I've searched and found threads for best and worst live show, but not one for the best live album. My pick is "Live at the Middle East" by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Just due to the energy and fan interaction they have.

I'm inclined to say Stop Making Sense, by the Talking Heads.

I'm a big fan of Peter Gabriel's Secret World Live. Might not be the best live album ever, but it's pretty good.

Bob Marley's "Babylon By Bus" is my # 1 with his "Live" album that included the classic version of "No Woman No Cry" a close # 2 - Little Feat's "Waiting for Columbus" (Dixie Chicken, Spanish Moon, Don't Bogart that Joint) gets the # 3 spot

Dire Straits Alchemy Live is brilliant.

Cheap Trick Live at Budokan deserves mention, as does Kiss Alive.

But my favorite would have to be Live Rust from Neil Young.

It's a bit too new to call the best of all time, but I'm really into "Ben Folds Live".

"It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for the winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. And also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?"

I like some of the suggestions, especially Alchemy Live by Dire Straits and Live at Budokan by Cheap Trick.

Two others that I love are...

Love You Live - The Rolling Stones (1977)
and
Live Alive - Stevie Ray Vaughan (1986)

Some very good selections in this thread. Special mention to the Peter Gabriel albumas that is just stellar stuff and has Paula Cole before she became a parody.

My add to the list would be the live disc off of "To Venus and Back" by Tori Amos, but then that's kind of to be expected by anyone who knows me Also the live disc with "Almost Happy" by K's Choice is fun.

I know it only came out a couple years ago, but for me it's Rush's Different Stages.

Honorable mention to Alchemy Live and Deep Purple's Made in Japan.

The Guru speaks the truth. Live "albums" begin and end with Frampton. To truly appreciate it, you had to be in high school when it came out. It was so different than every "popular" album released around that time. Yeah, I know most of you weren't even born when this was released, but it is the correct answer to the thread title question.

I'd argue that Frampton is the most over-rated live album of all time, but I may not be the best person to do that since my top three would be, in no particular order, Queensryche "Operation Livecrime", DC Talk "Welcome to the Freakshow", and The Police "Live".
