Tampa Bay signed Oakland head coach Jon Gruden to a 5 year contract today. No word yet on what compensation the Raiders will get.

The Raiders will probably get a few draft picks. ESPNews was discussing the possibility of sending Warren Sapp to Oakland, but it shouldn't/better not happen.

Mortensen Reported last week it would be SAPP and a 2nd round draft pick traded for Jon.

Wow. I thought the Gruden possibility was over?

Now who do the Raiders hire?

How much credibility has Mariucci lost in SF? Hopefully lots since the Hawks are in their division now.

From ESPN.com

"As compensation for Gruden, the Raiders will receive first- and second-round draft picks in 2002, a first-round pick in 2003, and a second-round pick in 2004, the source told Paolantonio. Oakland will not receive any cash or any players."

probably not much since he actually turned down the bucs job. it will be interesting to see what happens seeing as the 49ers were willing to let him go and they still have owens. just my opinion, but if mariucci left, i think they would have gotten dennis green to be coach and not have missed a bit AND kept owens happy.

The Bucs gave up way too much for Gruden. He only had one year left on his Oakland contract, but they give up there top two picks next year, and 4 of their top 6 over the next three years.

I dont think so, a cap savvy team like the Bucs can absorb the loss of draft picks if they grab the right free agents and can find talent in the lower rounds. In reality good teams can be built in the lower rounds of the draft.

That's true. In basketball (the only other sport where the draft gets significant coverage or is really important), lower rounds are not likely to become stars, but plenty of football players were late round steals. Hopefully, the Bucs wound be in any rebuilding stage for a few years at least, but the loss of GM Rich McKay might come back to haunt them in a couple of years.

i thought there are only 2 rounds in the nba draft...there used to be more rounds, but the nba did away with that awhile ago.

i also think the draft picks won't hurt the bucs because they have a relatively younger nucleus of good players. i see the raiders as the team in serious trouble. their best players are really old (except woodson) and are really going to have start rebuilding in a hurry. getting this many draft picks was a very smart move, but i guess we'll have to wait and see who their next head coach is to really start speculating.

cnnsi.com reports that the bucs also gave $8milliom over three years. Freakin' shit. That's a LOT to give up for a coach. While you're at Glazers', give Big Al the stadium as well! And the cheerleaders, the guy in charge of the turf, PA guy and whatever else you can think of.

I'm glad they are no longer in my Packers diversion.

I'm wondering what's Oakland players are thinking (and fans with those Chucky dolls!!!!!). Will Rich Gannon and Jerry Rice want to play with whomever Al Davis brings in? Maybe he should promote the off. coordinator.

Davis should have demanded Tampa throw in the pirate ship as part of the compensation. That would have been cool.

Well as a Raiders fan (sorry I don’t have a Chucky doll) I like the trade for a number of reasons.
1) I don’t think Gruden was coming back after next year, as much as I like him I say get what you can, football is a business.
2) Look at what they got that is way too much for a team to get for a coach. If the 8 mil over three years is true not only did they get draft picks but they also got the Bucks to pay for whoever coaches for the next three years.
3) The Raiders are an Old team with at most one run left in them with the current lineup. As is I wouldn’t be suprised to see Rice, Brown Gannon, Allen, Armstrong and Kennedy gone after next year. They need to start rebuilding now.

I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Raiders name Callahan (their o-coordinator) coach in order to maintain continuity in schemes for next season’s last gasp. Package a number of this years picks for an impact player (Lance Storm?) on defense. Then based on his performance next season keep Callahan around to run the rebuilding if the team performs up to expectations, or fire him and bring Green, Lewis or some other big time coach to run the rebuilding (Davis and Parcels are close).

As for next years Super Bowl
Raiders vs. Bucs
The media will go crazy over that one.

Raiders/Bucs would be a media circus were it to happen. Do they play each other next year?

I'm shocked at how much the Bucs gave up for Gruden. First and Second round picks are usually instant starters, and can often be stars. You're going to need a good coach to win football games, but not at the expense of the teams future.

Well general manager Rich McKay is interested in Atlanta's GM job, and Atlanta wants him, but the Bucs are asking for a first and second round draft pick as compensation to release him from his contract.

ESPN.com says the Bucs are trying to get him to stay, and might be deliberately stalling in negotiations so the Falcons are forced to go with someone else, leaving McKay woth no choice but to re-sign with the Buccaneers.
