Hey, it was obviously self-defense. They had threatening banners! They were probably saying some pretty mean stuff, too. Our boys have feelings!

Your right our troops should just sit there and do nothing while they are getting shot at.

If "having rocks thrown at them" is "getting shot at"? No, I'd say not.

Seriously, the military war is over - the war for hearts and minds is ten times more important and always has been, and this is exactly the sort of thing the US doesn't need if it's going to establish a long-standing democracy - or even a friendly dictatorship - in Iraq.

Given that none of us were there, I'm going to give the troops the benefit of the doubt here.

Oh, for Christ's sake, are you out of your mind? If you do that, they're gonna call you names, like "conservative" or "fair-minded" and you'll cry and cry.

I'll give them the benefit of a doubt too, but as long as the military sticks around, it's going to be a tense situation. The U.S. Military makes lousy peacekeepers, which is really a good thing, because militaries aren't for keeping peace, they are for fighting wars. (well good, as long as they aren't used for peacekeeping)

See, the reason I didn't post anything the first time this happened, last week in Masul, is because the Pentagon said "no, we didn't shoot any protesters", and I gave them the benefit of the doubt. And then a week later they changed their minds and said "okay, maybe we shot some protesters, but not that many."

So I'm not nearly so willing to extend it now.

Just like when you/we gave them the benefit of the doubt for finding weapons of mass destruction, yet they only found a container of Vicks vaporub, at least it was in the jumbo container.

I trust this administration as far as I could throw them. Which is substantially less then an Iraqi can throw his shoe which of course is enough threat to open fire at them.

Ahh remember the days when the American media said everyone in Iraq was all lovey dovey that America is there. That soured quicker then most of my dates.

These were American troops getting attacked that fought back. Sure rocks may not be dangerous Godking, but read the report again, they also threw bricks. BRICKS! If you got nailed with a brick in the head, you would die. Also, who knows what other weapons were pulled?

Ever heard of this great new invention? It's called a helmet. I'm pretty sure the military has got a few of them already.

Yeah its pretty unlikely that well trained troops from a civilised western country would open fire on innocent civilians.

Or to bring it closer to home, do the words "My Lai" ring any bells?

lol, good one. I was about to say something about how could anyone have the audacity to compare a massacre to our guys defending themselves when I realized that this is an obvious troll to get some America loving Patriots all riled up. You almost got me.

1. We know that the troops in Iraq were defending themselves how? Because one of them said someone in the crowd opened fire? I refer you back to my original post.

2. I believe the reason that vsp was drawing the comparison was as evidence that troops in tense situations can do some fucked up things, and to simply 'give them the benefit of the doubt' after 15 people have been killed in 2 days just ain't right.

How about this point, then: My Lai (where Americans with guns shot lots of Vietnamese without them) happened in March of 1968.

How long did it take for the cover-up to unravel, and for the American public to learn the truth? Over a year.

Pardon me if I'm not quite ready to read a US soldier's initial account of what happened and take it at face value, given that conflicting accounts also exist.

Doh, you did get me there Moe.... well I suppose it could hit them in the face or something, but you are totally right. I guess I should find out about these "helmets"...

I think the point is that if someone decides to throw rocks (or bricks) at you, you are allowed to shoot them... I may not believe in the whole armed services thing but if I'm allowed to do this, then sign my ass up.

EDIT: Sign and sing are two completely different words all together.

I still dont see what the hell the big deal is with being able to vote (& etc) in other languages. Is it REALLY hurting anyone/anything to have government documents translated into different languages? Really. I still dont get that argument.
