The problems with ANY celebrity or semi-celebrity speaking up on their political views are as follows:

1. While celebrities are followed around and drooled over by the media like, well, like celebrities, the importance and credibility that the public for the most part is willing to offer them by singing, acting, or playing a sport does not carry over in any way when they decide to make an attempt at being a regular person with an opinion. It's immediately discredited beause they are just dumb celebrities who are supposed to entertain us.

2. The celebrities are dumb enough not to realize that most of the things they say come across badly and that the public disdain for them before they make their personal views known may only grow as they make soundbite-style comments with seemingly no thought put into them. This is just me, but I'd much rather sit and listen to Bill Maher and 3 other people, some with opposing views, sit down and debate the war every Friday night and give them at least an ounce of respect than read about what Barbara Streisand and Mike Farrell said in passing to some reporter.

3. Like Asteroid Boy and Grimis (boy, that's a fun pair) said, some of them can't even be bothered to stand by the things they say. That hurts them in the real world where it matters, and in their celebrity world where it doesn't. Why bother?

I hope this doesn't labeled flaming by the Zimms, but I'll take my chances.

To all of the Northern, European, or whatever-the-hell-you-are schmucks who continue to cast a disdainful eye on the people of the Southeastern US as though we are all ignorant, crooked-toothed racists: Fuck off.

Do we have nutjobs down here? Sure. I'll bet if you look around your place of residence, you'll find you have your share too. Yes, the horrendous slave system instituted by the European powers did perpetuate in the South until the 19th century. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone here who would not denounce it. Yes, this region was the focus of the Civil Rights movement 50 years ago. Again, with the exception of some wackos, people here understand that the way things were was wrong, and many of them participated in that movement. We learned the lesson. Did you?

We talk more slowly than you; we don't think more slowly. We're less urbanized than you. I look at your inner cities and don't think that's such a bad thing.

Our culture is different than yours. Where are all the "tolerance" and "embrace other cultures" rants in reference to us? Oh, I guess we don't count. I forgot that we're a bunch of right-wing bigots who want to line up the colored folks and string 'em up. Sorry. If everyone went by the stereotypes of the Northeast, it would probably be quarantined.

Wake up. I'm sick of the stereotypes. I'm sick of the media rushing to Klan rallies when I have never seen or heard of one nearby in my life though I was born and raised here (here being several Southern states including KY, TN, GA, and AL).

We are educated. Hell, next time a loved one is cured of cancer, odds are you can thank the creators of Taxol at Florida State University. You may even be at UF or Duke or Vanderbilt being treated.

For those of you who at least make attempts to understand our point of view, please accept a hearty "Thank you". The rest of you...please see the end of paragraph 2.

[sigh]

I feel better...I reckon.

In response to Hairy, there are indeed plenty of ignorant crooked tooth racists here in Michigan, many of which showed up for the recent WWE house show I went to in East Lansing.

And yeah, here's another vote for the Dixie Chicks not exactly being hard-gunning redneck country... I'll contibute to the stereotyping by saying that I believe most of their fans to be middle class soccer mom types, or people who work in supermarkets and end up hypnotized by horrible country songs they hear twice a day every week over the store radio station.

When I was working, I heard that "I hope you daaaaance" song so many times that it took on a perverse foothold in my tired brain in a way that makes you sing along in shameful goofiness.

We've got plenty of ignorant racists here in Massachusetts as well.

I know exactly what you mean on the supermarket subject. I work in the dairy section and I had that damn song stuck in my head for almost a month.

Mmm... we've been known to have our fair share of rednecks here. And don't forget the abysmal soundtrack to Boston Market, which almost made me claw my ears off when I had to work there.

The sad part is that song you mentioned (LeeAnn Womack's "I Hope You Dance") was SUPPOSED to be part of a relative's wedding. Mercifully, the band forgot to play it and decided to keep bringing Tha Funk.

It's not just there, the redneck voice is everywhere. Observe:

Well, fuck, man I'm from motherfuckin' Statesboro Georgia and that's the way we talk here.

Well, fuck you man, I'm from fuckin' Bakersfield California, and that's the way we do things over here!!

Hey, fuck both you motherfuckers, I'm from motherfuckin' Boseman Montana, and that's the way we talk here!

Hey, fuck all you motherfuckers, I'm from Juneau Alaska and that's the way we talk up here!!!

Hey, I'm paying tribute to another man. And I'm sure that David Cross will be flattered to know that he's being paraphrased on a wrestling message board.

Last week, the Dixie Chicks' album "Home" dropped from #4 to #6 on the Billboard 200 charts.

This week, the album has moved from #6... to #4.

And on the Top Country Albums chart, they've gone from #1... to #1.

They're being crippled by the backlash. CRIPPLED, I tell you!

Hey, I'm toying with the idea of picking up their CD. I do like that "Landslide" cover, and I've heard that it's very reminiscent of the "O Brother" soundtrack, plus I tend to support people when they're being dicked over for speaking their mind.

EDIT: I had said that I wasn't much of a country fan, but then I realized I'm using a Steve Earle quote as a signature file, so I don't know how true that statement is anymore.

It would take the Dixie Chicks endorsing Al Sharpton for President for me to buy their album. General rule: if Oprah likes it, it sucks ass.

It seems that I am - in no particular order - Zack Morris, John Adams, a Siren, Janeane Garofalo, Cheer Bear, Aphrodite, a Chihuahua, Data, Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel, Amy-Wynn Pastor, Hydrogen, Bjork, Spider-Man, Boston, and a Chaotic Good Elvin Bard-Mage.

Just a dang minute...spend your money how you like, but how are they being "dicked with" for speaking their minds? They spoke their mind...so if a bunch of people don't like what they said, we're dicking with them?

Freedom of speech means they can say what they like. Not that I have to agree, like, or keep silent about it.

I agree that I am not so sure they are being "dicked over" for speaking their mind. Why should I be then FORCED to buy something, because someone opposes me? Don't I also have the same Freedom of Speech rights NOT to buy a Dixie Chicks album (besides the fact that I can't stand their "music" anyway) because they offended me?

I think it ties back to Michael Moores "I'm an American" crack. He is basically claiming he said the things he did because as an American, he has a right to.

Well, as an American who find Michael Moore, the Dixie Chicks, and even moreso the rapist Polanski completly offensive, I am exercising my Free Speech rights not to put my money in their pockets. It is not only the American, but the Capitalist way. And it is a lot more respectful and civilized than engaging in violent (and otherwise) acts of civil disobedience that are not only illegal, but cost the victim cities millions in tax dollers per day.

I can't wait NOT to see the next Martin Sheen movie/tv show...
