I don't think Tito Santana was ever a heel, and I don't think Ted Dibiase was ever a face. The Ultimate Warrior never turned heel. Honky Tonk Man was never face. Wow, I'm seeing a pattern here. I guess heel/face turns are just really common in recent years.

Love stuff like this, so I contribute mine:

Chris Benoit - face. Close call, I love him on both sides, but a face Benoit clicks more with me.

Kurt Angle - Heel. My favorite wrestler of all time.

Chris Jericho - WCW-like heel. Not the whiny pussy he is nowadays.

Mick Foley - Face. I loved to cheer his crazy sick-ass bumps, and it is more fun to do when he is a face.

The Rock - Heel. Rock plays both parts to perfection, and whatever he is, I will always love him, but the way he plays with the crowd as a heel is unbeaten!

Shawn Michaels - Heel. Shawn as the 1993 IC-Champ was too great!

Scott Hall - Face. See above, his feud with heel Shawn is my favorite feud ever!

Hunter Hearst Helmsley - Heel. I don't buy him as a face now, only in DX he was okay, but he has heel written all over his forehead.

Bret Hart - tied. First I thought his heel runs sucked, but the more I think about it, the more I like it, because it gave him edges I did not think he had.

Curt Hennig - heel. Towel throws and the Coach.......aaaah, good old times!

Edge - heel. Not that I don't like him as a face, but when he mocked others, he was best.

John Cena - Never seen him as a face, so I can't tell.

Christian - heel. He can become the ultimate heel if they give him the ball and let him run.

Eddie Guerrero - heel. Eddie is a heel, period. Plus, when he was a face, his hairstyle sucked.

Rob Van Dam - heel. The cocky arrogant bastard was exactly what I liked about him.

Rey Mysterio Jr. - Face. I'm going with Omega here, his wrestling style can't make people hate him.

Ric Flair - heel. One of the greatest heels in the history of this business.

Sweet dreams......

I don't wanna be a bitch about this, but I have the Hulk Hogan DVD and they have Hogan's first match in the WWF/E/WWWF and he was a HEEL fighting against Dibiase as a FACE. Very strange bizzaro situation. I don't know if you'd count that because Dibiase was still a few years away from his Million Dollar Man gimmick, but he was indeed a beardless face back in 1979.

To clarify on Dusty, yes, he was a heel. He joined with the Outsiders to form sort of a mini-stable within the NWO.

Rey Mysterio I think is correct - to my knowledge, never a heel.

And about Bret and the stomach shield, he was a "heel" at that time...but he was totally the face that night against Goldberg, they were in Canada. It wouldn't have worked as well had the crowd not gone as nuts for Bret as they did.

Ted had some face time in UWF, I think. And I question the heelish things HTM did at times. He got a lot of face pops at the shows I went to back in the day. Was "The Matedor" a face? I am sure he was...

Now, Rev. Slick was never a face and neither was Bro. Love. I can tell you for sure that Verge Gagne never did the heel thing and neither did the kid. Was tricky Nick Bockwinkle ever a face? I think I remember him being one toward the end for awhile.

Ted DiBiase was a face for a while in WCW, though not as a wrestler. The Steiner Brothers had, during the nWo's first run, a feud with the Outsiders, and DiBiase defected as manager to the (technically heel) Hall and Nash to the (technically face) Steiner Brothers. *From memory*, Bossman was working for WCW at the time under the name "Ray Traylor" (though I could be thinking of someone else here). He joined the nWo after Bischoff's first turn (when he demand that everyone join the nWo), and was injured soon after. He wasn't visited in hospital by any of the fed's main eventers, and on his return, the angle was played out with a "worked-shoot" interview against the leaders of the nWo. After the standard issue beat down, he became the "de-facto" 3rd Steiner brother for a 6 man tag at Starrcade... correct me if I'm wrong with any of that.

I'll also confirm that Dusty was a member of the WoLFPAC for a while with Hall and Nash. Keep in mind this was while Sean / Syxx / XPac was still with the compan and before the tragic WoLFPACK split started about a year later.

As for face Curt Hennig, would you classify the West Texas Rednecks as a face group? For those of you who missed the angle, late in Bischoff's first run, Bischoff decided to look to celebrities and musicians to try and spike Nitro's ratings. This includes Wrestlecrap like Jay Leno, Karl Malone, and Dennis Rodman in the ring, Kiss and Megadeth concerts during Nitro, Nitro featuring DJ Ran appearing for no particular reason in the middle of their shows, the Konnan music videos, Raven and DDP featuring in another band's music video, the pro wrestling return of the Insane Clown Posse, the wrestling debut of punk band The Misfits, the creation (I forget whether they debuted then or later) of the evil boy band "3 Count", and Goldberg's Drums of War replaced by Megadeth's Crush 'Em in a cross promotion for some Jean Claude Van Damme movie no-one saw. Anyway, Bisch decided to burn more money hiring rapper Master P as a wrestler, and repackaged a bunch of wrestlers as the "No Limit Soldiers", or something like that. He then booked Curt Henning, Bobby Duncum Jr, and a couple of other wrestlers as a heel country music band named the West Texas Rednecks. The only problem was that Master P got booed out of pretty much every WCW show he played, and after the corny "I hate rap" song the Rednecks played in a concert during Nitro, ended up the clearly over faces out of it (by the way kids, yep all that really happend, just in case anyone's still wondering why WCW went outta business or how they blew millions of dollars that year). Anyway - back to my point - would said Rednecks be classed as a heel or a face stable?

Rey2D2 was indeed a heel for a while--when they first formed the Filthy Animals stable, they were heels. Yes, it does violate every logical principle of wrestling booking to have a heel who is always going to be 100 pounds or more lighter than any opponent, but in that era WCW violated every logical principle of wrestling booking every time they stepped into a venue.

As for West Texas Rednecks, I would say that they started out as a heel stable and became a face stable (due, as AJ outlined, to fan reaction). Somewhat embarrasing for WCW because there were racist overtones to the WTR's act.

Speaking of which, I'm thinking there are some workers with ethnic-stereotype characters who stayed heel throughout their careers. I know at least one of the Koloffs became a face eventually, but what about the WWF guys, like the Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff? And please, PLEASE tell me that Col. DeBeers never became a face!

I'm not as up on the careers of wrestlers from before my time, but I'd guess that a good number of the guys from the 50s or so stayed on one side throughout their careers.

Volkoff might have been a quasi face for awhile if I'm remembering correctly.

Bret Hart was never a credible heel? I remember hating the Hart Foundation in the 80s. They were tough to beat and were pretty convincing heels.

"Despite the above explanation, some people, especially among scientists, suggest that science may not entertain intelligent causes. This notion is certainly mistaken. The abductive inference is very much at home in modern science. Retrospective causal reasoning is routinely used by NASA scientists as they explore the heavens looking for signs of intelligence in their SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) program. If signals from space conveyed artificial electromagnetic pulses sent in code to give, for example, the first thousand digits in the transcendental number 3.14159..., this would be considered so improbable an occurrence that we concur that intelligence had sent it. If scientists ever receive radio signals that are distinguished from noise and have the indicia of intelligence, we can surely expect a jubilant announcement from Washington." -Charles Thaxton

Not sure about the Iron Sheik but Nikoli Volkof turned face when Lithuania broke away from the USSR. He teamed with Hacksaw Jim Duggan for a while as "The Patriots" or some such.

Actually, Sting was a heel waaaaayy back in the day when he was a Blade Runner (Mid-South/UWF) along with "Rock" who went to WCCW to become the Dingo Warrior. Wonder what happened to that guy?

Sting teamed with Eddie Gilbert for a while (from every woman's dream...from every man's nightmare..), although the fans wanted to cheer him.

I believe when the Acid Trippin' Dudley Brother debuted in ECW as part of the Dudley gang, they were heels but he quickly broke away from them and became a face.

I think Rev. Slick was a face on a few occasions. One time I know for certain was when he was managing Kamala during the "You are a Man" gimmick. Yeesh.

Also, someone else asked about Nikolai Volkoff. I'm not sure about teaming with Jim Duggan, but there was some time in the mid-90s I think where he came back to the WWF as a poor guy that needed some money. He would wear the same suit to all the WWF shows every week. Eventually he got a job (from DiBiase, perhaps?) and since DiBiase was just flaunting his money and treating Volkoff like shit, Volkoff became face. Didn't he turn face when he ended up breaking free of DiBiase's control or something?

Was Rey a heel when he was in the LWO? I'm pretty sure that he was a heel as part of the early Filthy Animals.

By being the biggest (and probably only) Jim Powers fan, Paul Roma teamed with Jim Powers to become the Young Stallions!... Teaming with Jim Powers, Jim's babyface charisma had to rub off on Roma, unfortunately also his incredible jobbing ability.

Paul Roma was a face back when he was teamed with Jim Powers in the Young Stallions.....what a crappy team.

Mr. Perfect's most obvious face run was from 1992-1993 when he feuded against Ric Flair, Lex Luger and Shawn Michaels.

In the issues of December 16th, 2000 to November 10th, 2001, we may have given the impression that George W. Bush had been legally and duly elected president of the United States. We now understand that this may have been incorrect, and that the election result is still too close to call. The Economist apologizes for any inconvenience.

The Young Stallions may have been crappy, but they also stole "Girls In Cars" for the entrance music. Jimmy Hart wrote that especially for the Hart Foundation!

StingArmy,

While Rey was indeed a member of the LWO, he was actually the only face member of the stable. He was the first person to turn down the honor of membership, but he was eventually forced to after losing a match to, I believe, Juventud Guerrera.

Eddie Guerrero made it all the more humiliating for Rey by forcing him to wear a size 3XL T-shirt.

Ironically, when the Elite Wolfpac formed and beat up on LWO members to the point where President Flair disbanded the group, Rey Mysterio was the only member who refused to remove his LWO T-shirt. That got him into trouble with the Elite Wolfpac, eventually leading to an Outsiders vs. Rey and Konnan match pitting Elizabeth's hair against Rey's mask. The Outsiders lost, and Rey was forced to dismask. The following night, Rey defeated Kevin Nash in one of the most shocking upsets in WCW history.

Actually, The Young Stallions stole `Crank It Up', which was another Jimmy Hart classic. The storyline reason for this was that Roma and Powers were trying to anger Jimmy Hart enough into getting a title shot at his Hart Foundation.
