...they've just listed their choices for the Top 100 Video Games of All-Time. And their list is, well... There's a few head-scratchers - they seem to be limiting themselves to one game per series, but that leads to some horribly glaring ommissions, including damn near every Super Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy game, although sometimes, they'll include a whole series in one entry - i.e. Baldur's Gate or Phantasy Star. They seem to have no problem stocking the list with dozens of boring PC war sims, either. IGN.com is, oddly enough, in the process of doing the exact same thing, and it'll be interesting to compare the two charts side-by-side.

For historical purposes:

Okay, the main thing that catches my eye is the placement of Everquest without any reference at all to Ultima Online, which was the predecessor for MMORPGs (although you could make the argument that Rogue, etc., and a HOST of text-only RPG's that I'm leaving out), when the rest of the list seems slanted towards the predecessors.

That being said, it's kind of hard to read the list, mainly becuse you have to mentally lump in the other games with the titles (i.e., I believe FF6 was better than FF7, but I don't have much of an issue with it, since they can just be viewed in the FF franchise at #12).

Also, Gauntlet deserved so much better. (Heck, I still play that now. )

(Edited because I have issues reading.)

Where's Zork??

How can you have a top 100 list of all time and not include Zork? I wasted a ton of time trying to beat that game. Although there wasn't much to it. (the game itself, not the difficulty) :)

Um, not to sound sexist or anything, but why Ms. Pac-Man and not Pac-Man? What made that a superior game?

Super Star Wars? I remember that game being REALLY hard, but good? Not so sure.

Actually, I'm not really a serious enough gamer to properly comment on all of the rankings, but they do seem way off.

But where the hell is PONG??!!

...and WWF Superstars. ;)

Ms. Pac-Man actually featured different mazes as you progressed through the game, whereas the original only increased the speed of the ghosts to raise the diffuculty.

Golden Axe! King's Quest! X-Com! Monkey Island!

I have a hard time hating these guys after they included some of my favorite games which are on so few "Best of" lists.

Wow, this feels almost dead on to me... well, except for #27: Monkey Island 2 should be replaced with Dragon's Lair, but other then that, I see nothing wrong here. Good list for once.

In fact, I would list this list as #1 for this board. Someone should post a list on 'lists' around here.

Hey! I made the list!

Now, I'm curious. Maybe I missed it, but MYST wasn't on the list? I thought that was the "holy grail of gaming" for the mainstream press for a while there.

And I also think NHL '93 needs to be ranked higher if only because it was immortalized in "Swingers". Of course, maybe that's why it's ranked as high as it is. And Mario is getting JOBBED being down at 8. My top five would have been Zelda (series), Mario Bros. (series), GTA, Madden and Tetris.

It does say "...404 Error: Now What??" in the title bar, but the game works fine for me.

I think eventually everyone came to terms with the fact that Myst was really just pretty crap.

From the article: "NHL 93: Boys play football. Men play hockey. Sure, this sports sim's gameplay was smoother than ice after a zamboni sweep, but it was it's gladiatorial aspect that brought gap-toothed smiles to gamers' faces: most notably, the brutal checks that would turn hapless skaters into bloody hamburgers. The NHL series deserves supporting-actos credits after cameos in Swingers and Beautiful Girls, both of which make light of the game's smackdowns. (Sega Genesis, 1993)

Why do I not remember Zork like this. The lettering is SO much bigger then it used to be on my TRS80 monitor... and for more clearer.

not bad for a list put out for Entertainment Weekly;

Which hockey game did Affleck and Lee play in Chasing Amy?

Blades of Steel or one of the NHl '9x games?

I quickly skimmed the list. Were there ANY of the Infocom games on there, like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Paranoia and so on? I know we mentioned Zork before, but I think I had almost all of the games they made during the late 1980s.

The following post expresses the opinions of a raving Jerichoholic. He is biased, opinionated and bitter. You have been warned.

I don't have a problem with the series concept, if they had kept up with it. Super Mario Brothers (1 and 3) deserve this list, as do Super Mario World and Super Mario Sunshine. Put in the Super Mario series, the Zelda series and the Final Fantasy series if you don't want the top 10 being diferent games in the same series. Super Mario series is 1, Zelda series is 2 and FF series is 3. Nuff said.

As of Monday, April 21 at 12:55 AM, the Boston Red Sox' Magic Number to clinch the AL East is 147. A combination of 147 Red Sox wins and New York Yankees losses will guarantee the AL East for the Boston Red Sox.

I only wish I could still play MULE. I absolutely loved that game.

X-Com at 99 is so wrong. I still play that game on my laptop. In fact, I've got a game going on right now.

And where are the SSI D&D games? Pool of Radiance on the Commodore 128 was a revolutionary experience for me. Oh well.

What about Bubble Bobble? That has to score somewhere on that list.

I'm a Tomb Raider fan, but that game doesn't deserve to be on this list. The cultural impact was big, but the gameplay is only above-average, not #16 good.

Wait...no Final Fantasy Tactics? Fuck this stupid list. Fuck it in its ass.
