather watch the Olympics or College Basketball if it's Thursday.

Gack. I sound like a lameass wannabe bitter columnist. Sorry. I'm just trying to sound out in writing why I'm not seeing what everyone else is. But I'm not seeing anything. It doesn't feel surreal or better or new or different. It just kinda seems like something they're doing to spike ratings. And it's not that interesting.

Chris-feels like after writing something this long and rambly at this time of night, I should end it with a Good Night and Good Morning...

No way the Rock is going over Hogan at Wrestlemania, the NWO is GAINING momentum, they've just started. People can say the truck scene was over the top but Stone Cold and HHH have done the same thing. Some of the WWF guys are going to have to join together to stop them like WCW tried, but actually win this time. I can't believe the reception these guys are getting. People cheered when they jumped the Rock. This could get interesting. Does anyone know if Heyman is still involved with the booking?

I know this is a dumb question, but why does everybody always feel the need to compare now to last year or the year before? "Man this show was good, but it was no 1999, dammit." Who cares? Things are never going to be like they were before. Kurt Angle is never going to be a rising rooking again, etc. Things evolve, they change, just because they aren't as good as before, doesn't mean they aren't still good. Last night was a good show, maybe it wasn't as good as some shows they put on during the "glory days" but who cares? The 2000 New York Yankees weren't as good as the 1998 New York Yankees, but they still won the championship. The simple fact is the WWF doesn't have competition. No matter how much we want them to, they are never going to have the edge they once did because they simply don't need to. They don't need to put up with attacks from various groups, lose various advertisers because they are so "over the top" because they don't have to beat WCW. The federation, as a whole, is not as good as it was 2 years ago, but it's still damn good. And the simple fact is if Rock-Hogan is a 2 star match (big if...I guess) it won't matter. Why? Because the crowd will be so damn into it that I, for one, won't notice. I, personally, thought the Rock and Undertaker had a pretty good match, for what it was, at No Way Out and I still find it hard to believe that Hogan can't do what Taker does (and I like Taker...hell, I'm starting to like Hogan). Maybe I'm slowly changing my philosophy, but it seems to me that all that matters is what we're watching now. What it was like 2 years ago doesn't matter. What goes on backstage doesn't matter (everyone hates Scott Hall, so what? They still work with him, all that matters). Also, maybe it's me, but wouldn't they sound even dumber if they didn't sell Chris Jericho holding the belts as being historical? I also don't agree with the arguement that if the WWF goes bankrupt it won't matter. You still have to have the right people running the ship and even if you don't like the product, I don't understand how you can argue that there are better people to be doing this. Where are they? WCW proved that you can't just throw talent out there. They had Chris Benoit, guess what? I didn't care. They didn't use him right. Kurt Angle may be doing something, but it may be boring, he may not be used right. The WWF, like it or not, knows what they are doing. They are still the top wrestling organization on this continent (I don't know enough about Japan, but I'm pretty sure "in the world" would be true, too). A year ago there was another wrestling orginization competing, they lost. They didn't lose by coincidence. They couldn't compete. You can argue that they ran themselves out of business (they did) but they did it for a reason. I guess it just seems to me that everyone likes to rip the WWF because it's "cool" to do right now. Some people won't admit that Hogan-Rock was awesome last night because Hogan's a "jerk" backstage. And I'm sure some people won't like it simply because it's Hulk Hogan and that just doesn't make sense to me. 3 days ago I didn't like Hulk Hogan, I thought he was old and stale, his stint in WCW was awful and frankly I would have been happy if I never saw him again. After 2 days, I'm willing to say that his presence in the WWF has been positive so far and could damn well be very effective. Live in the now, stop worrying about the past. The WWF is what it is now, it's not going to be what it was in 1998, 99, 00, or 01, it's just not going to be (and I don't agree with them trying to do 1999 all over again, it's nothing like 99). This is the WWF of 2002, take it for what it is, if you don't like it, you don't like it, if you do, you do. Nothing's perfect, not even Curt Hennig.

Well said BobHolly.

I loved the Rock-Hogan stuff. Loved it. It was even better because i stupidly didn't see the beatdown coming. I thought Rock was just going to walk out. About the fan reaction, I was marking out for the beatdown, finishers, spraypaint, and all that stuff, but the main reason was because it was so well done. I've always been a huge Rock fan. No way is the nWo over as a face for me. When Rock gets his revenge, wherever it so happens, the arena is going to go nuts (or at least i will). That segment lasted a long time, but i couldn't relax during it. I've been very optimistic about the nWo coming back since rumor first got out. The ppv stuff was ok, but last night was great.

First of all, I totally agree with the original point of the thread. The segment in itself wasn't anything brilliant, the beatdown was good and there won't be even a *** match at the end of it. But there was something surreal about it that had me lapping it up, of course not everyone has to like it.

Not everything good about wrestling has to be quantified and the best things don't have to be perfect. *swats gum* If a superbowl match has a bunch of fumbles in the first half, but there are 4 TDs in a tense, tight last quarter is it not a great, exciting match even if the play hasn't been flawless? Wrestlemania is regarded as the biggest event of them all, did it get it's reputation from producing cards full of 5-star matches, no, it's because it is the most eventful ppv on the biggest stage, with the most hype, tension and emotion. (and excellent branding and promotion of course)

Of course this NWO angle probably won't be the greatest thing ever happen to wrestling, but there are plenty of good things about it.
- Whether you think the guys are deserving or not, the feuds at the top of the card are all fresh.
- Vince wasn't giving the NWO orders - which is good, because it would have been pointless having the NWO as Vince's lackeys of the month.
- Casual fans should be interested and return. (you may say who cares? But if ratings are strong the fed are less likely to make rash decisions just to pop a high rating or buy-rate)
- The NWO feud could propel The Rock into the stratosphere of Austin 3 years ago. Rocky has had to work without a primo storyline and long-running feud well...forever. He's had intense rivlaries with HHH and Austin and a long feud with Mick which would have been good had it not involved so many singles matches and title changes at the time. But this could be his "McMahon-Austin" with the big payoff at the end. Again, I realise that not everyone will think this is a good thing.

Of course it isn't a can't miss angle, the fed have to work to set apart what makes the nwo so much more dangerous than any other stable that pops up. They can't just be a ministry of dullness with spraypaint. But the fed should smarten up and make it work.

And finally, I agree with NEO, Rock will be jobbing at mania again. (HHH is a certainty as new champ and you'd think Hall(?) would never go over Austin at mania) You'd think the most likely of the big 3 faces to job is Rocky. But unlike after the past 2 mania's, he will get his revenge big-time this time around.

I think this thread displays the whole "Too Smart for your own good" qualities. Just sitting back and enjoying the moment of Hogan and Rock in the same ring, giving the 2nd best promo of 2002 so far, Rock giving Hogan the Rock Bottom, NWO beating ass was great. It was outstanding TV. The Smarts are going to bitch and moan about "it is just a rehash of old angles", "Hogan can't wrestle, he doesn't deserve this match at WM" So f'n what. It is good TV, good heat, and I actually had FUN watching RAW last night. How long has it been since that has happened? I actually popped in my living room watching it. How long has it been since that happened?

You can have your opinion about it, that's cool. But damn, bringing up all the history and ages as the reason you don't like something totally destroys all entertainment in wrestling.

Amen, bro. I don't care what ANYONE says. THIS...

... is an awesome sight. Would've been cooler if Hogan was in the yellow and red -- but that's another story altogether.

This just may have sold Wrestlemania automatically with a good number of sheep.

And I do think the Rock may actually WIN this time. Then again, that's what I want.

So it's a wrestling show, and it's leading to a wrestling match?

The promos were fine, and enjoyable in and of themselves. Then they had to drive it into the ground so hard that I'm surprised they didn't strike oil. It's not as if good sports entertainment and good wrestling can't coexist, but if one side or the other of that equation sucks wind, there's a problem. Last night, they turned the former up to 120% and barely paid lip service to the latter.
