Since the year is almost officially half-over, did anyone see anything in 2003 that they'd nominate for an Oscar?

Finding Nemo....that's about it.

Oliva: You are the weakest link! Goodbye!

Stewie: Ahahaha. Oh God, that's funny. That's really funny. You write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye!' You know I've never heard anyone make that joke before. You're the first. I've never heard anyone reference that outside program before. Because that's what she says on the show, right? Hmmm? 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye!' And ye...ye..yet you've taken it and....and used it out of context to insult me in this everyday situation. What a clever, smart girl you must be. To come up with a joke like that all by yourself. Mmmmm...that's so fresh too. Any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity. Mmmm? Cuz i'm here God you're so funny!

identity should maybe get a screenplay nod, Finding Nemo is a shoo-in for Best Animated Feature and I have no doubt The Matrix will mop up the FX awards, but that's about it. I'd love to see my boy Colin Farrell get a nomination in some form, however-Phone Booth anyone?

There's quite a quagmire in Movie-ville this year.

This year's looking one of the most profitable years in box office history...and yet there isn't really much in terms of Oscar-quality films.

It's looking like THIS might be the year for Lord of the Rings. Third time's the charm, after all.

What is Mattitude?
Utilizing the belief system and work ethic (Mattributes) of THE Matt Hardy to create a better life for yourself by fulfilling your goals and dreams. Mattitude is a quality that can help anyone -- regardless of background or past -- to achieve success. You just have to make it a lifestyle, a mindset, a religion. Mattitude, is something that can not be taught or learned. Mattitude is something that burns within. In the ring, Mattitude is the intangible, the x-factor, that gives me an advantage over everyone else.

It's not even out yet, but I'd say Seabiscuit would have a decent chance. Based on a popular book, teen heartthrob as star, period piece, a couple of Oscar nominees and winners...the whole ad campaign seems based on stuff the Academy usually rewards.

Not sure about the middle of the year release date, though.

IDENTITY SPOILERS - BEWARE!!!

Isn't Identity the script they make fun of in Adaptation? The one that Donald is writing? I could swear that The 3 and Identity were the same...

I couldn't even tell you what I've seen this year.

The best thing I saw this year is stuff left over from last year. I guess the best thing may be Lost In La Mancha.

I got my money on the following

Phone Booth
Finding Nemo

and of course Lord of The Rings.....

"You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named 'Bush', 'Dick', and 'Colon.
Need I say more?"

Probably - but how will the Academy handle two Matrix movies? If they nominate them both individually, that could split the vote and give the award to, hmmm, probably Return Of The King.

I think they will probably nominate the second movie, since it will be the one that comes out right before the season ends. Unless, WB makes a push for movie 2 and, say, the freeway scene.

There's only one movie that deserves the honor of best picture. That movie is Cowboy Bebop. Watch, I bet it doesn't even get a best animated feature nod. I'm expecting the the political biopic "It Takes a Pancake..." to run away with best picture :)

As it stands right now, Finding Nemo is the best picture I have seen all year. It was X-Men 2 espically after I was bored with Matrix 2 and Hulk. Granted, I heard 28 Days After could be a sleeper if it does well at the box office. Right now, there is no really great film out yet. The studios are really starting to hold those out for the winter nowadays.

The end-of-the-year favourites are Cold Mountain, a Civil War movie with a superstar cast, Russell Crowe's new movie about a ship at sea, and The Last Samurai, Tom Cruise's new movie that looks like a star-pushing Oscar vehicle if there ever was one.

LotR: RotK (I love acronyms) is just about guaranteed to get a nomination, but I'd still be surprised to see it actually win. Oscar just doesn't like the fantasy movies.

I agree with oldschoolhero that Finding Nemo might as well be given the Best Animated Film award right now. It's no contest.

I'm hoping Neil LaBute gets a screenplay nod and Rachel Weisz gets a nomination for The Shape of Things which was just a fun evil movie to watch.

Clearly the films that will dominate the Oscar noms are not out yet, and won't be for months. And I agree with Big Bad that LOTR will have to settle for three nominations, no Best Picture win.

The best film I've seen so far is Bend It Like Beckham. I'm hoping that it's done well enough to have a shot at Academy recognition, although expecting the voters to remember that far back may be too much.

I haven't seen Nemo yet but hopefully I will.

Academy rules stipulate that all a film has to do is be released for one week in Los Angeles to qualify for the Oscars.

As for awards... Hulk & Matrix get nods for visual effects & sound effects work. Both were good in that respect. Nemo still stands above as one of the best shows this year. I expect Seabiscuit to be good, and the rest of the year (December especially) to have lots of goodness.

Still, at least last year we had Red Dragon and Road to Perdition to tide us over.

"America may have some problems, but it's our home. Our team. And if you don't wanna root for your team...then you should get the hell out of the stadium. Go America." --Stan Marsh, South Park

I've gotta throw my $0.02 in for Bruce Almighty...if for nothing else than the somewhat-accurate portrayal of the TV news biz, with exceptions. (Hollywood can NEVER get my business 100% right.)

That, and the plot's nearly a mirror of the life story of a reporter I used to work with. If he gets the God powers, though...we're all f*cked. :-)

I'll give you all Finding Nemo, but what about:

Dark Blue. I think Kurt Russell should get at least consideration for a Best Actor nomination. He is amazing, and the movie is damn good as well.

I will second Colin Farrell's performance in Phone Booth as worthy of a nom. He made it believable for me by the way he acted as the arrogant PR uberguy.

Molly over Trish on Heat? WWE, you're the best. And don't let anybody tell you any different.

I realize that neither of them would have any hope in hell of getting nominated, but Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell were both really great in Old School.

In fact, here's my personal Best Picture list for 2003 so far.

Finding Nemo
Bend It Like Beckham (presuming it qualifies)
Shanghai Knights
Phone Booth
A Mighty Wind, Old School (tie)
