I'm a Canadian, so of course I enjoy watching the superior programming brought into my home by American telelvision. So, I'm at home last night and turn on the TV to find CNN telling me that Iraq is being bombed. Okay. So, I change the channel...and it's more CNN. It's CNN on just about every channel.

What's with the simulcasting nowadays that with a HUGE base of news agencies and news networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and CNN...we only get one line of reasoning from everyone about why everything's happening? And worse, why is it that only one channel gets repeated (CNN) on EVERY OTHER CHANNEL?

*Sigh*

My guess is CNN has affiliate agreements with those stations. And, it could be worse, you could be getting war coverage from MTV. When I saw that, I immediately began to think that was the 6th sign of the apocolypse.
Now, the good thing about having MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, and CNBC on consecutive stations is the mental games you can play if bored/drunk. Start reading the bottom scroll on one station, then quickly use the up and down buttons to continue reading the scrolls on the other. Can provide interesting ideas, like Tony Blair, Prime Minister of China. Who said war can't provide some amusing moments.

"Yo man, it sucks when two poppin' fresh countries can't get along. It really brings me down from my buzz when I see people fightin'. But when war brings me down, I always have the cool smooth taste of Coca Cola to cheer me up. [Drinks] Ahh! Tasty. For MTV News..."

*Sigh* It seems like a cop-out, though. War-coverage wise. It's hard to think that Gord Gillies (my local newsman on Global) went to school for years to learn to be a journalist just so he can go "Here's CNN's coverage!".

Hey, that coverage is putting the bling bling in my bank account and John Norris is cold holding it down live. What did you tune in expecting to see anyway, "Sorority Life"?

Besides, I'd like to see Fox News bring in Dead Prez for war commentary. That segment was TV GOLD.

New York has a Fox station, so it is showing Fox News coverage of the war. Now, Why the NYC UPN station needs to show the SAME fox coverage, I don't get. Luckily I get the philly UPN so I can watch smackdown instead of the same coverage we've been seeing all day.

Yeah. MTV coverage is great. They were running down radio stations choosing not to play the Dixie Chicks(saying that they were violating the Chick's freedom of speech) and saying how these 18-22 year olds in our all volunteer army don't know what they're getting themselves into. It's like CNN on overdrive...

Personally news coverage here was a nightmare because I had THREE stations simulcasting Fox News Channel here, including the UPN affiliate which pre-empted my Smackdown!

Speaking of news outlets, Does anyone know of either a good Arabic translation program on the web, or a site that translates Aljazeera.net into english?

Those who fought against this war's coming must now stand and say we stand behind our troops and wish them the safest possible future. May as few people as possible suffer for this effort to come to a conclusion. If war must come, let it come and go swiftly and as bloodlessly as it can.

Try this (tarjim.ajeeb.com). It's not perfect, but it works about as well as any other Internet translator program.

I'm suprised Pittsburgh got Smackdown on the air. Our UPN affiliate is owned by KDKA, our local CBS affiliate. I was sure they were going to double up on CBS's coverage, but they didn't.

EDIT: Hmm, that didn't USED TO be a pay site... Well, fuck 'em then.

Yeah, it was kinda interesting seeing the same thing happen on 9.11. You finally got to learn who owns what station. Didn't know until then that Discovery/TLC were actually OWNED by the Beeb (they ARE, right?).

Well CNN have just been booted out of Baghdad for being a "propaganda tool";

http://media.guardian.co.uk/iraqandthemedia/story/0,12823,919382,00.html

I'd take the BBC over of the other networks I've seen. Too much sensationalism and scare mongering for my liking, I'd go as far to call some of the journalisim unprofessional.

I'm a big fan of the BBC coverage, but I only get a little taste of it on my local PBS station.

As far as FOX News showing up on UPN, from my understanding, FOX bought a fedw UPN affiliates across the country. I know that is the case here with XETV (FOX) and XUPN (UPN).

On the same sorta subject but not really, did anyone else see that Iraqi guy's press conference on TV last night? It started out like a normal enough despotic press conference, but then it turned into some kinda combination drunken rampage/Smackdown promo.

I think it was somewhere around the time he called the USA "Al Capone" was when he started knocking the microphones off of the lectern. I always wondered how those stayed on.

Gonna be a short war if 36 hours in they're already losing their shit on live TV.

BBC is still relatively easy to get on shortwave in the evenings. SW radios are fairly cheap these days...if you would like a frequency to listen, I can find a few for you...

There is no way no matter how much air time they need to fill that Hootie Johnson & Augusta will allow CBS to address the issue outside the gates. When it comes to TV coverage of this event, it is Augusta that pulls all the strings.
