I remember the moment when I first learnt of his death. It was actually on teletext a feature we have on TV's here in the UK, no idea about the US. They NEVER cover wrestling.
I switched on Monday morning before leaving for Uni and saw the news about a wrestler falling to his death. It knocked me for six when the name written was Owen Hart. I couldn't believe it. For some reason the wording had the term Stone in it and it may not be right, but I was hoping they had made a mistake and that it was Steve Austin. not the best thing to wish for, but at that moment, all I wanted it to be was anyone but Owen.
Hell he was the only reason with The Rock I watched the WWE for the a few short months after Montreal 97. I taped shows, fast forwarded and watched just the bits involving Owen and The Nation. I marked out like a motherfucker on his return, when he came through and attacked HBK at the end of the DX PPV.

I found out about it while watching a hockey game on TSN here in Canada. Every half hour there was a sports update, and the sports guy there said that Owen had died after an accident. I called up the local newspaper's sports desk, and they confirmed it, and thus began a 72 hour bout of insomnia/depression that I'd never experienced before prior to that day. I was shocked beyond belief.
The tribute show the WWF put on the next day was pure gold. It was the best Raw ever, in my opinion...

While I sympathise w/ you that you lost a hero and a favorite performer of yours, it is very tasteless to ,IMO, admit that you wished that Austin was dead instead of Owen. On that day did think maybe it was Sting who had fallen from the rafters and died (he had the rafter gimmick also at the time), or is SCSA just not a "favorite" of yours so he deserved to fall from the ceiling and die a horrific death... your pathetic.

No offense, but perhaps you should re-read what you type out before you send it. I find that sometimes people are in such a hurry to write something out (perhaps because they are emotional, as I would guess from your post that you are), they sometimes forget to write certain words. This really makes it hard to understand what you're saying.
When something happens to a person of importance, people act irrational. It's obvious to me that Crip at that time was just in denial, which happens to everyone. He knew that someone had to have died (they wouldn't have made an announcement if they weren't sure), and he tried to believe that it was someone else, someone other than his most favorite wrestler.
Obviously, judging from your screename you really like Steve Austin. I think that because of that you are overreacting in this matter. People act irrationally when they are struck with grief.

I was watching the PPV as it happened. I didn't really know what the hell was going on after Owen dropped from the rafters, but when J.R. announced during the Union/Corporation 8-man tag that Owen had died, my heart just sank to the floor, and could not focus at all on the rest of the PPV.
Just six weeks before I'd been chanting "Nugget" at him here in Seattle and having a great time because I enjoyed Owen a lot as a performer. He turned the Blue Blazer stuff into comic gold, and you could tell he was trying to make the best of a silly, go-nowhere gimmick.
That night I was sad, but the next day I was devastated. I think for the first time in like seven years I cried. I had to close at work the night of the Owen Memorial Raw, so when I got home, I popped in the tape and watched it all and cried some more. It was absolutely tragic that it happened to someone as loved and as good a person as Owen was, and that it could have been prevented.
It would have been tragic had it happened to anyone, but because it happened to Owen, it made it that much worse. I've never really felt the same about the WWF/E after that happened.
I still remember that I'd heard something about someone dying at the PPV the night before, but it didn't hit me until I got to school the day before...
My history teacher (I was still in high school) told me that someone had died while flying through the rafters at the event the night before. I wasn't completely sure, but I knew it HAD to be Owen.
It devastated me. The man was pure comic gold from the second he walked out of the curtain until he disappeared. I can only wonder what might have been...

As I said in my initial post, the only reason I latched on to Steve Austin was simply the term "Stone" being used in the wording of the report I read.
I'm actually a mark for Steve Austin, I consider the guy to at this moment in time, to be the greatest of all time. It was nothing personal as far as choosing him, just the first name I latched onto.
I had just gotten a tattoo and my friend and I were hoping to make it back to his house in time to catch the PPV. The tattoo took longer than expected and we missed the first hour and didn't see it. I'm glad now that my tattoo took as long as it did.
I remeber checking the updates of the pay-per view on the PWTorch website. Right before I went to bed, they said a wrestler had been injured or something like that. I didn't think it was a big deal. The next morning when I woke up for school, my mom told me that he died. I turned on the "Today Show" on NBC, and it was the headline story. Sad.
