I had to read that twice to make sure I wasn't reading an Onion article by mistake. That's the most absurd thing I've ever read...
"So you're Ben Affleck. You're sitting next to Jennifer Lopez, who's your fiancee, you're eating a eight-foot high sundae, and members of the Boston Red Sox are coming up to you and asking for autographs. If that's not heaven, what is?" - Tony Kornheiser, PTI
So some poor kid from California is gonna go to South Dakota one day and think that there's a natural formation that just happens to look like four men that they probably won't recognize anyway.
I think it's time to make California a soveriegn republic and dig a big trench around the border and fill it with monsters so we don't have to deal with them anymore. Or so they don't have to deal with us anymore.
"For example, the new guidelines dictate American Indians should not be depicted with long braids, in rural settings or on reservations."
Yeah! Let's get back to REAL historical depictions of American Indians, riding on the backs of their majestic giant lizards, their mullets blown by the winds from the enormous smokestacks of their massive industrial complexes in the sky!
I knew they grew some pretty good shit in Cali, but when it starts affecting the non-smokers too, I think maybe they need to cut it a little, y'know?

"They that can give up essential liberty to gain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin
I hate this state in many ways, but I can't get myself to leave quite yet. I still have too much family here to up and leave; plus there are obvious geographical advantages to being here than opposed to Nebraska. But many *are* getting fed up with California--I believe I heard a report a couple months ago mentioning how those leaving the state, for one of the first times ever, outnumbered those entering. I think that's only going to continue happening as the state continues to fill up with human and environmental trash, and as a bottled water ends up costing $2.00.
California - What future Americans will use as an example to demonstrate the failures of 60s liberalism
The textbook thing is like PETA - I feel the far-left equivalent of what responsible conservatives have to feel when Klansmen show up and try to give them money.
But the "California fjords" article is largely just ranting from a right-winger with one good point - California's broke. He's right in that this really isn't the time to try and enact vast social legislation, because California's debt structure is unsupported, and since the federal government is nearly as broke as the states are there's no help coming from that quarter.
But on the other hand, a single-payer system is always more efficient than what the United States has, despite what insurance company lobbyists claim, and in the long run it would probably serve California - and the rest of the United States - better than the current system. Railing against the timing is fine - against the idea, silly. (And what's with the Scandanavia bashing? Conservatives have been preaching the downfall of Sweden for two decades and it's never happened.)
World War 2 had a lot more to do with the economy in America rebounding than the New Deal did. Remember, even FDR in a speech to congress said the following: "To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit. It is inimical to the dictates of sound policy. It is in violation of the traditions of America. Work must be found for able bodied but destitute workers. The federal government must and shall quit this business of relief...We must preserve not only the bodies of the unemployed from destitution but also their self-respect, their self-reliance and courage and determination."
The problem with spending in this state goes like this: Grey Davis, the day after he's elected, informs us all that the budget has grown from 20 billion to 35 billion in 2 days. Now, he either lied to us, and should be kicked out of office, or he is just overexxagerating so he is able to raise taxes even higher. Many sources say that the deficit is much lower, including some who claim it is no more than 16 billion.
Here in California, we do everything humanly possible to discourage people from going into business, and to run business into the ground. The unnecessary regulations list would probably number somewhere in the hundreds.
Just yesterday, the legislative body basically passed a bill that legalizes all illegal immigration. O`Reilly ran a segment on it tonight, and thank god, because nobody else touches these issues.
There are certain watchdog organizations that watch where all of the "missing money" goes. Hundreds of millions of tax dollars are used for absolutely ludicrous things, such as faith-based initiatives, and straight to private organizations. This is insanity, and the waste is rampant out here on the left coast. There is a movement to recall Grey Davis out here, and it isn't just a fringe right-wing expirament. It looks like it is going to happen. When we all get a chance to vote in a new governor, I hope the people of California realize that the problem here needs a hatchet applied to it.

That movement has stalled, and I don't think they're going to even get CLOSE to the number of signatures they need.

You made a funny!
Seriously though, all FDR's social programs did was enhance the problem by attempting to put everybody on the dole. The alphabet soup agencies did nothing but put people to work (a noble cause at the time) but remember how ridiculously unconstitutional it all was. The only reason that the Supreme Court eventually allowed some things to pass was that FDR threatened to pack the court.
I just read that in California, the state Senate is considering a bill to ban any corporation convicted of three felonies from doing business in the state: literally, a three-strikes law for corporate criminals. Possible strikes would include the full gamut of corporate crimes -- violations of tax and consumer protection codes, anti-trust, civil rights, or environmental offenses -- you name it. I think that this is a great idea.
" Seeing these wrestling managers walking around with their big guts or their big breasts or their big mouths gave us hop that someday, we too could be part of the show, even if we weren't 6'5" with expletives tattooed on the back of our necks. Plus, anyone getting paid thousands of dollars to stand around in neon suits yelling 'KILL HIM!' towards the ring was certainly a profession to look forward to." http://www.x-entertainment.com/messages/559.html

Good luck. Your boys would get massacred. The Saudi public (and the Arab world at large) would NEVER accept an American invasion of the muslim holy land.
