...after having done it, everything works perfectly. Games load quickly again and the drive itself isn't near as loud as it had been. My PS2 is running just like it did back when it was brand new. (Notes: I skipped the alcohol/canned air and just used a dry Q-tip to clean the lens... which also seems to be very fragile.)
A few words of warning:
-This obviously will void your warranty. Removing the sticker seal from the back left side of the machine makes the sticker read "VOID" all over, just to make sure you understand.
-The fragile cable as mentioned in step 7 of the process seems to be very flimsy as warned... be careful when removing the top of your PS2, because this cable has to stay attached to both parts- don't just rip off the lid. I believe it operates the eject function of the drive and is expensive to replace- I think I heard 35 USD somewhere.
So yeah, if you give this a shot, just be careful. I'm certainly no mechanical wizard or anything, so I'm sure most anyone can do this as long as you take care and have a somewhat steady hand.

Last summer a neighbor of mines had me house sit for her. She had a PS2 which wasnt work for some unknown reason.(Unknown reason being her boyfriend played a lot of madden, but dont tell her.) I take a look at this think and decide i can fix it. Riiiiight. So i call her and ask her if this is okay. She says yes and that i can keep it if i do fix it. Of course thats not an issue cuz i aready gots a PS2.
So i get to work. Pulled the whole thing apart. Let me just say before going on that i am a certified electronics technician . Certified not meaning that i know what im doing just that i got a paper that says i do. I SUMMON THE VAST POWERS OF CERTIFICATION!!! And well not much happened. So i decide to put the PS2 back together. Which i do with a few screws left over. And well...... It worked! I fixed the PS2. I called her and told her about this. Bitch decides she still wants it! Needless to say one ripped cable wire later the PS2 was junk again. Bitch.

I upgraded my PS3 HD to a 1TB drive at Christmas (thanks to my wife, who's the best in the world) and I found the entire upgrading process to be relatively painless. 1TB drives should be the bare minimum on these kinds of systems.
