Well, this is some thought I had since I started watching Wrestling in the early 90ies, and while I got used to WWE and WCW style (did never get to see anything else), I didn't care that much anymore about it, but now it comes to my mind over and over again.
Why are heels always whiny bitchy cheating jerks? When I imagine a monster heel, I think of someone being so strong and powerfull that he destroys everything in his sight, and not getting himself counted out, using foreign objects or the help of a ringside buddy. A heel should be intimidating, and getting clean wins more often, so if he actually loses the title, it means something. But usually heels don't do this. Now you will argue that this cheating and fluke wins make them heels. Well, I don't think this is necessary. Just look at the Angle - Benoit match from RR this year. Angle won completely clean, which made him look incredibly strong, but Benoit as well, since he gave all he had and more to avoid the loss. This is the way heels should look like. The worst example was my first experience with what bothers me so much about it. Between 1997 and 1999 I had no chance of watching wrestling, and I did not hear about anything going on. Then I watched KotR 99, and there was the title match between Undertaker and Rock. Okay, the image I had in mind from the Undertaker was the dead man without fear, never backing down from anything, simply the man! And what I saw in the Rock match was the whiniest pussy I ever witnessed. First I couldn't believe it, I thought they dug out the fake Undertaker from Summerslam 94. But then I realized that it happened with anybody, whether it's HHH, Austin, Jericho, whoever, as soon as they turn heel, they turn weak. So why is this? Please give me strong heels, then wrestling works much better for me. I can not watch Austin beating up 5 guys at once, and a few weeks later being scared of Spike Dudley!
heels are supposed to cheat, it makes them dastardly and its the way of nature, lol, but i see your point about the monster heel thing i guess i view them differently i always got more from a match when the face outsmarted the heels tactics or used the heels "weapon/item" against them. ie hogan using undertakers ashes againts him

The problem with monster heels is that the fans generally fall in love with the wrestler, and the promoter thinks they have to turn him face. The last monster heel I can remember who was able to stay a heel was Vader in WCW in the mid 90's.
There is only one man left to save Vince McMahon and the WWF/E. One man who will provide weekly Hogan/Andre Main Event ratings for RAW. Baghdad Bob is your salvation Vince. www.welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com
