A while ago, I was one of the biggest fans of The Drew Carey Show. It was one of the wittiest, most clever comedies on television and also one of the most innovative. Who can forget the annual April Fools episodes and the "LIVE" episodes? Carey looked to be on easy street with two hit shows that were doing very well in the ratings.

That...was a while ago. Mr. Carey has hit some hard times. Whose Line Is It Anyway has been cancelled and will not return for the fall. And apparently, ditto for The Drew Carey Show. In fact, the 200th episode passed without as much as a peep from ABC. ABC will roll the summer episodes and let it silently drift into the sunset without any fanfare whatsoever.

In a way, this is kinda tragic. What a fall from grace this must be. For a show that was once one of the best out there to just die this slow death is awful. But I also get quite a few questions from this.

Just how did this happen? What made fans just LEAVE in droves? And...can anybody see a similarity between Drew Carey's fall and the current slide WWE is in?

And Drew Carey was in the Royal Rumble that one year, so I clearly blame HHH.

Seriously, the reason that Carey's show failed was because it simply got too goofy for its own good. The first few seasons were, as you said, pretty clever and original, but they got away from the original concept (average joes at a department store) in favour of more and more gimmick episodes.

As far as Whose Line goes, that cancellation I simply do not understand. At first I thought that the American version suffered from too much focus on Carey (as opposed to the much more performer-centric British original), but as time went on, the skits became the focus and Carey wisely just made the odd snide remark. WLiiA was hilarious just about every single episode, didn't need writers, and was simple and pretty cheap to produce. Once again, however, ABC screwed with the concept too much. The network wanted more and more 'special guest stars,' only a couple of whom were actually funny and/or good at improv comedy (i.e. Robin Williams), in an effort to improve the Q rating, since of the WLiiA regulars, only Wayne Brady could be called a traditionally marketable face.

Drew Carey's "failure" might be tough for him to take, but look at it this way: he's set for life, had a much better run than most stand-ups who get their own shows, and (in interviews) still seemed like a pretty decent guy. The fact that he fought so hard to bring WLiiA to the USA just because he was such a fan of the show is a sign of Carey's good character.

Over 1650 posts and still never a Wiener of the Day! But I'm not bitter!

Q: If you could have one superpower -- the strength of 100 men, invisibility, or the ability to fly -- which would you choose and why?

Michael Vick: Oh man, invisibility. If I was in a bad situation or something or I said something or you know, caught with two girls I could just disappear. I could be gone just like that -- no trouble.

I totally agree with everything you say. The last 2 years of episodes were strange, taking Mr. Wick off as the store manager to me was a huge mistake (he was Carey's nemesis, and every good comedic lead needs some form of nemesis to put obstacles in his/her life ( i.e. Homer Simpson and Flanders/Patty & Selma/Mr. Burns/issue on show, Al Bundy and Peg Bundy/Marcy Darcy,South Park kids/whatever the issue is on the show ), this makes good TV. Furthermore, Wanda Sykes did not fit into that show at all in my opinion AT ALL.

I think this is what makes good wrestling too, a good story and having some sort of nemesis/issue to conquer. As it has been stated with poochie a million times is that he has beaten everyone into the ground, thus not making for good tv b/c he has no real nemesis.

Life is about achieving things despite the obstacles put in front of you and when you see a guy like RVD and Booker T with all those obstacles thrown in front of them and keep standing up and trying no matter how insurmountable the odds may seem and never getting the big payoff, people get pissed and walk off.

If I am not mistaken, it got a 2 year renewal before this past season, so it will be back next year, more likely as a mid-season replacement. From what I have read, they are going to try and go back to more of what made it successful earlier in the show, but that will be hard with all the cast and story chanes tht have happened the past couple years.

I may never, EVER, forgive my network for this debacle of a decision. F you, Mickey Mouse. (And if ABC Family gets rid of the reruns, there's gonna be Hell to pay, bah gawd!)

Maybe the Drew Carey show was just on too long and it got old and stale. Even Christa Miller left the show. Don't feel too bad for drew, I mean still wasn't the show on for like 8-9 years? he'll still get a lot of scratch from reruns since the show is already in syndication.

Believe it or not, Whose Line is it Anyway actually DID indeed have writers for the show. Yes I know writers for an improv show, quite strange isn't it? The reason I know this is because a deal was made for them before the SAG a WGA strikes both died before they even happened so the "writers" for shows like Who Wants to be a millionaire and Whose Line Is It Anyway could continue to work.

Very few shows have anything left when they reach the 200 show level. Look at the last few years of All in the Family/Archie Bunkers Place, MASH, Married With Children, Andy Griffith Show/Mayberry RFD, and the Beverly Hillbillies. After a certain point, its tough to find anything new and interesting. The one exception to this rule is probably Cheers, and even they had a spotty last season.
This pattern should actually be a concern for the WWF/E, as they have shifted their focus from being a 'sports type' show to a 'dramedy', which means they are in the type of category where the show is dependant on the writing rather than the athleticism, and thus falls in the category of 'All Television Shows Are Made to Be Cancelled.'

If Vince would just hire Dick Dastardly and Muttly and tell them to Catch the Pigeon, it would draw at least an 8 rating.

Remember when Chyna was on "Whose line..."? That was abit odd.

That sucks that WLiiA is being cancelled. I only really started getting into the show in the past year and a half. Now where will I get my fix for "scenes from a hat" and "three headed Broadway star"?

As for the Drew Carey show, i've stuck to just checking out the syndicated episodes when I can. Again, I didn't really start watching the show up until a couple years ago so there's alot of early episodes I haven't seen yet.

The show has had it's run and I can imagine how hard it must be to think of fresh new stuff after all these changes in the show.

Well, I love the Drew Carey show, and Christa Miller is my future bride. (all i have to do is find her, and make her fall in love/or kidnap her, drug her and take her to Vegas to that really cool drive through chappel)
The one problem I found is that they were always moving the show, I didnt even realise it was still on since it kept getting moved all the time.

As far as WLiiA I could care less. Wayne Brady irritates the hell out of me. Give me the Colins and Ryans Proops and I am happy.

Drew Carey's gonna have a nice long run in Syndie-Land. Just look at the lineup for WCTX... Home Improvement, Spin City, 3rd Rock, and Carey. This show ain't fading into Bolivia... it just *works* syndicated. I couldn't get into it during its original run, and I know I'm not the only one. This and Sports Night make the current crop of ABC sitcoms so baffling... they had quality shows, and now the ones they've got on the air just suck so hard. And I don't even know who watches them, aside from my parents. I mean, they're all just not funny. John Ritter and Katey Sagal have anti-chemistry. I didn't think it possible, but it's true. Hell, the people at my ABC affiliate didn't even know this was George Lopez's second season. I just don't get it.

As for Whose Line... Comedy Central needs to make with the reruns NOW. It's enough that they've canned Battlebots and Beat the Geeks, let Upright Citizens Brigade wither and die, shunted Kids in the Hall to the 3 AM timeslot... what the hell is going on?! (Although I do thank them for Insomniac. )
