Lady Miss Kier files a lawsuit against Sega over the likeness of its Ulala character.
According to Rolling Stone, Deee-lite's Lady Miss Kier (Kierin Kirby) has filed a lawsuit against Sega due to similarities between the Space Channel 5 character Ulala and the singer. The lawsuit alleges that many of Ulala's characteristics (ranging from her makeup and knee-high boots to her miniskirts and "cute" backpacks) are similar to those of Lady Miss Kier, resulting in misappropriation of likeness, unfair competition, unjust enrichment, and more. The lawsuit also states that audiences will most likely be confused, if they haven't been so already, as a result of the similarities between the two.
ok...did anyone here play the game, and if you did, did you actually think "Hey, that Deee-lite chick has her own game!"?
i never played the game, but i'm looking for screen shots to see what they're talking about...
"Grabbin your butt? That's not very lady-like." "I'm not a lady." "Oh. Whatever."
I'm wondering why this is just happening now. Space Channel 5 came out like 4 years ago, right? And Dee-Lite hasn't even put out new album since 1996! What the hell is wrong with people?
I think the main problem is that Sega had contacted Lady Miss Kier about using her likeness, and she turned them down. So they made up a knock off, and she's claiming that the knock off isn't off enough. Not that I see enough similarities in those two pictures, but I guess the judge will decide that.
I apologize for apologizing for being a Buffy/Angel mark.
Hiring a computer engineer? Its okay. No one else is either...

Obviously, The Groove is no longer in her heart...
See, there's nothing wrong with Lady Miss Kier, but if they'd based the main character around BOOTSY~! instead, even I would've bought it.
"You may be wondering why I have been making so many references lately to Fox News. The reason is that it is now my cable news network of choice -- because if I’m going to watch the news and be lied to, I want it to be ridiculously obvious that I am being lied to." -- Center for an Informed America, Newsletter #34

She's probably just coming out of a K-hole now.
That said, the whole "World Clique" album holds up, unlike most other stuff from that era.
So I own both the first game and the Japanese sequel from last year, and never once did I think Deee-lite chick. Even thinking about it now I still don't really see it. Yeah sure, they both sport the retro platforms, but a lot of the characters and the game as a whole have a retro 60's/futuristic look/theme. Next thing you know Hanna-Barbera's gonna sue them too for similarities to The Jetsons.
What about the old wrestling games without licences that always had a blond, mustachioed muscle man and a giant with a brown singlet? Could Hogan, Andre's family and the WWE sue? And what about unlicenced sports games, like soccer games with D.Brackem and Rolando as players?
...full of energy. Multi-orgasmic, if you will, in a cosmic sort of way."
Actually when I first saw the name of this thread the first thing I thought of was Space Channel 5, if only because the character has "that look" and not because she looks like the Lady Miss Kier.
Also, note the character name is "Ulala," which could be construed as stolen from (or "inspired by") the "Oooooh la la, la la-la-la-la la" line from "Groove Is in the Heart."
That same character (or another one Sega created that looked exactly like her) was going to be an animated news reader for a pilot that MTV News was working on around the same time. I remember thinking then that they were about 8 years too late with that idea ...
The only thing I enjoy more than doing the crossword puzzle is actually finishing it.

Are you serious?
(Actually although that line was in the VIDEO, that line is actually a vocal from "What Is Love?")
