I'd be willing to see them try Aebischer out, but I'm worried that stacking the lineup as they have might put undue pressure on him, like Osgood went through in Detroit.
Washington Huskies, 2003 Pac-10 football champs. Coming soon.
The rich keep getting richer, it looks to be Avalanche vs. Red Wings in the west. Who will be the surprise in the west? I could only see St. Louis or Minnesota taking down the kings of the mountain.
They signed Kariya..for...are you ready? I.5 MILLION. That is all.....
The NHLPA will have something to say about this that is for sure.
"You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named 'Bush', 'Dick', and 'Colon. Need I say more?"
He's getting less icetime for sure, playing behind Sakic, Forsberg & a lot of others. I'd say he got a good deal. Just watch for the NHLPA to go all apeshit now that a player is actually taking a PAYCUT in pro sports. Tossing away $8.5 mil is OK if you're gonna win.
Your winner and 3-time Stanley Cup Champion...the New Jersey Devils! Their title defense begins in 4 months!
While the Maple Leafs get nobody. Fuck you, Pat Quinn.

Oliva: You are the weakest link! Goodbye!
Stewie: Ahahaha. Oh God, that's funny. That's really funny. You write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye!' You know I've never heard anyone make that joke before. You're the first. I've never heard anyone reference that outside program before. Because that's what she says on the show, right? Hmmm? 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye!' And ye...ye..yet you've taken it and....and used it out of context to insult me in this everyday situation. What a clever, smart girl you must be. To come up with a joke like that all by yourself. Mmmmm...that's so fresh too. Any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity. Mmmm? Cuz i'm here God you're so funny!
Apparently Paul & Teemu decided to shop around as a package deal. SICK FFFREAKS!
Kariya took the enormous paycut because now he is under the NHL minimum and thus an UFA again next year.
Personally, I dunno. I never really liked the Avalanche. Kariya is my favorite player however..why the fuck couldn't they just sign with Anaheim together.. Anaheim with Kariya, Selanne and Jiggy would rawk..*sigh*
I guess it will be a huge change for Kariya, but he might benefit from it. No longer is he the guy all other teams target. His play should improve despite getting some less minutes.
""The source said Kariya had specific reasons for signing the relatively low contract figure, but did not elaborate."
... Actually, it's a calculated move on Kariya's part. He becomes unrestricted after this coming season, and seeing as how he's going to play side-by-side with some of the best offensive talent in the NHL -- he's looking to put up big numbers and win a championship, which in turn (he hopes) will get him paid big dollars.
The apparent problem with this strategy is the precarious state of the NHL that is expected after the expiration of the current CBA. But, if I were a Colorado fan, I wouldn't care -- this Avs team looks to be incredibly entertaining, and worth a season ticket.
Tanguay-Forsberg-Hejduk Kariya-Sakic-Selanne
That looks like an All-Star team's top 6. Just absolutely sick.
I would think Granato's toast if the Avs don't barrel out of the gate, though.

Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post write why he feels the league needs to step in here. (I disagree, but it's a pretty interesting article.) My favorite thing is where he points out that by thaking such a huge paycut, Kariya cut $10,000 of the average NHL salary by himself.

I just dont get it. People, mostly in the media will complain ad nauseum about free agent spending, about "big market" teams buying every player available, and complain that the athelete gets paid handsomely to "play a game". Yet, two guys who suffered (and lets be honest they frieking SUFFERED in Anehiem for all those seasons) decide they want to play in a Stanley Cup finals and have a great chance to actually WIN one, and they sacrifice about 15 million bucks between them, its a WRONG move?
I dont think Colorado can win it all. No drive, no goalie and they play in a tough division/conference. They have to get through, in no particular order, Detroit, St Louis, Dallas Anahiem, and Vancouver this season. All but Vancouver could be seen as legit finals contenders, but they have a big, strong team.

Feh. Kiszla's an idiot, and he doesn't know too much about hockey to begin with.
Wow, a guy in DENVER is complaining about the Avs' moves? Way to be popular.
The NHL is almost turning into the NBA in terms of the strength between the East and the West. The West has Detroit, Dallas, Colorado and Vancouver who are legit Cup contenders, not to mention Anaheim if they can keep it going and St. Louis if they get Curtis Joseph. The East has New Jersey, Ottawa and....uh...the Leafs? :(

Q: If you could have one superpower -- the strength of 100 men, invisibility, or the ability to fly -- which would you choose and why?
Michael Vick: Oh man, invisibility. If I was in a bad situation or something or I said something or you know, caught with two girls I could just disappear. I could be gone just like that -- no trouble.

I think if Osgood stays healthy, playing with McInnis, Pronger and Jackman in front of him, he can have a terrific season. I am hoping against it, since although I live in St Louis, I hate the blues, but the chances are there that he will prosper.
I have to disagree with everyone about Anaheim. Without Kariya, it will be much more difficult for them to reach the same level they did in 2002-3. Detroit will not trade Cujo to anyone in the Western Conference. Ken Holland is no dope. Rumor has it that Cujo is going to the Rangers. I am not sure about Dallas either. Losing Hatcher to the Wings is a big blow to their blue line. Vancouver can contend, but they need to improve in the net. I think Sean Burke would fit in nicely there. The Blues are always a threat. Going through so many netminders hurt them last season. If they can stay moderately healthy, the Blues have the best shot of beating the Cheating 'Dique or Detroit.
(edited by mountinman44 on 10.7.03 1818) WHAT OF DOUGHNUTS?!?!
As much as I like Kariya, I think he's extremely overrated. With the money the Ducks are saving they can afford a couple of players who can contribute far more than Kariya could.
