Mafia Massacre and Diablo Destruction are the two Toyz van missions for Portland. (There are two more in the other city sections.) Look for light blue vans with a black "Toyz 'n Da Hood" logo on the side; one is tucked away in the lower end of Saint Mark's near Toni's restaurant, while the other is in (relatively) plain sight in Hepburn Heights near the El-Train stairs. Enter the van for two minutes of exploding radio-controlled car bliss, and repeat as necessary. (I strongly suggest finding Mafia Massacre BEFORE the Mafia gets ticked at you. The Diablo one you can do any time.)

Patriot Playground is one of four excruciating offroad missions, where you have to drive a vehicle over challenging terrain through timed checkpoints. The Patriot in the Supa Save parking lot activates this one; its fifteen checkpoints start behind the supermarket, go all the way down the beach and up into Salvatore's mansion area. (Despite this, it is safe to save it for later; oddly enough, the one place in Saint Mark's that the Mafia won't trouble you is in their boss's inner sanctum. If you go the back way, you can get up to Salvatore's house and steal a Mafia Sentinel later on without a single shot fired at you.)

Be prepared to scream -- it's unnervingly difficult without the Offroad Missions FAQ from GameFAQs, and even then it's hard enough that you'll need to change your camera angle at least twice to spot precariously-placed checkpoints.

Lessee. Five missions for Luigi, six for Joey, five for Toni, four for Marty Chonks, four for El Burro, the ones listed above and Salvatore's four should cover it. Found all 31 hidden packages in Portland yet? (33, really, but two can't be found until you leave and come back.)

Thanks, vsp. I had no idea about any of that. I've only got about 4 hidden packages! Looks like I'll have a busy night tonight.

Heh... or you could just look for the Scarface soundtrack, which is where Flashback FM's songs came from.

(I'm partial to K-Jah Radio, myself, which is why I ordered a copy of "Scientist Rids The World of the Evil Curse of Vampires" from Amazon. Most of the other GTA3 tracks are out there as MP3s -- try gta3warehouse.com.)

I'm at 99% complete right now, and gnashing my teeth trying to get the last percentage point by completing Ambulance Level 12. Just keeping the ambulance from blowing up by Level 9 is more than difficult enough for me.

I like all the radio stations, but it just seemed that WAAAAY too often I'd jack a new car and Flashback would be on. I'd then be too busy making my gettaway to actively listen to it and realize that "Take it to the limit" was planting itself in my subconscious. Argh, it's still playing. I think my favorite stations were the Techno/Trance station and Game Radio.

FINALLY!

I finished all twelve Paramedic missions tonight, and picked up that last elusive 1% I needed for 100% in GTA3.

(The secret seems to be something contrary to the remainder of the game -- PATIENCE. The timer is essentially irrelevant for all but a handful of passengers; it's keeping your ambulance in one piece for thirty trips that's the hard part.)

NOW I'm ready for State of Emergency. Two weeks to go!

Well done vsp!

Although, you do realise that by admitting this, you will have to put up with me asking you to spoonfeed me with how to do the entire game?!

Seriously though, well done. How long did it take you start to finish?

I've had the game since Christmas, and this is my second time through. (The first time I ended up with somewhere around 80%, because I skipped most of the Rampages and other side stuff.) Knowing the missions cold certainly made the second time through much faster, but the extra things really ate up some time.

The hardest parts were:

* Some of the rampages are really nasty. The sniper ones (remove x gang-member heads in y seconds) are nigh-impossible unless you do the unobvious and jump down to ground level to get a closer look at your targets.

* Simply knowing where the rampages, hidden packages, and unique jumps are definitely calls for a FAQ; otherwise, you could spend months looking for them.

* The offroad missions (Patriot Playground, Multi-Storey Mayhem, A Ride in the Park, Gripped!) are brutal. Nothing clears them besides raw repetition, memorization of checkpoint locations and mastering their respective vehicles.

* Finishing the Ambulance missions is next to impossible. The Taxi (get 100 fares, not all at once), Fire Truck (20 fires in each city section) and Vigilante (20 criminals squashed in each city section) side missions are much easier to deal with.

Just getting in different types of vehicles and learning a few driving skills (keeping momentum on your side so police can't open your car door, knowing how far you can push vehicles before they tip over/blow up, knowing the neighborhoods and their assorted shortcuts and hazards) is the key. Usually, I suck at driving games, but this one's about as far from Gran Turismo as you can get; it gives you a lot more room for vehicle abuse, and I use that religiously.

Since, vsp, you are obviously the GTA3 MAN, can you tell me where the fucking Import/Export place is on the Portland Docks? I spent hours looking for that thing last night after I got the page...

Look for the boat next to the giant crane. The pavement should be striped with yellow. That's all I can do, cause it's been a few months since I've played.

The Import/Export place isn't the boat itself, it's actually a garage west of the boat. There should be a list of cars on the garage itself.

If you take all the emergency vehicles in the game to the boat, icons will be available that will allow you to choose from any emergency vehicle whenever you come back there. You'll need the Police Cruiser, the Enforcer, the Firetruck, the Ambulance, the Flatbed (I think), the FBI Car, the Rhino tank and the large military truck. (I may be missing something).

As for me, I'm extremely partial to K-Jah radio.

“You are an old ghoul, you are an old ghoul-ho-ho!”

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Rise FM. It's a hellafide station to listen to when running from the cops. And Chatterbox is funnier than hell. “I'm naked, Laslow! I'm naked!” “Y'know, I really didn't need to know that.”

Although the absolute most awesome thing in the world has to be playing “Renegade” by Styx (the live version) when dodging exploding police cruisers. YEAH!

Ditto that. Renegade is just an awesome song anyway. Oh, and I was talking about the Emergency Vehicles one, not the Import/Export. Yeah, just cruise the docks and look for a building with a garage door and a white sign. The sign is the list of cars you need.

I spent a good several hours yesterday simply walking from place to place in the game, all the while with my arrest meter at exactly two stars. Enough for the cops to really be annoying at times, but not extraordinarily difficult.

Next is three stars. That oughta be fun, with the chopper raining gunfire at me for awhile and the crazy-ass cops trying to run me over.

(from memory, so forgive me if I'm a little off)

Go in the main entrance to the Portland Docks, and go straight past the garages with the overhang (where you took the Securicar in Van Heist). When you get to the open area, hang a left. The building directly in front of you is the Import/Export garage, and the entrance is on the left side from the perspective you're viewing it now.

Alternatively, go in the main entrance and cut to the left, through the little alleyway between the buildings. When you come out, the garage should be on your right with the
door facing you.

(Handy tip: Want to get to Salvatore's Mansion in Saint Mark's without the Mafia hassling you? Go through that alleyway, and you'll see a chain-link fence in the distance at the end of that corridor. Smash it down, drive down the beach, and climb up the rocks or work your way around the other side, and voila -- instant Mafia Sentinels with no threat of being shot at.)

Either way, just look for a big square building with a garage door and a white list on the wall next to it. You won't be able to finish the list until you reach Shoreside Vale anyway (that's when you get the Dodo, and Securicars are scarce until then), so take your time.

The Emergency Crane is not that far away. Take the Import/Export building, and stand on the opposite side of where the door is, and walk/drive straight for the boat in the distance. You should see a striped area on the ground; park an emergency vehicle there and it'll act just like the car crusher from Dead Skunk in the Trunk. (In other words, don't STAY in the vehicle once it's in position.)

Just about all of the GTA3 music is excellent. It still cracks me up that all of the Columbian Cartel vehicles are tuned to the station playing the Scarface soundtrack.

That would be your armor. Think of it as an additional 100 health points. Damage taken will be applied to armor first, with the exception of being inside a car when it blows up (which will always kill you).

The icon you found recharges every so many hours, so grab it again whenever you've taken a beating. It's invaluable for certain missions (like Pump-Action Pimp early on) and for rampages.

Sure, if you want to do it the easy way. LOL...

Which is what I do.

The armor is quite useful against gang members with regular guns, and even somewhat helpful against Mafia guys with their shotguns.

But a military officer with an assault rifle will mess you up in no time, eating right through that damn armor as if it were tin foil. And if you're too close to an explosion, you might die even if you don't have armor. If you're in a car when it explodes, you will die even with armor.

So don't assume just because you have armor that you're safe. Think of it as vsp says, as another 100 life points, but be very careful about getting into full armed confrontations.

Another interesting note. Whenever you enter a Police Enforcer, you'll automatically gain full armor. Very useful.

Sure, it's easier. And lame as hell. The GTA3 cheat codes can be fun when you're just screwing around, but if you want to play seriously, all you need for a cheat-free 100% is persistence.

Not that I'll be playing GTA3 for a while, though, because STATE OF EMERGENCY is _finally_ out. I have it on my desk, and smell a lost weekend to come.
