Okay...I've heard rumors here and there about Square re-releasing Final Fantasy VII on PS2 with sharper graphics and some new CGI Cinemas. The really good part...fixing all the plotholes so you can get Aerith back later on in the game (without Gameshark codes). Am I the only one who's heard anything about this? I think it's completely possible given the re-releases of I, II, V, and VI.

I'm guessing that since they are releasing a direct sequel for the first time with X-2, a lot of rumors have been floating around about rereleases and other direct sequels.

Nothing has been confirmed by Square, as far as I know.

As far as I know, the plan would be to release a continuation to the story (which would take some fancy writing work by Square to erase that ending). However, it probably wouldn't come any time soon, as the programmers who aren't busy trying to bring FF-XI here either just got off of working on FF X-2, or are going to be a part of the team for the new as yet untiled Square/Enix RPG, or are working on FF-XII.

Given FF-XVII's popularity, I wouldn't be surprised to see something more in the future, but so far any rumors, as far as I know, are just based off of interviews where the top guys on FF X-2 said "Well, it'd be neat if we could do a FF VII-2

I'd like to see more though. That's always been one of my pet peeves about RPGs, is at any point in the game, you have no problems ressurecting characters (i.e. a Phoenix Down or a Restore Spell), but dammit, if the game wants a character to die or be injured, they WILL.

FFVII is probably my favorite RPG of all time. Of course, I am completely biased since it was the first post-Super Nintendo game I ever played (WOW, 3D GRAPHICS!!!). My big problem was all the Aeris plot holes (going back to the Midgard church after her death and seeing her ghost, the Sephiroth clone in the pipe at the beginning) that made it seem you could get her back later on. It just gave the appearance of not being finished and rushed for release.

FF7 was a pile of dung that ushered in the era of the crappy FF games (7-9). The series only got redeemed with 10. The FF on Playstation experiment was a complete and utter dud.

The prospect of this really doesn't excite me at all. I'd much rather see Square(or whatever they're called now that they've fused with Enix) spend their time and resources on something like Front Mission 4, another Final Fantasy Tactics game, Vagrant Story 2, a better Mana sequel, something that would be a little more different than rehashing their previous successes in an attempt to make money. I realize that it could be good, afterall X-2 looks like a fun diversion, but there's just no point to it. VII is fine as it is. I always liked that all of the Final Fantasies were self contained stories, it seems to me that they're diminishing that idea by creating sequels.

My biggest problem with VII and X is that, ultimately, the ending is unsatisfying. Especially with VII.

You spend a highly enjoyable ride getting from the beggining to the end, only to (spoilers for those who haven't beaten them):

VII) Get one of the major characters killed off and then the world obliterated. Gee, rosey. What difference did Cloud really make?

X) Die, leaving your girlfriend to try to bring the world back together without the man she loves. Sure, you saved the world, and sure it's kind of noble to play the martyr, but that leaves you really empty feeling.

I don't know why the stories NEED to be tragic, and in fact, I think that they SHOULDN'T be. In that case, if the sequals endevour to fix that, then I have no problem with it.

...but at the end of the credits, you see a CGI of Tidus waking up in the ocean and swimming to the top. THAT'S what pissed me off with FFX...I wanted the sad, tragic ending DAMMIT!

VII was, for me anyway, one of the best buildups with one of the worst endings in videogamedom, edging out Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's ending by a slim margin. If I remember correctly (it's been 3 years since I beat it last) you have no clue what the hell is going on, with meteor about to destroy the world, only to have Aeris's theme kick in and have "mana energy" repel it. Then Red XIII and Reds XIV and XV are on the hilltop over looking a jungle vine infested Midgard. Whaaaaaa?

I guess this is more of a matter of interpretation than anything else. I found the endings of VII and especially X to be satisfying because they fit within the stories they were trying to tell. It'd essentially be a copout for Tidus or Aeris to come back all fine and dandy, because it would invalidate the effect of the characters' stories. Aeris getting impaled was a really powerful and dramatic moment that helped build the story. Of course, that's just going on what I remember from VII, so I could be totally wrong.

You say the stories don't NEED to be tragic, but why do they NEED to be happy? If a happy ending compromises the story, is it really better than the more appropriate, yet somewhat tragic ending?

Getting back to my original point, I think it'd be better for Square to focus on new projects than to rewrite their own history.

As far as Aeris dying without the ability to be revived with a phoenix down, yes that's dumb but I think the distinction is that when you "die" in battle you are knocked unconscious and can be rescuscitated given the right medicine (Pheonix Down, life spell). When Aeris is stabbed she is flat out killed before anyone can do anything. I guess the problem stems from the rpg interpretation of "dying".

Continuing with the SPOILERS

Yes Tidus swims out of the ocean at the end of the credits, but its never clear where he is or what that means. It seemed to me that it meant that he was still alive in Zanarkand as opposed to the dream of Zanarkand ending when the ancients woke up. Yuna was still left without him in the "real world".

I apologize for being a Buffy/Angel mark.

Not only is this extremely common in modern RPGs, FFVII was certainly not the first FF to snuff a prominent character beyond hope of restoration. What of General Leo in FF6, Galuf in FF5, or (at least for a large portion of the plot) Palom and Porom in FF4?

Consider the Phoenix Down to be the gaming equivalent of smelling salts or the shock-paddles that EMTs use (Clear!) The paddles won't do much if half the victim's chest has been obliterated.

As for the ending... I'm far from a Square fanboy (I haven't even played FF8, 9 or 10, though I have Kingdom Hearts sitting around for a rainy day), but I think that I "got" the ending fairly quickly.

Sephiroth wanted to grievously wound the planet with Meteor so that he could absorb its Lifestream and become godlike. Aeris knew that Holy was needed to counter Meteor, so she allowed Sephiroth to strike her down, caused her spirit to become one with the planet, and brought forth Holy at the game's climax (something that a living Aeris presumably couldn't have done). The team whacked Sephiroth, breaking his hold on Meteor, allowing Holy to defeat it, thereby preventing a disaster of biblical proportions (see, Cloud & Co. DID do something right).

As time passes -- as in, 500 years -- the planet's natural state reasserts itself. Midgar (the home of Shinra's reactors, which sucked Mako/Lifestream from the planet, and thus arguably a "wound" to the planet) becomes defunct and overgrown. As for our heroes? The threat had been defeated, so "they lived happily ever after" isn't a bad fate to imagine. None of them would be around 500 years later, except for (obviously) Red XIII, who bears witness to the effects of their triumph.

That's not so convoluted, is it? They don't come right out and explicitly explain it all in fifteen-foot-high letters of fire, but sometimes more abstract endings are the best.

Bah. The Final Fantasy series peaked at VI. The Opera House still stands today as the watershed moment in any video game for me. The music is wonderful, and it's such a great scene. I wish somehow this was the one they were redoing for us.

VII was good, but the end was a letdown. VIII sucked, but the ending made it all worthwhile. VIII had the greatest ending of them all, bar none. IX was fun and had a decent ending, which I think made it the best out of the PS trilogy. X was freaking great, and the ending made my brother cry. Great game.

Besides, we all know that Final Fantasy isn't what Square does best...it's the Chrono games.

The following post expresses the opinions of a raving Jerichoholic. He is biased, opinionated and bitter. You have been warned.

Final Fantasy 7 is my favorite game of all time, bar none. Then again, I really didn't care when Aeris died because she was almost too good. There was nothing bad about her. She wasn't a no-good vigilante doing things for money. She wasn't an angry black man who would do anything for revenge. She was just...good. She just wanted something good to happen. There's no fun in that!

The idea of a revamped (and one disc) FF7 with kick ass graphics and more FMV's sounds great, though.

SPOILERS - (although it'll all be in FFX-2 anyways)

As some of you may know, FFX International was released in Japan, which had some extra storyline footage. Most notably is a new 15-minute ending sequence. In it, Rikku shows Yuna a sphere that Kilmari found. It shows Tidus locked in a cage for using machina. So of course, Yuna and Rikku slip out of Besaid Island, leading to FFX-2. I got the movie of it off of Kazaa a while back. The file was called Final Fantasy X - Another Story.avi. You might be able to find it and a better synopsis somewhere else online though.

you know, I don't know. What I DO know is that SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER the scene where Laguna walks up to the tombstone in the ending and smiles sadly at it is one of the most emotional video games scenes ever.
