I just wanted to ask the people here at wienerboard to please take a few seconds when you get in your car to buckle your seat belt. I was in a three car accident yesterday where I was stopped at a stoplight, and the car behind me hit me at 45 miles per hour and it pushed into another car in front of me. I never even saw it coming. It totaled my car, but luckily for me, I had my seatbelt on. My airbag also did not deploy like it should have. I am truely grateful that after yesterday, I am able to, with only some soreness in my neck, write this post to you. I know this isn't some life or death story, but things could have been much worse for me had I not worn my seat belt, so I just wanted to share this with everyone, and hopefully nothing like this will happen to you, but if it does, you will be as lucky as I am, and be able to walk away from it.

I'll second that statement. My seatbelt helped me survive this....

It's always sound advice. It's the first thing I do once I get in the car. The air bag won't save you without the seatbelts.

Any word yet as to why the airbag didn't deploy?

Anyway, I was cut off yesterday on the highway. Didn't crash, but it would have been a big one. Seatbelts are indeed our friends.

Seatbelts = GOOD.
Airbags = Debateably Good

Seatbelts stop you from sailing through your windshield. Airbags hit you and can knock your ass out. I'd rather be knocked out than THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD.

Most likely if you get knocked out by your airbag you arn't keeping you hands at 11 & 2 or is it 10 & 3, any way most airbag injuries are caused by the drivers hands being knocked back in their face.

However I wish I could get my girlfriend to buckle up every time she gets into the car. The whole well you should drive safe thing isn't a valid excuse. Its the other idiots Im worried about.

I don't feel comfortable in a car without my belt on.

I was in an accident once where I was rear-ended, spun around twice, slammed into a snowbank at the side of the road (Maine in January), caught my breath, said "Holy fuckin' shit," and then the airbag popped out, ripped up my chin and broke my pinky finger. I was a bit pissed.

Don't trust those damn things.

Since I got my license, I have always had the policy that everybody in the car gets buckled up, and if you don't buckle up we don't go anywhere.

I agree, although it's amazing how much that practice can piss off some people. I've actually had people refuse to ride with me because I make them wear a seatbelt even if we're just going around the block.

I'd also add that seatbelts are the reason that my wife is only in physical therapy and receiving steroid injections in her sacroiliac instead of me being a widower raising two small children. Tricia and the kids all "walked" away from that one while both of the vehicles involved, our minivan and the blithering idiot's 82 Cavalier, were both totalled. IIRC, the estimate to repair our minivan was in the general vicinity of 14K.

For an airbag to deploy, there needs to be a deceleration of at least 15 mph (depending on the airbag design). So, if you are at a standstill and are hit from behind, you hit the car in front of you before your speed is high enough to deploy the airbag. Of course, if you are the car going 45 mph and you hit a stopped car, your airbag should deploy.

Ever since I got ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt two years ago, I wear it unless I'm moving my car across the street. Mostly because I don't feel like paying another $75. -_-

Not to be mean or anything, but that gave me a pretty funny mental image. Think cartoony exaggerated airbag explosion.

Back on topic, I'm glad that all of you involved in accidents came out relatively okay. My mom ALWAYS made me wear my seatbelt no matter how far we were going, and I'm better off for it. Everyone in my car wears seatbelts as well, myself included (obviously.) Once again, WEAR YOUR SEATBELT ANYTIME YOU SIT DOWN IN A CAR.

That, and hug someone you love. You never know if you might not have that chance again. [/sappiness]
