Two factors that make this less than important is the fact that this comes during the middle of the war and it is still way too early to mean to much. But the fact that W is ahead in Cali is singificant none the less:

Poll Shows Bush Ahead in California '04 Vote
Wed April 16, 2003 09:02 AM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - President Bush, trounced in California during the 2000 election, would win the country's most populous state if the next vote were held today, according to a poll released on Wednesday.
A Field poll of 695 registered voters found that 45 percent of Californians would support Bush, with 40 percent backing the Democratic party nominee.

In his historically narrow win nationally in 2000, Bush attracted 41.6 percent of the vote in California, compared to 53.4 for former Vice President Al Gore. Bush's present support was lowest in the San Francisco area, home to the country's strongest anti-Iraq war movement.

Among California's Democratic voters, the poll completed between April 1-6 found that 22 percent preferred Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman, followed by 16 percent for Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

The poll had a margin of error of 3.8 percent for the overall sample and 5.8 percent for findings on the Democratic candidates.

I think for a lot of Californians it will end up being the kind of thing that sounds good in theory, but when they actually hit the voting booth they will not be able to push the GOP button. That said, if the Dems current candidate crop stays as uninspired looking as they currently are, CA might be the only state Bush loses this time around, and that doesn't make me happy to think about.

Right now, I'd give Bush more of an edge in California than he would have in New York. If Bush somehow won either of these states, it would be an electoral romp the likes of Nixon in '72 or Reagan in '84.

I think California has a real bitterness towards Democrats right now with the budget mess and all of the proposed tax hikes- which could translate into a Bush win in this state. This is not to say that the whole State is going to turn Republican, but I think California is primed for a "voter temper tantrum." This election cycle, anyway...

This is very true. There doesn't seem to be any "for" to this other than for Shrum. Everybody mentioned pretty much gets a mudball to the eye.
