Ok, so i was watching X-Play on Tech TV today and they were having their E3 show and they talked a little bit about online gaming. So I did some thinking. Man it would be great to actually have some competition in the sports games I love so much since I don't have many friends who enjoy video games. As much fun as it is to beat Florida State 70 - 3, i would like some competition. So of course I started thinking about starting online gaming. But I had some questions and hoped my fellow wieners could help.
1. I have both a Gamecube and PS2. They both have online capabilities right? Is either one better than the other?
2. How does the modem plug into your computer? (this is important because a month ago I bought an iPod and then found out the software for a USB chord doesn't come out til June so it's been collecting dust for a month)
3. Are there other games besides sports games and games like Everquest that are online?
4. When playing sports games does it keep your stats against certain other users, or teams, or keep your stats as a certain team?
5. When playing someone else online can you only play them in an exibition mode? Or can you get a bunch of people together and each pick a team in a season?
6. NCAA Football is my favorite game, any idea if this year's installment will be online?
7. I had NBA Live on the computer at one time, and tried playing it online, but when I played everyone else had stopped playing and there was never anyone to play against. Does this problem happen a lot? Or are there usually always people to play even months after a game comes out?

I don't know about the Gamecube, but the PS2 does.

For the PS2, there's an online adaptor which runs around $35 or so. The modem/Cat5 plugs into that.

Yup; As mentioned before, I'm playing a lot of Tribes: Aerial Assault. There's Amplitude, which is Frequency2... there should be more out, and I think there will be.
One more thing: get Broadband; the games I play usually have no lag on that.

PS2 is way better. Gamecube has online capability, but less than a handful of games that can support it. (Last I heard, only one...Phantasy Star Online).
As for other games, the Tony Hawk series is online as well.

NCAA Football 2004 will have online support for the PS2 (and probably Gamecube, too I suppose).
Speaking of which, you can beat FSU by 67 points? On Heisman? Even with the sliders cranked all the way up for the CPU, and all the way down for you? Heck, one day I just hope I move up from All-American, but I refuse to do so until I have a National Championship trophey in my trophey case.
I know, I suck at videogames. (I do play with downtrodden teams, such as Memphis and attempt to build them up, one day I'm going to start over with a good team and see how I can do now)
I didn't know that the GameCube had online support, but the Playstation2's online support gets better every month. There are quite a few games with online support with plenty more coming out. A few off the top of my head that I personally own:
ATV Offroad Fury 2 SOCOM: US Navy Seals Tribes: Aerial Assault NBA Live NBA 2K3 Midnight Club 2 Automodellista Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 My Street
For pretty much every online game, there is a separate mode to play online (as opposed to just taking a single-player mode online), and each game has its own special online features. With sports games, you usually just play a single exhibitition-type game against another player, but for some games you can set up an online tournament or playoff. Also, most games keep track of your record and stats so that online players can see which players are around their own skill level. Games like SOCOM and Tribes that allow you to play in huge groups of people (up to 16 with Tribes) are the most fun.
Is there a general feeling about online play for PS2 games? I think that with the exception of My Street, every online mode I've seen is at least as good as the single player offline mode and quite often is better.
I've got no intention of paying a montly fee to play a game that I already own; hence, I have no intention of joining the online gamers on PS2.
Even though my three-time defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers football team rules you all. LOL...

As far as I know, there are only a few game companies that plan on charging for PS2 online gaming (EA is one of them). At this point, I think Everquest is the only game that charges. I'll never EVER pay for online gaming, but I'll still continue to buy Playstation2 games with online support because so many games are not ever going to charge a fee.
