VSP, you forgot the Sega Nomad.

Raptor, the thing that gets scrtached is actually the screen cover, and can be replaced for about $5. Not that it's really necessary, because I've had mine for some time now, and have minimal scratching on my GBA. The lack of a backlight is what pisses me off, but I mainly play mine at work, where we have fluorescent lighting, so it really makes no diff to me. Of course, if you get a GBA, installing your own backlight is the fucking coolest thing ever. On the translucent GBA's, this light makes the case glow! Fuckin' YEAH!

Ubermonkeys, you can't play Golden Sun on an SNES emu...besides, the GBA is actually more powerful than the SNES.

Eh, I'd get a GBA if I could ever get a good trade for it on the UGTZ. However, I'd never buy one. There's enough games on it to interest me into buying THEM, but I also never go anywhere, so I'm not interested enough into buying the system.

Well, I made the mistake of carrying mine around in a backpack, so it kind of got seriously scratched. I take a hell of a lot more care of it now, but the damage has been done.

Thanks for the tip on the cover replacement though. I'll look into it, because I was quite annoyed when they told me it couldn't be fixed.

Ahh, console wars. Excellent.

Earlier in the thread I opted for the PS2. Just working with what was asked. In reality, I'd go with another Dreamcast, My only complaint - while the triggers are nice, the lack of a 6 button layout really hurt Capcom fighters.

GameCube? I'll look at it this Christmas. I smell a price drop and availability at that time.

My next system will be a GBA. Need Castlevania - Circle of the Moon and Super Dodge Ball Advance. Currently, I'm engrossed in Capcom vs SNK on the Neo-Geo Pocket Color.

Grand Theft Auto 3? All that and the proverbial bag of chips. Sure, I'm stuck on an extra-crappy mission right now, but I take my aggression out by stealing fire trucks and throwing grenades into crowds. I wish Chatterbox was a real radio station.

Origami, any EB will carry an arcade-style 6 button layout stick for the DC...well, they kinda dropped their DC stock recently, so maybe not ANY EB...run, don't walk. As for a GC price drop...don't hold your breath. The PS2 will be dropping WAAAAY before the GC does.

Raptor, the EB I worked at carried replacement screen covers...the repair was as simple as peeling off the old one, and sticking on the new one. Nintendo sells them direct as well.

edit:// Origami, I bring to your attention the Enforcer arcade stick, and the Quantum Fighterpad on this page. Sorry, Raptor...couldn't find a link for a GBA screen cover...Nintendo's online store appears to be down.

Actually, no, I didn't. I'm not a huge fan of the Nomad. It sucks batteries at an unbelievable rate, doesn't have a TV tuner attachment, and plays Sega Genesis games (which I'm not a big fan of). The TurboExpress has it beat on all three counts.

(I'm not ANTI-Genesis, but the crap-to-playable ratio was pretty damn high. There were some occasional gems (Herzog Zwei, Lightening Force, Gunstar Heroes), but a lot of the games I liked were done (often better) on other systems (particularly the PC-Engine). To be fair, I had the same problem with the Super Nintendo; apart from the Square RPGs and Ogre Battle, it was mostly a wasteland. I've gotten more mileage out of my 3DO and my Jaguar than either the Genesis or the SNES, and that's saying something...)

I actually doubt the PS2 will drop in price. I'm betting they're just going to bundle their online hardware with it and keep the price the same. Damn them. I would've bought a PS2 in September if that price drop had ever come. But noooo, so now I'll remember that Nintendo is the only company that likes me, and I will never spend money on Sony's black box of evil.

vsp: 3DO and Jaguar? Dude, you're beyond hope. I'll admit that the TurboExpress was way fucking cool, but come on! You're saying that the SNES was a wasteland of crap games, and that the 3DO and Jaguar weren't! I bet your prized posession is a CD-i with both shitty Zelda games. =P

Jaguar: Sony was talking about dropping it to $199 as early as January. Last I heard, they still plan to do it. Haven't heard a word about the bundle thing, but it seems like a lame idea to me.

No, what I'm saying is this: I have Tempest 2000 and Rayman for my Jaguar, and I've played the two of those EASILY more than I've played anything on my Genesis. Maybe more than my entire Genesis collection combined. Jeff Minter is an absolute genius, and Tempest 2000 is his magnum opus. (It's a pity that they screwed up Tempest X3 on the PSX and BUTCHERED Tempest 2K on the Saturn.) They're probably two of the only four decent games on the Jag, but that's enough for me.

I've played Battlesport, Need For Speed, Super SF2 Turbo, PO'ed, Shanghai: Triple Threat, Gex and Samurai Shodown on my 3DO more than I've played anything on my Genesis.

I'm not saying that the Jag and 3DO had hordes of classic titles that far outpaced the SNES, either; the SNES had its moments, and the Jag and 3DO both had their share of stinkers. (Checkered Flag, Twisted and Plumbers Don't Wear Ties are among the worst EVER.)

But at the time, about the only things I wanted an SNES for were the Square RPGs, Bust-a-Move and Ogre Battle. Ogre, FF2, FF3 and Chrono are now available for the PSX. Bust-a-Move is everywhere. Space Megaforce is a great Aleste-family shooter, but Blazing Lazers (among others) on the Turbo blows it and most other shooters away, let alone figuring in the great TurboCD and PC-Engine SuperCD shooters out there. A lot of the Super Famicom shooters found their way to the Turbo in various configurations. Tetris Attack isn't bad, though they had to wedge that damn green pool float of a mascot into it. I am not a fan AT ALL of the Mario-family games, DK Country games or Super Metroid, so about the only reason left for me to own a SNES (IMHO) is Secret of Mana.

Which is probably why I haven't plugged in my SNES or Genesis in years, and the last time I tried either was because I picked up a Sega CDX for $20 at a flea market and popped in Popful Mail to test it...

Well, personally, I am a fan of the Mario series, and Super Mario World 1 and 2 are the two greatest platform games ever made. In my eyes, anyway. And since I don't even have a Playstation, my SNES is the only way I get to play Chrono Trigger. Also, you forgot to mention the Fire Pro series, which, while it was only available in Japan, can be counted among the classic titles on the Super Nintendo/Famicom. Starfox was incredible for its time, Super Mario RPG remains one of my favorite games of all time, and Mario Kart still remains the best game in the kart-racing subgenre. I'm sticking to my stance that the SNES was the greatest console of all time. Though the TG16, Neo-Geo, Saturn and Dreamcast all hold special places in my heart, where my blood belongs.

ironcladlou, thanks for the link. I've been searching for fighter sticks since I picked up my DC at launch. Now I can play Marvel vs Capcom the way it should be - not by reassigning the mid-strengths to the triggers and never getting your helper out when you need 'em!

My brother has a PS2. Saves me 300 bones.

I still haven't played a game on my PSX that couldn't have been done on my Dreamcast. It's a shame that piracy was so easy on that system. Piracy was the candle burning from both ends - Hardware sales (which were a loss for Sega) went up and software purchases went down.

Ugh.

No prob, Origami, though there was a better stick available around launch...can't remember many details about it. I think it was a first-party Sega peripheral. Also, I saw this badass little gadget at my EB...it was a little box that allowed you to use a PC keyboard with your Dreamcast, it was also a VMU to VMU linker, AND it let you use any PSX controller with your DC! How fucking awesome is that?

Guru, IMO, the DC is still a superior hardware platform to the PS2. For one thing, it has less polygon jaggies (built in full-screen antialiasing...DROOL), VMUs kick the PS2 memory cards' asses any day of the week, and it was based on a Windows platform, which made it easy to program for. None of that dual-proc Emotion Engine shit either. I never engaged in any DC software piracy, except for a few Japanese games that weren't available over here.

No one has to sell me on the Fire Pro series, and the SFAM versions were indeed groundbreaking. They have been surpassed by the Saturn, PSX and Dreamcast versions, of course, but that's a natural progression.

Starfox, Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG... I played them, didn't throw them out the window, but wasn't blown away. Super Mario Kart was catchy but has been redone to death since then.

The PC-Engine will always be my number one, particularly since it was an SNES contemporary. Compare Dracula X for the two systems and let me know what you think.
And as far as piracy goes, unless things have changed since I last checked, isn't PSX copying a hell of a lot easier than DC copying? On the PSX, all you need is a modchip/dongle, CloneCD and an original disc and you're set. On the DC, you can't go straight disc-to-disc; you need to find someone with the file you want (a large quest in and of itself), download hundreds of megs, buy WinRAR, buy DiscJuggler or Nero, find the Utopia Boot Disc, and so on...

Frankly, just the hassle of dealing with the wareZ community has kept me from even looking for pirated games for my DC.

I have to claim total ignorance on DC piracy, I had no idea. Just wanted to add a note about it- I remember one of the main reasons that Sega said it was going with the "GD-ROM" (the DC's disc media) was that it would prevent piracy, since it was aunique format or somesuch.

I guess that didn't work out so well...

As above, the PSX is much easier for bootleggers (one trip to Blockbuster, one CloneCD/Nero/CDRWin copy of the rented game, one mod chip/plug-in gizmo to cancel the security checks, and voila). You can't just rip a DC game and burn a copy like that -- there are obviously groups out there that have ripped DC games, but hell if I know how they do it. (It seems to me that you need Linux to pull it off, but that could be dead wrong now.)

The crippling factor here was the rise of broadband Internet feeds; now Joe Average with his DSL line can download a 600MB ISO in a couple of hours, which used to be unheard of for households. This means that both PSX and DC games can be passed around like poker chips. The DC doesn't do a particularly good job of blocking out-of-region/CDR discs on the hardware end, though I won't complain much about THAT since it lets me play my (legit) Fire Pro D with a boot-disc swap and no soldering required.

The proprietary format makes it tougher... just not tough enough. I like the DC (and owned one from day of release), but there just weren't enough games for it that excited me all that much. Crazy Taxi, Fire Pro D, Soul Calibur, and then there's a bit of a drop-off. I still want Bangai-O, though.

See, the difference is that you at least had to go to Blockbuster and rent the game. That means that someone bought it. In the DC pirate scene, people were trading the files online or grabbing them from Usenet. Add that to the fact that the games were being released before they hit the market and you've got a big problem.

DC also does not require a mod chip for piracy, because they found a way to use the WinCE code to self boot or something like that. I don't really know how it worked.

You can read all about it on the ISONEWS.com forums. I would avoid asking questions there though :) They are VERY quick to flame even reasonable questions (from my observation).

Piracy is unethical by the way. Don't be a pirate. Good systems get killed by piracy... and I would be able to buy Tony Hawk 3 for $50 on my DC instead of having to drop $400 on a PS2 and the game.

Le sigh.

On a DC, to play a pirate or import game, you needed a boot disk, such as the DC-X converter you'll see at EBs. Either that, or the code from the boot disk needs to be put on the pirated game.

As far as the proprietary GD-ROM thing goes, in order to rip it to a regular CD, you had to remove some of the information, such as a few music tracks, MOST of the time. Of course, different games take up different amounts of disk space, so some games could just be ripped clean off the GD's.
