Personally, I would rather see the experiences of black veterans within the context of a WWI & II exhibit rather than standing alone in an African American museum. It's more educational and better highlights their contribution.

("It's more educational"? What the hell does that mean?)

Actually, it does precisely the opposite. If you want to highlight the contribution of black veterans, putting them as part of a larger whole will only serve to obscure them further. That's the point of a black history museum - it's going in-depth to tell certain stories in greater detail.

Again, we'd be able to see the contributions of all Americans (white, black , hispanic, Asian, etc.) side by side rather than getting an incomplete picture from a bunch of ethnically exclusive museums.

If the sum of American culture arises from races A, B, C and D, and you have museums devoted individually to A, B, C and D, how is that "incomplete"? You've covered all points of the map.

America also seems to be the only place in the world were people will support the use of taxpayer dollars to segregate history by races. And it disgusts me think that people continue such useless and pointless segregation.

That's because, up until the Sixties, American history was segregated by race, completely and utterly. The black experience in America until that point was entirely separate and distinct from the white experience. Suggesting otherwise would be bullshit of the highest order. There's no shame in telling plain truth.

Actually Grimis most first world nations that have multiple ethnic groups will highlight the histories of these nations somehow. Especially when those groups have been systematically abused for the vast majority of their shared history. I do wonder though why it's always the conservatives, the people who generally are most opposed to ever mentioning racism who suddenly are so appalled by "segregation". Perhaps some fear that if we look critically at our past we might also look critically at our present, and be able to see how they are more closely related than we would like?

Anyone who won't look critically at their society wants to be ignorant. Speaking as an individual who leans to the right, I do look critically at the past and the present, and one conclusion I've drawn is that if we continue to define history predominantly as "black" or "white" or "hispanic" rather than "American" (ie, seeing major parts of our history as something "they" did or "we" did rather than as a common heritage), we are working against the goal of eliminating racism.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. I don't understand why highlighting the contributions of black veterans (or whichever group) obscures them further. Why not just go in-depth so that everyone can see the contributions in context with the times and the ultimate goals of the country. This also would provide the opportunity to emphasize the contributions made in spite of the prevailing environment.

The short answer is that if I only go to a museum devoted to a particular race (or 2 or 3 particular races), then I don't get a very comprehensive view of what was going on at that time. However, if I go to a museum that highlights the contributions of races A, B, C and D within the context of those times, then I do get a complete picture of the contributions of all Americans.

This argument is starting to go in circles. I prefer to see the contributions of each person or group within the context of their times and of overall history, while other people prefer to see the contributions of a group within the context of the history of that specific group. I think it's a matter of personal preference. I would prefer my tax dollars be used to fund museums the way I would design them. But, as Moe pointed out, there are far worse uses of taxpayer funds. Until I start using my own money and time to actually be a catalyst for change in this issue, my opinion is little more than hot air or empty keystrokes.

I have a bit of Cherokee in by family tree and I took a trip to the museum in Cherokee, NC. What I found was a quite exhaustive chronicle of the tribe's past that I more than likely wouldn't ever see in a "general history" museum. I have a tough time thinking that an "all-inclusive" facility would care about the Cherokee newspapers, for instance...

What I am getting to, is that "specialty" museums may have a better chance at in depth coverage of the distinct and different histories of American cultures. Lumping in Cherokee history with, say, Sioux is ridiculous and insulting to both cultures...

Why do I have to keep repeating myself? I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THIS. My problem is SPENDING TAXPAYERS DOLLARS ON THIS

I do wonder why all liberals accuse all conservatives of racism.

It's our responce to all conservatives accusing all liberals of hating America.

This is intriguing. I read about a similar study in Newsweek a year or two ago regarding religion/spirituality and the brain. They did similar testing on nuns, monks, priests, etc as they prayed/meditated. Amazing results.
