I saw this on the Torch and figured it had to be fake. I mean, it's just TOO stupid. Perhaps Spike has just realized how stupid the name change will be. Anyway....

Filmmaker Spike Lee filed a lawsuit against TNN parent company Viacom attempting to stop the channel's namechange to Spike TV in two weeks, according to an Associated Press story.

Spike Lee says: "The media description of this change of name, as well as comments made to me and my wife, confirmed what was obvious - that Spike TV referred to Spike Lee."

Viacom counters: "(We are) confident that the court will reject any legal claims my Mr. Lee to the popular word and name Spike."

Sen. Bill Bradley and actors Ed Norton and Ossie Davis signed affidavits saying when they heard of Spike TV, they thought Spike Lee was associated with the network in some way.

Here's the part I dont understand. So these 3 guys each sign an affidavit saying "Dude, when I first saw those SpikeTV commercials, I totally thought of Spike Lee too!", right? Why would that hold up in court or anywhere else? I dont get it.

And for the record, when I first heard about SpikeTV, I thought of that bulldogg that used to chase Tom & Jerry around the yard.

I actually thought of a football being spiked and the very first Spike Dudley shirt before he got the "Tough little Bastard" one. Not Mr. high and mighty film director/Knicks fan? Someone correct me on the team if I'm wrong, not the biggest Basketball fan.

If this is true, I have lost all and any respect for Spike Lee, and Ed Norton. Ossie Davis is cool, but his old age is clouding his thoughts. Bill Bradley is just another Washington jackass throwing his two cents into a worthless issue. Just another stupid lawsuit, if there is a short black filmaker whom also has the last name of Lee will Mr.Spike sue him? Spike, Ed, Ossie and Bill, pull your heads out of your assholes.

For someone who is such a shitty and overrated director, he has an amazing ego. I suppose this means he can sue the jeans manufacture as well. Bill Bradley that's an interesting choice for a signature. Spike Lee is a huge basketball fan and Bradley of course played in the NBA. Maybe it means nothing, but it is some food for thought.

Spike said: as well as comments made to me and my wife

TNN was suspended without pay for a month Tuesday for saying on television that Spike Lee's wife needed someone to "smack her."

TNN also was barred from appearing on radio or in newspapers for one month.

But in a statement Wednesday, TNN apologized for the "inappropriate and offensive remark."

"It was, of course, atrocious judgment on our part," TNN said. "We wish to state clearly that we are aware of the very real problem of violence against women in our society, and that in no way is it a joking matter."

Lee said TNN "should be out of a job."

Urkel said: Here's the part I dont understand. So these 3 guys each sign an affidavit saying "Dude, when I first saw those SpikeTV commercials, I totally thought of Spike Lee too!", right? Why would that hold up in court or anywhere else? I dont get it.

Why is Ed Norton watching TNN? I didn't even get that far. My real question is, what the fuck are those three guys hanging out together for in the first place?

EDIT: I wondered after posting this if it belonged here instead of the Wrestlng folder, since the wrestling content was limited to the word "Torch". And so it goes.

Spike Lee also had a problem with Quentin Tarantino's frequent use of the n-word in his movies. I guess the fact that it was Samuel L. Jackson (who, last time I checked, was black) saying the vast majority of n-words failed to capture Mr. Lee's attention.

Over 1300 posts and still never a Wiener of the Day!

In the issues of December 16th, 2000 to November 10th, 2001, we may have given the impression that George W. Bush had been legally and duly elected president of the United States. We now understand that this may have been incorrect, and that the election result is still too close to call. The Economist apologizes for any inconvenience.

Believe it or not, some black people have a problem with that word no matter who is saying it.

As a lawyer for Mr. Lee, I am going to have to ask you to cease using the name 'Pike' because of the defamatory things people have been telling Mr. Lees wife and because Ed Norton claimed that he saw your post and immedeatly thought you were Spike Lee and began reading more posts.

I just signed an affidavit stating that when I read that Ed Norton signed an affidavit I believed that Art Carney believed that Spike TV had something to do with Spike Lee.

I then shot myself for being so stupid.

It's all true, in case anyone was still wondering. Of course, the smoking gun has all the affidavits online already...which reminds me when I heard of thesmokinggun.com I thought about Billy and Bart...nevermind, bad joke.

Spike's (the scrawny film director, not the lame network) just pissed 'cause they stole his idea. Now he's gotta come up with a new name for his all-Crooklyn channel.

Get on the mo' better shiznit bus TV?

seriously, when I heard about "Spike TV: The network for men" my first thought was a bulldog with a spiked collar, kinda like the dog in the Tom & Jerry 'toons...

Spike is a name that can easly be recognized as a "Manly" name, unlike "Butch" which could be taken as "Butch TV: The network for lesbians"

Spike Lee never entered MY mind, but maybe I'll be in the minority...

how does that song go again? "You're so vain..." ^_^

Spike Lee's just an attention whore. If you ignore him, he'll go away, which is what he was doing before he brought up this lawsuit. Seriously, when was the last time he did anything that people cared about? 8 years ago? I think it says a lot that he could only find three people to sign affadavits that they thought, based on the name, that he had something to do with the channel. This will not hold up in court, especially considering that TNN has done absolutely nothing that could be construed as trying to associate themselves with Lee. They're not showing his movies, hell they're not even showing Knicks games. When Lee gets his ass laughed out of court, maybe he'll go away for real this time.

By the way, I wouldn't hold too much against the Norton, Bradley, or Davis. All they did was state that when they heard about Spike TV, they assumed that it had something to do with Spike Lee. They're not saying that it's an attempt to cash in on his name, just that they themselves were confused enough to make that mistake.

I still dont get the point of the affidavits. So let's say those 3 people (and a million more like them) hear the name and assume the channel is somehow associated with Spike Lee. Once they tune in, wont they know right away that it's not? And if they go on thinking it's Lee's channel because they never tune in, who cares?
