I have a collection of about 5,000 comics i am trying to get rid of. But first i need some kind of catologing system to figure out what i have and it's possible worth. Does anyone know of any good comic book collecting software or programs or anything to help me?

Go to your local comic book store, slap down some coin and buy yourself the latest issue of Wizard. The price guide in the back is probably the best indicator of what's worth anything. Any online program would probably cost more money than it's worth. I have yet to find a good free one.

Although, the Wizard guide is not exactly comprehensive. For one thing, you won't see too much about a series that isn't being produced anymore. Try going into a comic book store and asking about CGC ratings. I'm not sure if it would cost you to get your stuff appraised by them, but people who go through them can get more money for their comics than people who don't (or so I've heard. I admit to not knowing too much about them). Good luck.

Yes, getting stuff CGC graded costs money, I forget the exact cost but I know it's at least $20 a comic and I'm pretty sure it's closer to $50 (if not more...)
From my experience working at a comic store for the past 4 years I can offer this advice, (and I mean no offense by this) but if you have to ask what something is worth, 90% of the time it's not worth anything, ESPECIALLY if it's from anytime during the 80s~90s. ("I have these really old comics from the 80s, are they worth anything?" is my favorite quote so far)
As far as price guides go, Wizard is best for seeing what's new and hot, but the Overstreet is the more reliable (and expensive) guide on the market. It's only annual, so it won't tell you what the current trends are but it's more complete and accurate for older issues.

If you don't have one, you could always use notepad, like I used to do... LOTS of typing though.
So... what are you getting rid of?
i wrote my own program but then when it was getting too combersome for 25,000 books, i moved to excel too...
most people use wizard vs overstreet anyway, and when selling on ebay like i do, people will use wizard to guide them...
"Grabbin your butt? That's not very lady-like." "I'm not a lady." "Oh. Whatever."
I'd stick with Overstreet, personally. Wizard reflects the trends of the comics industry, but a book that's priced at twenty bucks might not be worth that much for long, perhaps not even by the time you get your Wizard on.
Also, alhough individual collectors might buy your books for price guide prices, comic book stores will laugh at your ass. And NO ONE will buy your entire collection at cover price.
If I were you, I'd hang on to that shit, buddy. I don't know how old you are, but you might miss that collection a few years down the road, and regret selling it for beer money or to pay the rent, whatever.
Anyway, I notice you live in Maine, as do I at the moment. I would buy any trade paperbacks or hardcovers you have that I don't own. I had about 100 of my TPBs stolen in November and I'm trying to recoup at a reasonable price.
Honestly, though, I'd just box 'em up and let 'em sit. You might be bored with comics now, but I'd bet money that you'll be pissed down the road if you unload them, especially at bulk-type prices.
As someone who also worked in a comic book store I also go along with Overstreet Price Guide for books Pre-1990s. They do a really good job and most owners and buyers use that as an indicator. I'd use Wizard for stuff after the 90s, they seem to be a bit more generous with that era while Overstreet kinda dismisses it. I disagree with the 80s books having no value. Remember this was the era of Marvel's best storylines like Dark Phoenix, Elektra, Kraven's Last Hunt and a ton of good books. Hell, a GI Joe book is up there.
I also disagree with the cover price statement if someone comes into a store and buys Amazing Fantasy 15 for 15 cent then you are getting hosed. There are a few books not worth cover price, but those are usually from titles that don't exist anymore. If you have the entire Sandman run and you don't get cover price for them or more, go on ebay and make a smal fortune. Its the local comic book store's loss not yours. Being a bitter ex-employee of a comic book store let me warn you ahead of time of the comic book owners. They are greedy, will not give you the right amount even when they are robbing you blind. If you know an honest owner then he's probably unemployed. Your best bet is ebay or a comic book auction site if one exists, it would be cool if it did though, what a minute I have to copyright that idea.
A Fan- 5,000 books man , now thats a great collection unless its all Marvel Max and bad 198-2000 DC books.
Wizardworld used to have this great cataloging system where it would price everything for you and you could buy and sell there too but they seem to have disappeared. Later on tonite before WM i might post a general list of what I'm getting rid of.

5000? That's NOT a collection, try adding a '0' to that number and then you have a collection. I'm working on my 23rd long box and there's no stopping me baby! I need MORE!
As for 80s era DC books, you do realize that Teen Titans had its best run in the 80s, right? Also we had the excellent Mike Grell GREEN ARROW series, The original Suicide Squad series, Checkmate!, The Shadow!!, Shade the Changing Man, Bernie Wrightson's Swamp Thing... 1980's DC was actually quite good when you think about it.
Then again Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld also was from the 80s so that does cancel out a lot of the good stuff. Oh yeah, and Captain Carrot also... that REALLY sucked.
Cerebus: Barbarian, Prime Minister, Pope, Perfect House Guest.

WORD. Eight years I collected comic books, and now they're all in a set of boxes in my basement, nicely tucked away for a rainy day. In twenty years, I'll bust them out.
"I have no intention of uttering my last words on the stage. Room service and a couple of depraved young women will do me quite nicely for an exit."-- Peter O'Toole
"I'm gonna rip the eyes out of your head, and piss down your dead skull!" -- Jack Nicholson, in A Few Good Men
Better than anything I have ever seen. You can even sell some of them there, if you can find a buyer. If you are willing to pay $20 for six months, you can even log your books on the site and it will organize them, and track the values for you.
Been a member there for almost 2 years- a great resource...

It's not going to matter. The overprinted stuff from the early 90s is never going to be worth a dime, no matter what the story was or anything else. When you've got 10 million copies of a comic floating around, one of them is useless.
Stuff up until 1990 or so (when the ridiculous boom started) might be a different story though.
It seems that I am - in no particular order - Zack Morris, John Adams, a Siren, Janeane Garofalo, Cheer Bear, Aphrodite, a Chihuahua, Data, Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel, Amy-Wynn Pastor, Hydrogen, Bjork, Spider-Man, Boston, and a Chaotic Good Elvin Bard-Mage.
Hey, I LIKED Captain Carrot. Especially the "Oz-Wonderland War" mini-series. But then, I'm a mark for L. Frank Baum and Lewis Carroll ...
Regarding value as it relates to quantity -- doesn't it somewhat balance things out that comics today sell much, much less than comics of yesteryear did? I've heard it said that, for instance, back in the late '70s, DEFENDERS was considered a poor seller because it only moved 125,000 issues a month -- but today, even Marvel or DC would murder to have a comic that sold 125,000 a month. Of course, this doesn't apply to the excessive cases of overhype (my copy of the "Death of Superman" issue is probably worth more as kindling than as a collectible).
"next to of course god america i love you land of the pilgrims' and so forth oh say can you see by the dawn's early my country tis of centuries come and go and are no more what of it we should worry in every language even deafanddumb thy sons acclaim your glorious name by gorry by jingo by gee by gosh by gum why talk of beauty what could be more beaut- iful than these heroic happy dead who rushed like lions to the roaring slaughter they did not stop to think they died instead then shall the voice of liberty be mute?"

Wow. Good collection. Good luck selling it all. If your stuff is in good condition, a lot of stores'll buy up your stuff for either store credit or cash money. Shop around, and your rare (read: GOOD) stuff will probably bid you farewell in exchance for such compensation. It's a seller's market, my friend.
Actually the fight was on both. They offered a PPV for anyone who does not have Showtime or who REALLY wanted to see the Jeff Lacy and Diego Corrales fights.
