Situation: Cardinals have men on 1st and 2nd, none out. Mike Matheny hits one to left field, and Frankie Catalanotto (Jays LF) clearly short-hops it. The second base umpire, closest to the play, calls it an out. Frankie Cat throws it to 2B Orlando Hudson, and Hudson steps on the bag to get out the runner who took off from second (thinking the ball was a hit), and then tags the runner coming from first. Triple play.

Then Tony LaRussa comes out to argue. Then the umpires huddle and....THEY CHANGE THE CALL?!?! Matheny is given a hit, and the bases are suddenly loaded with no outs. Carlos Tosca, Toronto's manager, is understandably pissed, and gets tossed from the game. St. Louis then goes onto score two runs in that inning.

IMO, despite being biased as a Blue Jays fan, this was one of the more bullshit calls I've ever seen. I have NEVER seen an umpire in any level of baseball actually change a call like that before. Utter insanity.

In the issues of December 16th, 2000 to November 10th, 2001, we may have given the impression that George W. Bush had been legally and duly elected president of the United States. We now understand that this may have been incorrect, and that the election result is still too close to call. The Economist apologizes for any inconvenience.

Isn't it important that they got it right? It's not like the umps broke tradition and used replay in the game to correct the call. (Not that I'm not biased as well, but on the replay you could see the ball hitting the ground before he gloved it.) We bitch about bad umpiring, then they get something right for once --- applaud these great men.

Theoreticaly, getting the right call is important. But the fact that the third base umprire made the out call on the short hop changed the way the leftfielder played the ball. Had he thrown to third a runner would have been forced out.
As it happened he through to second ahead of the runner going to second which should have been a force out.
Either way the Jays should have gotten one out called if not the original three. Instead they got none which is just wrong. I too am biased by the way.

Hell, does it even really matter? The Jays couldn't touch Woody anyway.

After the missed play, the Jays' spirits were so crushed that Woody had an easy ride. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
