For anyone that has Showtime, I implore you check out this cat Joe Calzaghe on Saturday. A European fighter that fights at super-middleweight (168). He doesn't get much exposure here but in my opinion, he was maybe the only guy that could probably give Roy Jones a good match. Sure RJ is out the picture now, but this guy usually puts on a good show.

Reminds me of Hamed wanna-be as far as charisma. But he doesn't have it. There was only one Prince Hamed. Anyway, the guy he's fighting (Byron Mitchell) is a power puncher who's always dangerous. No other real skills to note. Styles do make fights though. Should be an interesting bout.

I don't think he could've given Jones anything to worry about, but Calzaghe has got some pop. My initial thought on the fight was that if Mitchell couldn't beat Ottke, he wouldn't have muh of a shot against Calzaghe. However, Ottke is much more of a boxer than Calzaghe and Mitchell might have a better chance against someone like JC.

Oh great, another Prince. Just what boxing needs: another egotistical hype-job that can't fight.

Over 1500 posts and still never a Wiener of the Day!

Oliva: You are the weakest link! Goodbye!

Stewie: Ahahaha. Oh God, that's funny. That's really funny. You write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye!' You know I've never heard anyone make that joke before. You're the first. I've never heard anyone reference that outside program before. Because that's what she says on the show, right? Hmmm? 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye!' And ye...ye..yet you've taken it and....and used it out of context to insult me in this everyday situation. What a clever, smart girl you must be. To come up with a joke like that all by yourself. Mmmmm...that's so fresh too. Any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity. Mmmm? Cuz i'm here God you're so funny!

Calzaghe is a solid boxer, would loved to have seen him up against Jones, just to see how good he actually is.

Comparisson to Hamed is grossly wrong as they are worlds apart in terms of thier presented persona's.

How much exposure do you guys get of non American fighters? Im actually talking specifically British in this case as I feel we produced some of the best (Super)Middleweights, Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, Micheal Watson, Steve Collins. Do these guys names ring any bells over there?

He's not really like the Prince, it's mainly the accent and the way he tries to talk stuff that reminds me of the Prince. The comparison stops there. He has real skills and the balls to follow through in battle. Hasn't really faced any big names or big punches yet. This fight should be a good test.

Sure Hamed was not the best boxer but he had "the hot of a lon". People paid to see him, win or lose. I thought he drew people and was good for the sport. He's finished now unfortunately.

To Crip's question: Yes I know a few of them. Chris Eubank was a good fighter, Calzaghe changed things. I'm sorry but I hate Nigel Benn, because of the McClennan fight. I was hoping that Roy Jones would avenge that fight, but I don't think he did. Other one's that I know of are Ricky Hatton, has potential but not ready for Tszyu. Eamonn McGee is pretty crafty but kinda boring. I haven't seen Audley Harrison yet, but I hear things.

Yeah, I must admit I liked Hamed as well, simply because he was a character that stood out and for along time looked like he would live up to the hype, very powerful puncher.

I have to say Nigel Benn is my personal favourite, I remember the fight with McClennan and it looked like it would be over within the first three rounds as McClennan was all over Benn. Benn showed great courage and tenacity to ultimately win the match. But it was a tragic end to what I personally consider the best match I've watched in my time.

Steve Collins was the guy that retired both Eubank and Benn and wanted the Jones fight a few years ago but it never happened.

Hatton looks decent, I have reservations about Harrision, not seen anything that impresses me yet.

Watson was another very highly rated boxer, beat Benn but lost to Eubank, first time controversially, most people who watched it, including me felt he had done more than enough for the win, but the judges felt otherwise. The rematch saw Watson him collapse in the 12th round of a closely fought match and fall into a coma.

Going slightly off topic here but you can read more about Watson here, an inspiring story;

It seems like Showtime's fighter stable has a definite Euro slant, with Hatton, Clazaghe, Tszyu, et al. I remember watching Micky Ward fight Shea Neary in England on Showtime as well. They also seem to love US Olympic team boxers, like Jeff Lacy, but then they get really good and jump to HBO, like Jermain Taylor.

Fernando Vargas is fighting Saturday on HBO. Does anyone know if Fitz Vanderpool is any good?

A Canadian dude, if I remember correctly, he fought Bernard Hopkins on HBO before. He started out strong but Hopkins used he normal cheap tactics and won. I thought his name was Syd Vanderpool though, so it may not be the same guy. If it's the same guy, he's an offensive fighter and would be a good test for Vargas on his comeback run.

Well, that certainly was a bullshit stoppage. Mitchell was hurt but he sure looked like he was giving some back. Too bad, because it looked as though they were going for a Gatti-Ward type of fight.

(Plus, I messed up before about the Vargas fight...it's the last Saturday in JULY, not JUNE. My bad.)

Damn shame. The bad thing is I KNEW that was gonna happen. To put it in a nice way, I can't remember the last time an American boxer won a title in Europe.

I blame Mitchell really, that's like the 2nd or 3rd time he fought and got screwed over seas. He should have been more careful. Calzaghe should give a rematch but I doubt he will. Mitchell is just too strong.

Though Mitchell was quoted as saying he felt the fight stopped prematurely, he didn't put up too much protest. Additionaly, he was quoted as saying he had never been hit so hard and fast before.

All credit to Calzaghe.
