There is a reason why Ric Flair has had a stellar 30-odd year career in the squared circle. Any aspiring young gun who wants a lesson in how to make it to the top of this business need only look at Flair's performance tonite, starting with his two backstage vignettes. The one with Michaels conveyed the emotion, The One with Triple H showed the fire. The match showed that you can entertain the fans without one high-spot after another. Flair was THE MAN, Flair is THE MAN, Flair will be THE MAN! There will truly Never be another one like him. If there was any justice in this world at all, Triple H would be carrying Flair's luggage.

Flair is THE MAN, I won't dispute that. He actually had me interested in an HGH match, and I didn't even feel dirty afterward! A big ass WOOOOO, goes to him!

HHH, on the other hand, ain't shit. He's got injured ribs. Bitch is taped up like Kenta Kobashi, yet he can't bother to sell for more than a few seconds?! Talentless slug...

Flair needs to drop HGH and manage (and serve as mouthpiece for) Chris Benoit. Imagine Flair acting as the talker, while Benoit does all the wrestling. No more Silent but violent, no more "toothless aggression, just Ric Flair and his guard dog running roughshod over everyone!

HHH is a talentless slug, and he ain't shit? Hmm, for you to call HHH talentless, you must be some sort of God. I mean seriously, you may hate the guy because he is the champ right now. But that isn't really all his fault. There are writers you know. I'm sure you're just chock full of talent. That's why you're here and he is well, he's there.

Oh, and I guess you were never a DX fan, were ya?

Wow. ECA must have seen a different match than I did. This was a good match, but if you believed a 50 year old carried a talentless slug to a good match, well I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to know that that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The Flair of today can no longer carry broomsticks (don't get me wrong, he was busting his ass and was also part of the reason the match was good)

Triple H was selling his ass off, all match long and even after the match. You know when he was crawling up the ramp, Nash hadn't even touched him. What was he selling if not the effects of the Flair match (and I guess to some extent, the effects of the Nash match the night before)?

I was pleasantly surprised by the match myself, I really enjoyed that. I thought it would be chock full of interference like most, but it wasn't. That and I was really into it. On the argument of talentless slugs, do you think that if it was Nash instead of HHH, would it be half the match it actually was? Be honest...

Personally, I thought the crying was just a bit hokey (though, had they done that last year right before he ended up managing HHH, would have been just fine). But at least it got people interested in a Triple H match, and for about 1 minute, I was actually insane enough to think they'd give him back the gold. So yeah, Flair IS gawd.

I was impressed with the Shawn Michaels chat and crying, and I was pretty pumped for the match, figuring there was at least a CHANCE that they'd let Flair win it in North Carolina, or at least have HHH DQ himself or something to make Flair look good. I wasn't really happy with the clean finish, but both guys worked a decent match.

You can pretty much set your watch to the fact that NO ONE goes over in their hometown anymore -- JR in Oklahoma, Booker T in Houston (uh oh, doesn't bode well for the PPV), Hardyz or Flair in North Carolina, Raven in The Bowery, etc.

I thought that was actually a good match ... Flair is a god ... he's forgotten more that most will ever know ... I don't care if he's 100 years old, he can still carry a match better than over half the roster.

Can they please start working towards an HBK/Flair PPV singles match? If there was ever a time to get this match done, it's now.

i got no problem with Flair.
he's aiight.
but seriously, he needs a larger arsenal then
1 - chop
2 - occaisonal suplex
3 - figure four.

they need to bulk out his wrestling offense a little more. i dunno, teach the old bugger how to fight a bigger fight.

picture flair full nelson slamming some one
or even something little, like a pendulem back braker or something. just a few more moves, because "slap - woooo, slap - wooooo, slap - wooooo" gets boring.

I read this is what happened after the match:

After Nash gets done staring down HHH, he goes over to check on Flair. While he's over there Shawn Michaels' music hits and here comes HBK with a ton of wrestlers (face and heel) in street clothes from the back. The crowd doesn't know what's going on until they all arrive and start hugging Flair. Austin's music hits. He slides in one sing of the ring and out the other to get a cooler of beer. He takes one to Flair. Then goes to get more for the other wrestlers in the ring. Now Stephanie McMahon's music hits and she comes down to hug Flair. Now Shane McMahon's music hits! Shane O'Mac! He comes dancing down the ramp to come congratulate Flair. Next it's Vince. He comes down walking hurriedly and intensely gets in the ring and stares down Flair before cracking a bit of a smile and hugging Flair. HHH comes back out next. When he gets in the ring, everybody goes to each side of Flair. While HHH stares down Flair his cheers turn to boos. But the boos went to cheers (biggest pop of the night) when he took the belt and placed it on Flair's shoulder and raised his arm. All the guys then took Flair up on their shoulders and carried him around the ring.

The crowd is yelling "speech, speech, speech," and a teary-eyed Flair obliges. He says he's made a lot of memories here in Greenville (he wrestled here virtually every Monday night when I was a kid). He thanks the fans and his fellow wrestlers and says they've been the greatest to work with and he's never been happier than his time spent with them the past couple of years.

By the way, Storm's gimmick includes 1.) telling the audience to shut up, and 2.) occasionally making everyone stand for the Canadian national anthem. You know they don't know what to do with a wrestler when he's making fans stand for a national anthem. It's like waving a white flag and saying, "This guy has no personality -- we give up."

Ringmistress, if the match was Ric Flair vs. Kevin Nash, I'd be beyond the bitching on Weinerboard stage and well into the rabid demands for the heads of whoever made the match. Damn right, HHH still ain't shit as far as I'm concerned. But you dig him, and I can respect that.

Kgriffey79 could take a lesson from you. At least you met a different opinion with a cogent argument. HE is right about one thing... I am just chock full of talent ;-)

And yes, when I read about the "retirement parade" for Flair... I choked up a bit. Then I butched up, had a beer and had a beer with the fellas! Seriously though, I thought it was a classy thing to do.

Y'all might not remember Flair's big hurrah at the Bi-Lo Center. It was back on Sept. 14, 1998 (written about here: http://slashwrestling.com/nitro/980914.html). Flair was making his first return to WCW after a reallife spat with Eric about an alleged no-show. He was gone for quite awhile.

When he came back, in Greenville, we went bonkers and yelled and applauded and screamed for what seemed like hours. It was a great moment. Everyone who was at that show talks about it whenever someone wrestles at the Bi-Lo Center. I couldn't be at the show last night, but I would have loved to have been there for that post-show spectacle.

Nice job, WWE, for giving the man the respect he deserves.

And way to go, Flair, for ALMOST Pedigreeing Hunter.

I see it probably as an "unofficial retirement" because retirements in wrestling never last. This way is better because no one buys retirements anymore anyways. Now if a storyline calls for Flair to wrestle again, no one will have egg on their face.

Flair showed that wrestling is a skill, and while it might atrophy over time, it never completely goes away.

Ten bucks says that if Steamboat and Flair are booked next Monday for a 20 minute match, it would still out-class 90% of the roster.

If Steamboat-FLair were booked for a 20 minute match and allowed to work THEIR style (not the WWE style) It would put me in a good mood for the next 6 months!

I am glad he's only doing the occasional match now though. It is perfect for his status, the grizzled old vet who isn't quite ready for the rocking chair and can still occasionally regulate on the young'uns!

Got that whole Nitro on tape, thanks to my brother, the self proclaimed "5th Horseman". He was in a good mood for about a year after that.
