I usually listen to a CD or two whenever I'm out delivering pizzas, and the other night I decided to bust out the Beatles' White Album. It's one of my favourite records, and I've heard it many times in the past, but it suddenly struck me that the White Album is probably the best record of all time. Sure, it's got Revolution 9 on it, but even though it's not a song, it's at least a breathtaking bit of sound editing. Other than that (and the snippets that are 'Can We Do It In The Road' and 'Wild Honey Pie,') you've got 27 killer Beatles songs.
Anyhoo, this post is devoted to the SINGLE albums (don't do a list, please) that everyone else thinks is the best.

Q: If you could have one superpower -- the strength of 100 men, invisibility, or the ability to fly -- which would you choose and why?
Michael Vick: Oh man, invisibility. If I was in a bad situation or something or I said something or you know, caught with two girls I could just disappear. I could be gone just like that -- no trouble.

Kinda hard to compete with this, but I think I'll have to go with either Radiohead's The Bends or RHCP's Blood Sugar Sex Magik. At least out of the ones I own... that rules out lots of the greats.
Just like not many of us will agree on the 'best album ever' I cannot decide what my own favorite one is. There are so many reasons to like one album or the other.
You are right, The White Album might be one of the best ever. (And I like Why dont we do it in the road, btw)
But then there is Appetite FOr Destruction by Guns N'Roses. An album that meant a lot to me growing up. Then there is 'Ten' by Pearl Jam which blew me away and to this day remains one of the best ever. But hold! I pretty much love every PJ album to the point that they are all one and PJ is just the best band ever..
But ofcourse there is 'Siamese Dream' by the Smashing Pumpkins, which is near or at the same level of influence as Ten..aaargh! the pain, the horror!
So..barring me changing my mind within the next ten seconds I go with Pearl Jam's TEN as the best album ever..
This is a tough one, so I'd like to second "Appetite for Destruction" and say that "Back in Black", "Hysteria", "...And Justice for All", and "Metallica (the Black Album)" make it IMPOSSIBLE for me to say "best album ever."
(Even though you said no lists, you knew there HAD to be lists, right?)
Crap, I just thought of "Master of Puppets" and Led Zeppelin. So many GREAT Zeppelin albums.
Washington Huskies, 2003 Pac-10 football champs. Coming soon.
Are we talking favorite album or best album? Because those are two different things.
My favorite album is probably a toss-up between Ben Folds Five's eponymous debut, They Might Be Giants' "Factory Showroom" and "Beautiful Freak" by Eels. I wouldn't call any of these albums the best ever, though.
The best album again is a tough call. I'm extremely partial to the Beatles and, though I love the White Album, I'm leaning closer towards "Abbey Road". (And "Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper" are good choices, too.) So, it's one of those four, but I've got to commit. I've got to pick one to call the best album ever.
I've got it!
The best album ever is "Dark Side of the Moon", by Pink Floyd.
My very favorite of all time will always be The Beatle's Revolver. By far and away the best album I have ever heard.
My Top 5 5. The Chronic- Dr. Dre 4. Ten- Pearl Jam 3. Whats the Story Morning Glory- Oasis 2. Nevermind- Nirvana 1. Revolver- The Beatles
Somewhere in the top 10 would have to be Led Zepplin's IV and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.
WIENER OF THE DAY! July 6, 2002!
If I lived back in the wild west days, instead of carrying a six-gun in my holster, I'd carry a soldering iron. That way, if some smart-aleck cowboy said something like "Hey, look. He's carrying a soldering iron!" and started laughing, and everybody else started laughing, I could just say, "That's right, it's a soldering iron. The soldering iron of justice." Then everybody would get real quiet and ashamed, because they had made fun of the soldering iron of justice, and I could probably hit them up for a free drink.
You could easily argue for any one of these, though:
White Album - the Beatles Rain Dogs - Tom Waits IV - Led Zeppelin Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco Kind of Blue - Miles Davis Blue Train - John Coltrane London Calling - The Clash This Year's Model - Elvis Costello Doolittle - Pixies Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan
Yet that completely leaves out Nick Cave, Nick Lowe, Elvis Presley, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Albert King, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, David Bowie, Gary Numan, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Radiohead and any number of other artists who put out albums that changed the world.
Like I said, it really can't be done...
/tarnish...
I always play Russian roulette in my head...seventeen black or twenty-nine red... -- Tom Waits
That being said, I'm also extremely partial to U2's Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree, Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Springsteen's Born in the USA
White Album, though, is just a sick record. Double albums have the advantage in this kind of a "contest," I suppose, since the sheer volume of good songs can be hard to overcome.

I have to put a third vote in for Appetite for Destruction. Not only is it one of my favorite albums ever, but it's so damn solid from front to back. I'll say that Anything Goes isn't their strongest song, but it is made up for by the best opening song for an album ever, Welcome To The Jungle. If I had to pick two other albums, I'd have to go with Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and Nirvana's "Nevermind".

I don't know why it's in my head right now (possibly 'cause I just got it back from a friend), but "Too Far to Care" by the Old 97's just kills me. It's too much fun.
I know what you're thinking--hey, that guy stole my shoes!
Just my opinion, of course, but when it comes to picking the best album, I give Revolver by The Beatles the top spot, edging out Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (also by The Beatles) and The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. However, for me to listen to any of the above requires quite a bit of an emotional investment on my part, which is something I prefer not to do while I'm behind the wheel of a car. So when I'm out driving (be it to my local place of business or on a journey of several hundred miles) the criteria for best album changes to something fun that I can sing along with without having to think too much about. So for road trips, the best album IMHO is a toss-up between With The Beatles and The Beatles Live at the BBC.
