I can't believe they gave the Oscar to Eminem!

All in all it was a good show. Lots of surprises to go along with the people who deserved to win. Love him or hate him, Michael Moore's speech was pretty brave.

Get well soon Kurt, Batista, Randy, Edge, Kevin, Scotty, Bubba, Regal....

Man, that's depressing...and I know there's people I've forgotten!

I am still stunned over a few things. One of which was Bowling for Columbine winning and then having Moore lead the entire nominies about to the stage for that speech. I expect nothing else for that man, Good job. Still can't believe he got the nominies up there plus I can't believe people booed him. I thought the tide turn in the pro-war thing after Brody's speech and Susan Sandron giving the peace sign. Now back to the awards..

I wasn't shocked Chicago won, but the tide seemed to turn on them during the later awards even though they got best picture. It was the safe picture of the year. However, I thought Roman Polenski and Adrian Broday were huge surprises even though I called Brody and my friend called Polenski. I like Roman, but this should have been Marty's year. Chris Cooper and Zeta were good choices and I thought Kidman got it mainly due to the snob from Moulin Rouge then anything else. Everything else was good, Two Towers getting two oscars was ok since they are almost a lock for everything next year. Steve Martin did a good job better than Whoopie and Billy's last stints.

A Fan- Still in shock and awe.

I'm baffled (as usual) by the Academy logic.

The Pianist has the best actor, best script, best director, but it's not the best film?

ODD, very ODD

Also, two of the best performances at the Oscars this year were by Olivia De Havilland and Kirk Douglas. Olivia making a scripted speech sound spontaneous and from the heart and Kirk battling his affliction with dignity and humour.

What was the story with him tearing the Chicago ballot in two though?

I thought it was Hilarious that Eminem won. What a joke. There were plenty of welcome surprises this year, but also a lot of crap choices.

Good to see the Academy branching out and giving awards to those neglected segments of our society, the homophobes (Eminem) and the rapists (Roman Polanski). Next year, honorary Oscar to O.J. Simpson for his fine work in The Naked Gun.

The Pianist was the surprise of the night, making me feel like even more the fool since that's the only Best Picture nominee I haven't seen. Good to see the one nominated actor who hadn't won (Brody) get the award. Great speech, too.

Sean Connery must've borrowed Jerry Seinfeld's puffy shirt.

I think it's sad that Scorsese loses because more people had a problem with Miramax's campaigning than they did with Roman Polanski raping a 13-year-old girl.

Steve Martin had a few good lines, but he looked nervous as hell. The quip after Michael Moore's speech made the entire night, however.

The new voice on Mickey Mouse is just so, so wrong.

What's happening to Nicole Kidman? She used to be drop-dead gorgeous, but her face all of a sudden tightened the hell up. At least somewhere, Tom Cruise is crying.

Michael Moore really needs to stop harping about the election in 2000. You're behind the times, dude; Bush has done way more stupid things since then to criticize.

Hooray for Pedro Almodovar. Talk To Her should've gotten a Best Picture nod.

You know what's scary? The phrase "Oscar-winning screenwriter Ben Affleck."

Before they both turned around, I couldn't tell the difference between Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones. I think she's having the baby tomorrow, since that sucker's about to blow.

U2 lost to Eminem??? Are you kidding me??? That SOB didn't even show up and he wins??? He gets some clown in a Pistons jersey to go up there and get the trophy from Babs??? Dammit!

Chicago was the best of the nominated pictures (again, I haven't yet seen Pianist), but there have been plenty of better movies this year: Catch Me If You Can, Minority Report, About Schmidt and (the best) Talk To Her. After the likes of Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind, however, it's to see a non-average movie win Best Picture.

A few notes:

Overall I enjoyed the show, I thought alot of the right people got awards. I think Jack probably deserved the best actor award, but whatever.

Chicago is probably the best picture that would win the award.

The U2 song wasn't really that good. Was "Lose Yourself"? Probably. It's a good rap song from a pretty good movie. No sense in discriminating just because of the genre or artist. Kudos to the Academy for that.

I've really cooled to Gangs of New York now that time has past. Despite his personal problems, Polanski probably deserved the award, The Pianist is extremely well directed. Should his off the set habits disqualify him from the running? Maybe. Probably. It's a matter of opinion. I'd say, "Yes", but if doesn't, then he should have gotten it.

Catherine Zeta Jones and Nicole Kidman are both fine with me. The actors choices were what really surprised me, and just about the only things that I would argue with (Oh, and Frida...for make-up? Come on).

I understand they wanted to do something special for their anniversary, but trucking out all the actors and actresses who've won awards got a little tedious.

I was SO nervous for Kirk Douglas, until he cracked that annunciation joke. That really lifted alot of the tension from that segment.

After the upsets started rolling and the fact that an anime has won best picture along wit Eninem and Colubmine, a part of me was wondering if it was going to be the Two Towers' night. I do think that Return of the King has to win next year since both Towers and Fellowship lost two years straight. The academy can't be that cruel to the fanboys, can they?

I have to say that Peter O'Toole and Kirk Douglas really brought a level of class and humor to the show. It is a shame though that the Academny has never given those two awards before since I can't imagine better acting from Spartacus and Lawrence of Arabia. Since those two movies almost always get a shot or five whenever they show the history of the awards. Its always those two and Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and the Godfather that get a ton of shots in them. It is nice to see them get their awards it just feels like the honary award is the "Oops, we are really sorry we didn't give it to you before or have nominated since award."

A Fan- I probably will never see Chicago, but I may go see tne Pianist and Gangs of New York now.

In the Academy's defense, however, O'Toole had the bad luck to almost always come up against someone else who gave such a great performance that you couldn't have said that O'Toole was flat-out better. I think if hindsight was 20/20, he would've won over Rex Harrison in 1964, Cliff Robertson in 1968 or John Wayne in 1969, but them's the breaks.

Besides, in a way, it's cooler to have the record for most noms without a win. Lots of folks have Oscars, but only O'Toole and Richard Burton belong in the 7-times-unlucky club.

First off, I was pretty pleased with my performance in picking winners, at an even 50 percent (12-for-24). I called The Pianist for Screenplay which very few people had and did pretty well in the technical categories. Nonetheless, I think krakken beat me by one or two correct to earn overall bragging rights--correct me if I'm wrong. I should have gotten cinematography (I'd forgotten that the cinematographer of Perdition died, and that would have had a very good chance even if he hadn't), and I shouldn't have underestimated the power of a Holocaust film although, again, at least I had it for screenplay which most people didn't.

They never did have anyone perform "Lose Yourself", right? That was very strange. It's a hard song to ask someone else to do, especially on short notice, but they usually never omit a nominated song. Obviously Eminem's win was a big surprise, along with Talk To Her winning for screenplay and Brody and Polanski for The Pianist. One thing you should know about Polanski's win is that the girl in the case was actually openly campaigning for him. Nonetheless, Scorcese has just been totally screwed to still not have an Oscar at this point.

I thought Steve Martin was consistantly good, but didn't have any truly great moments. Billy Crystal with the musical numbers and his appearances edited into the film clips were signature moments. (They should have put one of those musical numbers into the song montage, by the way.) I guess the best line was the one about the script he submitted and they didn't change one word of it.

One thing I didn't like was that except for LOTR, they showed a trailer-like montage for each film instead of an actual scene. Bad move, and I hope they go back to using scenes next year.

I don't for the life of my understand why so many people think it's a foregone conclusion that LOTR:ROTK will win Best Picture next year. I don't think the first two are *that* good, and the academy has never been fond of science fiction. If they didn't give it to any of the Star Wars movies, what makes you think that this is a can't miss?

Kirk Douglas was great...I think the ripping of the card was just that Michael said that Kirk would read the winner, and this was showing that he was going to share the honor and have them read it together. The whole "look, there are lots of Oscar winners on stage together" thing, however, went on way too long, especially since they did the same thing a few years ago. It was cool to see Louise Rainier and such, but it wasn't worth it for the time it took sitting through all the recent winners.

I'm more unhappy with the winners than I am about having so many picks wrong.

But, I too ingored the Holocaust factor. I should have known better.

As to why the guy wore a Piston's jersey, I don't think he thought Eninem was going to win, so dress casually it is like a 4 hour event and tuxes don't do will in those conditions. Minus Rex and Cliff, they could have given the award to O'Toole those years, but I do admitt those was no way John Wayne was not getting that oscar that year.

The Return of the King theory has two things going for it that Star Wars doesn't. 1. Empire didn't get nominated even though it should have in hindsight. So, LOTR has momentum and pity going into next year's awards. 2. Return of the King doesn't have Ewoks in it. Hobbits yes, but no curry teddy bears that could kill any great film franchise. Plus, the buzz around it is that it will be bigger than the last two and the oscar loves epics. I do wish they would have given it to Fellowship now that way there is no chance that something like Schindler's List comes along and beats it out later. Fortuantly, this looks like a thin year minus Killing Bob.

Eminem: Good song that had more to do with the movie it was in than any of the others. The song basically encapsulated the entire movie into a couple minutes. Kinda creepy, though. After he won, I ran downstairs...

"Hey Dad, did you feel a chill just now?"
"No. Why?"
"Eminem won an Oscar."

Adrien Brody was good, but was a HUGE underdog going against 4 previous winners...but I guess a split occurred between Day-Lewis & Nicholson. Plus, The Pianist was good enough that it deserved to be recognized for something.

As for Polanski, I think people got caught up in the Marshall/Scorsese debate...went "Well, there's a guy who's popular but doesn't deserve it for Chicago...and a guy who's a legend but the campaign Miramax put on for him pissed all of us off.... Screw it, let's just give it to Polanski..."

I actually thought the Oscars were one of the best last night. Steve Martin was really good and a great opener and wit through out, Martin's joke on Connery tux was great. The controversy on stage and some surprise winners and Catherine Zeta Jones about the burst out of her dress at any moment.

I was shocked that Eminem won, but I don't really have a problem with it. His song did represent the movie better then the other songs nominated even though I never though he's win. Total surreal moment seeing Babs announce Eminem

Pianist was this years surprise and Gangs must be disappointed all the stuff I thought Gangs were in the front running (direction, lead actor) The Pianist took it. But I'm glad Adrien Brody, he delivered a great speech and great shocked reaction as well. Best moment of the night

I felt most sorry for Julian Moore, shut out of both lead and supporting actresses. Such a real fan of hers and Far From Heaven was overlooked all around this year IMO

Thanks for coming Jennifer Garner, she comes out and co presents with a computer generated mouse and the mouse does All the talking. Well at least the mouse is more real then Ben Affleck

Miramax has rubbed too many people the wrong way with their over zealous campaigning. Too many trade ads, throwing screening parties that violate academy rules, writing up fake articles (the robert wise piece) that trumpet their films, etc.

I don't think Scorsese lost though because of the campaigning, I think he lost because enough people realized that Gangs of New York really isn't that great of a film.

Steve Martin rocked the house last night; I was rolling on the floor laughing at his extended roast of Mickey Rooney. Also his Polanski zinger was great "Roman Polanksi is here tonight...GET HIM!" Also he had a great line after Micheal Moore's speech.

I think this year will go down as one of my favorites because there were so many shocking upsets, Brody, Polanksi, Eminem, Spirited Away...It was really refreshing after the last few years of the winners being too predictable. Chris Cooper tearing up really got to me, it was quite touching.

And was I the only who said "Olivia De Haviland is still alive" when she walked out?

Oh and I almost forgot to mention Adrien Brody's speech was one of the best ever, he managed to be sexy, funny and touching all in one speech. He also gets bonus points for so eloquently touching on the war at the end.
