They don't seem much different to Lenny and Lodi and Too Much to me. I would think WWF should leave this alone b/c very gimmicky tag teams really don't work nor do "gay gimmick" tag teams.

But do you think that the average person who watches wrestling (whatever the heck that is) could and would get behind a "gay" face? Sure, I'd like to believe that people would be that openminded, but do you think it's reasonable and realistic to think that they would? I'm not saying that I agree with the idea of a "gay" wrestler only being a heel, I think a gay face would be great even from the novelty standpoint, but just think about what that means if that's the only way people will accept them. Haven't the wrestlers with that type of gimmick always been heels?

And hell, let's face it. There IS a preconception by a lot of people that pro wrestling IS geared towards what some people would consider what homosexuals like anyway: big, muscled oiled up guys in little shorts grabbing and touching each other. A lot of moves involve one guy having his head between the other guy's legs, ect. I'm not saying that I think it's gay or anything like that, I'm just saying that perhaps an ambigousuly (sp) gay wrestler is so popular because it can be used by people to say "Only that one guy is "fruity" the rest are ok, and therefore I'm not gay if I watch it." Or maybe their laughing at the preconception I mentioned above. This is just my armchair psycology, btw.

Weren't Lenny and Lodi actually praised by GLAAD? For some reason, I remember some tidbit about them making the top 100 list of gay or lesbian people of the year.

I don't know about that, but GLAAD sent a letter to WCW or to TNT complaining about the angle, and it was pulled as a result. In one of the other Chuck and Billy threads I posted a URL to a Washington Post article documenting the controversy. [which was made into an easily clickable link by CRZ!]

ROFL...Billy sheds some light on the controversy. Well..not really *grin*

(from wwf.com)
Other than getting a bloody nose, Billy said he was pleased with the match, even though he and his partner, Chuck, didn't win. He also asked WWF.com to pass along another message to the fans.

"Just let everybody know that we really like chicks," Billy said with a laugh. "They just keep backing out on us."

going back to what someone said earlier, billy and chuck aren't getting heel heat because they're "gay" but because they're stuck on themselves. (that being said, i'd love their new name to be "the gym bunnies".)

by not outright saying they're gay, that they just REALLY admire each other's physiques, the wwf has "plausible deniability" if someone from the gay community pipes up. they can have their cake and eat it too.

they can also be seen by some as playing up something that happens pretty often - the ostensibly gay guy who tells himself "i only do this when i can't get a chick", then brushes off every chick that comes his way.

point blank - billy and chuck aren't flaming. they aren't playing the "gay sambo" that jack on "will and grace" does, something i personally have mixed emotions about.

too much played it over the top, and i'm basing that on the raw match where one of them had a singles match and the other was on commentary with a buttload of double entendres ("brian's on top." "there's something you don't see often.") lenny and lodi took their schtick into ring - grinning during certain moves and whatnot. billy and chuck are more subtle than too much and they drop that apect of their gimmick once they get in the ring.

as to a gay face: i think the fans could cheer one but only in the wwf. jeff hardy could do it. the thing is - being gay can't be the entirety of his character and he can't bring it into the ring.

ps: GLAAD complained about lenny and lodi but a gay magazine, OUT i think, put them on a "Hot 100" list. iirc, gold dust got that honor back in the day as well.

The most ironic thing about the whole gay debate is that wrestling is one of the most homoerotic shows on television anyway. I mean, really, it's built men in their underwear (or at least shirtless) grabbing each other.
Not to insult wrestling, just saying if they're gonna complain about a gay-based angle....

Insert clever comment.

Billy and Chuck are a very funny pair, but I would not mistake them as being gay. They should join Jericho in the "All-Conceited" Team.
