Living in canada, I never got any ecw as i was growing up, until they got onto TNN, so maybe someone can clue me in to why people keep calling Maven the Mikey Whipwreck of 2001-2002??

I haven't seen all of it myself but Mikey never got any offensive move in. Not even a drop kick. And yet he would end up with the win. That lasted for quite a time I believe. In fact, wasn't he even a champ already during that time?

Mikey went MONTHS without ever getting in a single offensive move. He'd never win a match. One night he was given a match for the ECW TV Title - and won on a fluke. He did everything to try to get rid of the belt, crying in interviews, attempting to give it back. Then he'd go out and win on a fluke. One night, Cactus Jack got a tag-team title match, and pulled out Mikey (who was kicking and screaming the whole way) as his partner. They won the titles. Finally, Mikey grabbed the World Title and became the first triple threat champion in ECW history.
He even got a win over Steve Austin, which is mentioned REPEATEDLY when the announcers talk about Mikey.
Eventually he left for WCW, and came back as a possessed Mikey. Possessed Mikey got in lots of offensive moves!
For some reason I have a hard time seeing Maven in THAT role.
Let us flash back to 1994, back when the "E" in ECW stood for Eastern...
Mikey Whipwreck was among the lowliest of the jobbers in ECW -- he existed merely to take bumps in an acrobatic fashion and stare up at the ceiling lights nightly. He had very little in his arsenal that even resembled an offensive move.
For various reasons, he was given a shot at the ECW TV title then held by Pitbull #1. Naturally, the Pitbull wiped the floor with him, but some timely interference (by Cactus Jack, if I remember correctly) led to Mikey collapsing onto the fallen Pitbull and winning the belt.
Mikey went on to win a short string of matches where he'd be annihilated by his opponent, but win by DQ (due to outside shenanigans) and keep the belt. He lost the belt three months later to Jason Knight, but was drafted two weeks later by Cactus to be his semi-unwilling partner against Public Enemy, and ended up pinning Rocco Rock to win THOSE belts. And then the ECW World Heavyweight belt a year later.
Basically, Mikey was the ultimate underdog -- take today's Spike Dudley and feed him a few sandwiches. (Some say Mikey had a few too many sandwiches later in his career, but I digress.) He was undersized, undernourished and looked like somebody plucked him randomly out of the crowd to wrestle, but people loved cheering for him anyway. Sound familiar?

As successful as anything else was in 1994 ECW, at least. It was memorable that it's still talked about today, which is more than you can say for the average wrestling angle...

I believe, if he so chooses, Maven could grow hair on his head.
Getting back to the origianl point, the fact that it's being brought up 4-5 years after it happened marks it as a creative success...
In the same vein of that story, I was thinking - now that Maven's champion, you think the 24/7 rule will start being used again? Implementing the rule itself wouldn't be a problem; they've got the standard "Undertaker/Big Show/Steve Blackman was so scary, no one wanted to jump him" excuse.
It'd fit - instead of going the Crash route where he he tried to escape from challenges (and managed to sneak pins in), I could see Maven getting beat up by everyone but have a fluke happen to hold on to the title, just like Mikey. Except it'd be more frequent and backstage.
