Have any of you ever called that during the older PPV's? I was just watching Wrestlemania 13, and of all people they have Brian Pillman and Sunny manning the Superstar line.

What type of "interviews" could we hear back then? Uncensored stuff?

I called the WWF hotline once (yes, I'm man enough to admit it) back in 1995. They had a Sid Vicious interview (right after he turned on Shawn Michaels), and it was TOTALLY kayfabe. Of course, it was 1995, and they didn't a whole lot of 'out of character' stuff back then.

I'm guessing that during the PPV's, they had kayfabe interviews with wrestlers. So after The Sultan lost his match, I'm sure they'd just have an interview with him saying "I'll get you ROCKY MAIVIA!!!" or some stupid shit like that.

I called that thing five times during Wrestlemania IV. I had to know how the tournament was going. It was just one of the announcers recapping the last match.

I did the same thing for NWA's Chi-Town Rumble, except that time I waited for the show to end first. Again, it was just a run down of the results. Steiner beat Mike Rotunda! Steamboat got the big belt!

Actually, Steiner lost the TV Title back to Rotundo/a at Chi-Town Rumble. It was also the night Scott Steiner debuted in the NWA/WCW.

Before the internet, this was the best way to get PPV results the night of the event (excluding of course, scramblevision).
I remember calling the Superstar line to find out who won. Even if it was 99 cents a minute, it was still cheaper than paying $25-30 for the PPV.
It wasn't like you could find out the next night on Raw because there was no Raw. You had to wait till Saturday mornings "Superstars" show or hook-up with a friend at school who saw it who may or may not be BSing you.
"Hogan lost? Really?"
"Oh yeah man it was brutal"
Thank god for the internet.

My favorite was the WCW 900 line, and all the hype Okerlund used to give it:

"Folks, rumor has it that a former champion from the World Wrestling Federation is fed up, and on his way to WCW. Who is it? I can't talk about it on television(*cough*andalsoitsnottrue*cough*) but CALL ME ON THE HOTLINE, 1-900-909-9900."

As a little mark, I called once to reinstate Macho Man Randy Savage. I called PWI's line a few times without parents permission, got my ass beat when the phone bill came.

Prime Time Wrestling on Monday nights (Raw's predecessor) always showed the results of the PPV with accompanied photos courtesy of WWF Magazine. They wouldn't show video of the results until Saturday morning.

WIENER OF THE DAY! July 6, 2002!

Fear can sometimes be a useful emotion. For instance, let's say you're an astronaut on the moon and you fear that your partner has been turned into Dracula. The next time he goes out for the moon pieces, wham!, you just slam the door behind him and blast off. He might call you on the radio and say he's not Dracula, but you just say, "Think again, bat man."

Mean Gene is worhtless.

I want nothing more than to see that scumbag fired and forced to do QVC specials until he kicks the bucket and can finally get that 1 inch layer of makeup off his face.

"America may have some problems, but it's our home. Our team. And if you don't wanna root for your team...then you should get the hell out of the stadium. Go America." --Stan Marsh, South Park

I dunno what's up with you guys. I must rate higher, because WWE superstars are calling me. It's true, it's true! :-)

Last year, WWE and DirecTV basically did a mass phoning to customers who ordered WWE PPV's in the past, pleading with them...err, pitching WrestleMania XIX. It's a recording of Hogan, promo-ing his match w/ McMahon, with the announcer schpiel in the middle.

I've got voice mail now, but I keep my answering machine around just to hear it for kicks. Sad, I know...

Yes, Mene Gene is just about the biggest liar in a business full of them. But, he is definitley not worthless. He is, without a doubt, the GREATEST hype-man in pro wrestling. They could make Big Show v. Nathan Jones the main-event of WrestleMania XX, and I think that Mene Gene could get me excited about it. There will never be another Gene Okerlund. EVER!

Totally agree with you Omega (well, not about Jones-Show main-eventing anything; that gives me nightmares actually). Okerlund is a great pitchman and he does give the WWE a little extra class whenever he's on screen. I'm surprised they don't use him for PPVs, etc. because he says he's willing to, and he would do much better than the other backstage nerds.
