So now that three of the four semifinalists have been determined, where do you think they're going to go with this? Personally, I think that the last quarterfinal match will be Eddie/Tajiri, with Eddie coming out of it as the last semifinalist. Then the possibilities are Benoit/Eddie and Billy/Matt or Benoit/Matt and Billy/Eddie. It's a tough choice, but I think I'd go with the second option, and save Benoit/Eddie for the PPV.

Though, the first option, and Benoit/Matt at the PPV would be almost as good. I take it back. Matt doesn't have anything else to do if he doesn't make it to the finals, where Eddie can continue to feud with Tajiri, or re-team with Chavo, and feud with a Tajiri/Ultimo team.

What do you all think?

I'd much rather see Chris Benoit vs. Matt Hardy in the final, and actually have Hardy go over. A year ago I never would have said this, but I really think he's ready to go to the next level. Benoit's accomplished all the undercard stuff that he's going to, so his having the title would just reek of having nothing better for him to do. Plus he's got a ready-made feud with Rhyno just waiting in the wings that doesn't need the US title to be involved. Hardy, on the other hand, not only gets elevated by winning a major (hopefully) singles title but also has a prop to assist his next feud.

In the end, though, as long as it doesn't wind up on Billy Gunn, I can deal with whatever the solution actually is.

Since they'll need 8 matches for the PPV, it'll probably be Benoit/Hardy and Eddy/Gunn in the semis, with Hardy/Gunn in the finals, and the least talented/over of the four will walk out with the belt.

If Vince would just hire Dick Dastardly and Muttly and tell them to Catch the Pigeon, it would draw at least an 8 rating.

Here's what I've gathered for the US Title Tournament. For the 7th and 8th competitors in the tournament let's say eddy vs. tajiri. So it looks like Benoit vs. Matt which I think Matt Hardy will win. And Gunn will face let's say Eddy G. and win that one. So the finals seem to go along with the rumored plan of Billy Gunn vs. Matt Hardy. Yes, not very appealing, but most likely.

As long as Matt Hardy is the one who wins the belt, preferably in a non-screwy fashion, I'll be cool with how they get there.

Benoit should be well above this level - if I'm the WWF, I'm turning him heel ASAP, putting him over Brock at Summerslam, and setting the stage for Angle to ascend the mountain and take the babyface run to glory for Wrestlemania XX against him. The WWF knows that Benoit/Angle can draw huge; now let's see how smart they are and give them the prime slot.

Eddie, likewise, is above the US title. I'd much rather see Tajiri get a semifinal slot than Eddie, and I'd rather see them out of the tournament entirely and killing each other in a PPV match.

Billy Gunn, of course, is a colossal waste of time and if Vince doesn't realize that, company man or not, he's deluding himself.

Matt Hardy's already been screwed out of a push once. (The Edge/Rey Rey/Albert thing last year.) Don't screw him over a second time. You have no idea what kind of a terrible message that will send to him.

I would like to see Chris Benoit, Matt Hardy, or John Cena (I know he is out of the running right now but still) win the U.S. Title. I would like to see them win it cause you know they might have a chance of using it to push them higher up the ladder.

But lets be honest, the goal of winning the U.S. Title is to help push them to high mid card and to see if the can be ready for main event. So I don't see Tajiri winning the U.S. Title and then being pushed to the main event slots. Thats just the way WWE is.

Eddie's (quick) heel turn happened after the Billy Gunn rumor hit the net. Plans can change. If Eddie wins a tournament match then I'd bet the plan did change and he gets the belt.

The Torch is reporting plans for the US title have already changed, or could very well change, as a result of the fan reaction to Gunn/Cena. Cena had a couple chants, and Gunn was reacted to very poorly. Jeez, one match and his comeback momentum is gone...Is that the guy you put your #2 title on? Anyway, Cena looks like he's going to be feuding with Orlando and/or his white Uncle Taker, but keep an eye on this guy. They may not screw up with him. He's got a groundswell of support off a gimmick designed to draw heel heat, much like Austin did. This is one of those rare times where the fans are clearly reacting opposite to how the office wants and expects them to. Let's see if they roll with it, as they did with Austin, or if they decide to mightily impose will and force the fans to comply, as they've done with Flair, Angle, and Eddy recently.

I think that they should absolutely put the U.S. title on Matt Hardy. If Cena were in the tournament, he'd be my guy, but Hardy is the next best thing. I don't think the U.S. belt would do anything for Benoit. Benoit really needs to be traded to RAW.

The following post expresses the opinions of a raving Jerichoholic. He is biased, opinionated and bitter. You have been warned.

As much as I would LOVE to see a Benoit-Jerichop match, UI don't think trading Benoit to Raw is the right answer. I think that bringing back the stipulation that the US Champion is the #1 Contender to the WWE Title would be a pretty good idea, as it would give some meaning to the belt and get a lot of guys shots at the World Title. If Lesnar (or Angle, or whoever the champ is) can make 3 to 5 guys look pretty good against him, even if they're defeated, then SmackDown! will have several new main event level stars. Of course, it could also turn out like Triple H vs. everyone on the Raw roster.

If this is true, WWE really screwed themselves by wasting Cena in the tournament. Right now I'd have to pick Eddy (should the probable Eddy/Tajiri match take place) as my guy to win the tourney. Over the past few weeks Matt Hardy has really lost momentum with his character with the lack of tv time, matches, and the firing of Crash. A couple months ago he would've been the guy. I've always loved Eddy as a heel and I think the strap would fit nicely with him. Plus he brings instant cred to the title as well.

For a wishful thinking scenario - I'd like to see Cena go over Taker at Vengeance, beatdown Gunn in the back, and steal his spot in the tourney and use that momentum to win the belt. But, that'll never happen. If reports are true that Cena is a guy Taker would be willing to put over, I doubt he'd do the job the first match of the feud.

Another failed Billy Gunn singles push? I'm shocked. At least it fizzled out before Vengeance.

I don't think Chavo is due back until the Fall because I remember reading the injury would put him out at least six months so an Eddy singles run would be good.

I'd do Benoit/Matt and Eddy/Gunn with Benoit/Eddy in the Finals and whoever goes over there, it's all good. Heck any of those three (Benoit, Matt, Eddy) would make a good initial champion.

I wouldn't put the US Title on Cena, he doesn't really need a title right now. He just needs to be treated like a top guy by The Undertaker in their feud, not like Taker treated him a few months ago.

Indeed.

Eddie or Benoit would bring credibility to a belt that was never treated all that well once the real WCW folded. Matt could do it but I'm not a big fan of "trading belts," if you wheel. (A la Jericho losing the cruiser weight title and winning the TV title almost immediately afterward.)

Billy Gunn... man, fuck Billy Gunn.

Who would have guessed!? Oh yeah anybody who's actually seen the other half dozen Billy Gunn pushes that failed. Cena would have awesome in this, oh well. I think Matt Hardy is most likely taking it but I wouldn't be shocked if they forced Billy Gunn with it no matter what. Remember he's "The One" too bad as a wrestler he reminds me of a #2 LoL.

I'm surprised I haven't heard Sean O'Hare's name bandied around at all in regards to the US title. Not saying that he should have the belt, but he seems like a plausible entrant. Oh well, at least The Cat believes.

Nah, the Cat's mama just has good taste. I'd assumed that they had a different plan for Sean, up til Roddy's untimely departure. If they're truly considering a replan, using Sean could be a useful thing. It'd make me & Cat's mama happy women.

Actually I bandied sean o'haire in an earlier thread as a possible candidate for the US title: http://wienerboard.com/thread.php/id=12935

We don't know the last quarterfinal entrants yet so one of them could still be O'Haire.

If Taker puts over Cena and thats a hell of an IF. It will be better for Cena than winning the US title. So far, the US title scene has been so random that in the end it doesn't matter who wins it. For the secondary title you would think they would put some energy into it. No brackets and no real buzz about it. Tazz and Cole have sold it more than anyone and they should be given major props for it.

When Billy wins, yes he will win, because there is no hope. Unless God talks him out of it. He wil have it for a month drop it and hopefully Cena, Hardy or Eddie will be given a run with it for a few months. Either choice is valid since it leads to instant fueds ie turn Cena or O'Haire face against Hardy or O'Haire/Cena or Eddie/Tajiri which I think will be at Vengance. Even Rhyno would make a good challenger for the belt once they figure out what to do with him and Benoit. Benoit doesn't need that belt, he should want the World belt and once Angle/Lesnar is over Benoit is next in line for a shot at that puppy. If anything we get really great matches for the fall. Unless Big Show and Albert start getting even bigger pushes or worse Vince.

Cena did go over Taker during the pre-Backlash #1 contenter tournament (with the help of the FBI). That's just an FYI.

I have a feeling it's back to the drawing board for the "creative" team in regards to O'Haire. With Piper's sudden departure, I'll bet these idiots have no idea how to use him anymore.

See you in six months, Sean. Wonder how you'll be repackaged?
