Early Kane (which is hopefully what he's starting to go back towards), Early Mankind (non goofy version), and zombie/wizard/undead/whatever Undertaker are my top 3.

Honky's heel heat came because of his brief face run. He was *such* a pandering twit when he really was telling the audience how great they were and such...but when he turned up the Elvisizing, and made it clear that all of his words about the audience reeked of sarcasm, *everybody* wanted to see Honky get what he had coming. And the WWF strung the fans along for a year and a half (beating Jake at Wrestlemania III, winning the I-C title from Steamboat, and using every underhanded trick in the book to remain The Greatest Intercontinental Champion Of All Time) until the big Ultimate Warrior blowoff squash at Summerslam. Not only did he draw money as a heel, but the Summerslam match was ultimately what got Ultimate Warrior over as a major face that the fans got into (you don't believe me, listen as the crowd goes mild during his match with Hercules at Wrestlemania IV...)

In no particular order

The Evil Doink- Basically I feel the same as OMEGA. Borne played that role to perfection, maybe thats why vince axed it and turned him face. That whole fued with Crush was gold, he made Crush look so foolish in that fued. Gotta love that Wrestlemania moment when the 2nd clown came in and hit Crush with the cast. Then two Doinks did that mirror act with their hands and had me pissing my pants.

Bezerker- The fucker held his hand out and yelled husk, and that's all I have to say!

Undertaker- I remeber watching scamble vision the night he debuted at the Survivor Series, and even in my nine year old state of markish ignorance thought that he would turn out like Zues, some monster to be fed to Hogan. Shit, I was wrong! He had his ups and downs, but the character may have held the WWF together through those lean years.

Goldust- Now he's a tired comedy act in the midcard, but in the late summer of 95 Golddust's gimmick was a total 180 to the pre-teen direction that the "New Generation" was taking. Most people credit Austin 3:16 as the turning point in the WWF's "attitude". While Austin got the ball rolling, It was the Golddust character that furnished the ball.

I agree with the Honky Tonk Man, Undertaker, and Golddust. I'd have to add - whether or not you think it's a character after all these years - Hulk Hogan. Face it, Vince's massive promotion of the marketable Hogan really put the WWF on the map, and Bischoff's promotion of the heel-turned Hogan lit the fires under WCW (for better or for worse).

He had a pretty good-looking suplex, too. I gotta give him that.

After reading a few others in this thread....ARGH. I forgot Goldust. One of the best ever, whether he's all homo-ed out, or just being all crazy like now.

Gangrel ruled. I kept waiting for a "BITING" angle. Bastards never delivered.

All time fave of course Undertaker '90-'99. His entrances were beautiful and fascinating and he looked awesome in long black locks and pale skin. ...And he wrestled well too.
Honorable mention to Jake the Snake, who probably set the standard for a 'Taker character and who also just plain rocked.
No one's mentioned Waylon Mercy?
Edge & Christian totally reeked of everything awesomeness back in the day, characters or not. They were great as the briefly lived Los Conquistadors too. Wait, was that them? They also also rocked as the Brood. They can make anything look good, the ultimate team.
What about Raven?(yes and thats quoting him ha ha..) I loved him as the moaning, leather jacket wearing poet.
Evil Doink was indeed pretty cool.
Rocky in the NOD.
This is well before my time but Superstar Billy Graham certainly has to be credited for paving the way for what became Hulk Hogan, in more ways than one.
And Mr. Bob Backlund ('94). Yes everyone could've learned something from him.

My faith in humanity has been largely restored by repeated Evil Doink love in this thread.

He indeed ruled on many, many levels. If ever there was a gimmick I wanted them to resurrect t'would be his.

"No one's mentioned Waylon Mercy?"

I would vote for Waylon, but he was there for such a short time. His Intro vignetes were great, almost as good Razor's. But other then destorying Doink's carrer, he was just jobbed for "Make a Differance" Fatu. Then he was canned.

Reminder, I was asking about greatest _WWF_ characters, the ones churned out by Vince and his creative team. You can't, for example, call Ric Flair a great WWF character just because he "Whoo"'d in the WWF!

Jake Roberts was Jake Roberts everywhere he wrestled. The only thing Vince did was give him a snake to carry to the ring.

Waylon Mercy had potential, but wasn't around nearly long enough to tell whether he could have lived up to it.

The second coming of Bob Backlund was certainly different...but I don't think that they "created" that character so much as it was Bob Backlund showing his true personality in a highly concentrated dose.

Sorry, if this thread has been made in the past, but if it was, then I just might as well resurrect it. Well, anyways I always thought that RAW & Smack down together, was a better show.
