Over at the Torch (pwtorch.com), they posted today's Obscure Wrestling Reference. Apparently, in the description for the upcoming "Jason vs. Freddy" movie, they use the word "smackdown" to describe the fight. The commentary then proceeds the get mind numbingly stupid ("Steve Austin shouldn't be jealous of The Rock having a famous word, though. After all, Austin's famous term "What" is used so much more!"), which is what really irked me. Does the Torch bother to check whether or not their Obscure Wrestling References are just that, or do they simply post anything anyone sends to them as apparently they need space to fill.

There's also the legitimate question of whether or not the term 'smackdown' has transcended its wrestling connontation to become a common slang term for a fight, but that would require thought, which is lacking from the original Torch post.

I apologize for being a Buffy/Angel mark.

Oh, like you need to ask if they screen their emails.

I think the "Obscure Wrestling Reference" is crap. I don't care who mentioned (insert big name wrestler here) on whatever show. Stick to the news.

I deffinitely have to give Rocky/WWE credit for making the term "mainstream", but I first remember hearing it in Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg's song "Nuttin but a G-Thang" back in '91/'92.

"And if yo bitches talk shit, I'll have to put the smack down", or something like that.

Try not to get dunked on.
I wish I could work the random images thingy.

I was wondering about the origins of 'smackdown'. I didn't think it was something the Rock would have come up with.

I wonder if there are any other *industry* specific publications which have an Obscure References section. (and if so, I wonder if the Rock's first use of smackdown would have qualified as an obscure rap reference...)

The Torch got really stupid with their references a while back when they felt that finding cheap WWF/E videos qualified as a reference, and as a result, I stopped reading the Morning/Afternoon/Evening Updates for a few months. The same result may follow again.

I apologize for being a Buffy/Angel mark.

You're not tempted to make up an obscure wrestling reference that wouldn't be easily verifiable to see if they print it.

E.G. On tonight's episode of Royal Canadian Air Farce, Mike from Kenmore told Jacques Chirac (played by Luba Goy) that he was truly Stone Cold. Was this line included because Wrestlemania is this weekend?
