Apparently people run out on Baseball fields and attack people because Steve Austin does commercials on ESPN:

The article does make a point. It's important for parents to teach their children the difference between real life and fantasy. Now if only Mushnick's parents had done so...

The sad thing is for every one good point he makes, he maes five stupid ones. He needs to realize sportsmanship is dead in sports, and that it is hardly McMahon's fault.

What also struck me about this article was Mushnick noting that Dan Patrick "has also lent himself to Coors beer ads", as if he's looking down on him for doing so.

Noooo! Not BEER ADS!!! Not a FOLDING CHAIR!!! Nooo!!!

I feel like this was more of a way to bury Dan Patrick than Steve Austin, but it's still idiotic anyway.

I think Mushnick is right in a twisted sort of way.

Bah, he's right this time. For all the bellyaching round her about how bad things are now, at its peak the fed was pumping out some seriously degrading and morally vacant stuff. And he was against that, and I can respect him for it. When he mentions how wrestlers drop dead in their 30's and 40's and no one looks into it, I can't just say "ooh that dirty rat, he's using the deaths of wrestlers to put himself over!" He doesn't even know what put himself over means, and he's 100% right on that point. The business kicks dirt over the corpses and shivers at the thought of anyone giving a real hard look at what a fucking circus this is and how somehow it needs to be regulated.

Is he overbearing, self-satisfied, condscending and arrogant? Yes. But people who are social commentators as he clearly is are usually just those things. If you're going to take the mantle of one whose place it is to comment on right and wrong; as politicians, celebrities, and members of the media often have, you're not going to have self-esteem issues.

As for the moral depravity of wrestling, he's right about that too. I always hated dX with a passion. Grown men pointing at their crotches? Their "hilarious" (racist) NOD skit? Triple H going around NY and mocking Indian accents, telling a man with a turban he'll pull his turban to "get his motor running". Only a retard could be entertained by these things. I was never a fan of Austin chugging beer and attacking needlessly. It was trash. Austin was supposed to be the "everyman" and that always depressed me because he was a ill-bred moron who attacked everyone for the sake of attacking everyone and drank and drove trucks and acted like a fuckin' moron. If Mushnik wants to look at that and say, heck, maybe we shouldn't let kids watch it, then fine. I agree with his thesis if nothing else.

The catfight girls at wrestlemania are another example. I am not being saracastic when I say porn makes more sense that that. Let's settle this in bed? Huh? What the fuck does that even mean?

Now ESPN is doing commercials with a wife-beater. I can see why Austin's crimes have no connection to a WWE return, but what on earth does ESPN have to gain from this? Austin's not even a big star anymore. I doubt anyone is sitting at home and is only just now considering turning on that ESPN somethingorother they've heard about simply because they saw Austin in a commercial. It's pointless and it hurts ESPN more than it helps them, and that was, underneath all his vitriol, his point and it's a good one.

Mushnick is far from an idiot. A moralistic crusader living in candy land, possibly, but not an idiot. He's trying to blame the events at that baseball game on the media, and uses metal detectors in schools to solidify his position, which really is a genius move on his part. "We didn't have them when *we* went to school." Mushnick is right, in that the media can indeed warp people especially children...when it goes unchecked. Wrestling included, use myself for proof. True Story in 1993 I was in 7th grade, got suspended for throwing salt at someone, 1994 8th grade got suspended for putting someone in a crossface chicken wing damn near killing them (after he pulled my pants down!) All things that I saw off of wrestling!

What Muschnick don't realize that isn't the 50's. Mom isn't home cooking dinner, making sure her boys are allright! This is a world in which parents expect TV to be baby-sitters. They really have no choice, you got 3 SUV's in the driveway, people thousands of dollars in debt, women got to try and outdo men, 50 percent of marriages end in divorce...whose got the time? Kids are forced to grow up to fast, and TV is quickly taking the place or the parent. So Phil should be looking more to society on the whole, instead of just blaming the money hungry media, who are a large part of the problem but is only as lethal when mixed with a variety of other problems.

Mushnick isn't saying, don't let your kids watch this. He's saying it shouldn't be on the air. Whenever something goes wrong, everyone tries to place the blame somewhere else. My kid swore, it's TV's fault! My kid did this, EMINEM! MARILYN MANSON! WWE!

They're so quick to point the blame anywhere but at themselves.

Steve Austin does a 30 second commercial on ESPN and all of a sudden, it's the cause for everything that's wrong in the world.

It seems to me that Mushnick wishes things would be like they were when he grew up. When women knew their place. When whites didn't have to interact with blacks. When it was OK to beat your kids. When Hollywood produced role models like Frank Sinatra.

It's not the media's job to parent children. The TV is a box, it can be unplugged, it can be removed. If all TV showed was all Touched By An Angel all the time, if all the radio played was Celine Dion, irresponsible parents would still find something to blame their problems on.

Uhh...doesn't matter if he knows what the terminology means or not. Call it whatever you want. Mushnick constantly uses wrestling and McMahon to make stupid points and to provide bad analysis. He used to do it to draw attention and raise eyebrows. That's getting himself over. Now he does it out of spite. Is that any better? No.

and he's 100% right on that point. The business kicks dirt over the corpses and shivers at the thought of anyone giving a real hard look at what a fucking circus this is and how somehow it needs to be regulated.

In your mind maybe. Maybe in his. Maybe in alot of peoples. But, why single out wrestling? Why not talk about regulating boxing, or Ultimate Fighting, or anything else. I think that Mushnick constantly harps on it, even though he obviously hates it, and even when he makes a good point, he's obviously clueless as to what it means.

Just because he's a "social commentator" doesn't give him the right to be an asshole. It just doesn't. It does hold him to a higher standard of research and opinion, a standard which he rarely comes close to reaching.

As for the moral depravity of wrestling, he's right about that too. I always hated dX with a passion. Grown men pointing at their crotches? Their "hilarious" (racist) NOD skit? And the WWE never forced children to watch, nor did they make any bones about the fact that they were "adult" entertainment. And if you weren't entertained by the segments, fine, other than Austin and the Nation skit and Austin, neither was I, but arguing against the WWE's right to air those segments is getting into an arguement about free speech and such. Were they ill advised? Yeah. Any more ill advised than alot of things on TV? No. Does that make it right? No. Does that give the WWE a little more leeway to make mistakes like that? It should.

The catfight girls at wrestlemania are another example. I am not being saracastic when I say porn makes more sense that that. Let's settle this in bed? Huh? What the fuck does that even mean?

It means that they were given a script and told to say that. You want Shakespeare? Look somewhere else. A wrestling show is about as well written as an episode of Saturday Night Live. Really bad in some parts, pretty good in others, and all depending on the performance of the characters to get a segment over. And every single issue is settled fake fighting of some sort, so it's not like the level of realism is expected to be really high.

Now ESPN is doing commercials with a wife-beater. I can see why Austin's crimes have no connection to a WWE return, but what on earth does ESPN have to gain from this? No it isn't. Austin still has his fans, and his presence wasn't even the point of the commercial. I mean, ESPN's commercials have featured mascots stealing cars. Does that mean they're promoting grand theft auto? No. The commercial was meant to be cute and funny, ESPN is known for its cute and funny commercials, and this was one. Austin is a wrestler, a well known one, so why not feature him in a cute little commercial? Because of his private history? So then ESPN probably shouldn't feature any atheletes in their commercials, huh? WWE shouldn't give the title to Booker T! He's a thief! Of course, Mushnick needs to be socially relevent. He NEEDS you to hear him. And he's unnecessarily assholish on a topic that he fails to make even a passable arguement about between his screaming for attention.

Funny part about Mushnick's article was his talking about how ESPN is promoting wrestling, when wrestling isn't even a sport. Um, Phil, last time I looked, you wrote in the sports pages of the New York Post. Now, why would someone who writes on sports continually write columns; in the sports section, on something that is not a sport?
And, I'm still waiting for Phil to claim its Professional Wrestling that led to the rise of international terrorism in the past 2 decades.
