WOW... Tons of stuff happening:

DC Comics have acquired Elfquest! We'll be getting large, color hardcovers archive collectors books, regular, b&w trades, and a new color series that's supposed to start up in the summertime. Elfquest, for those who don't know, is one of the longest running series out there, as it's in it's 25th year right now.

Marvel Comics is starting up it's EPIC COMICS line again! Epic Illustrated gave most comic fans here in the states it's first taste of Morbius, the first color Elfquest story, and Marvel's first Groo appearance just to name a few. The Epic Comics line also gave us Todd McFarlane's first comic work, Elektra Assassin, Groo the Wanderer(for 120 issues), and Martial Law(which is due for a revamp!)

Dark Horse Comics acquires rights to Conan the Barbarian! The first story arc is being written by Kurt Busiek. Can't wait for this one either.

----------

As with the good, there's always the bad:

Salvador Larocca has been taken OFF X-treme X-men and TOLD to draw new NAMOR series. So they're taking the ONLY reaso to read one crappy book, and putting him on ANOTHER crappy book? That makes sense...

Paradise X, Alex Ross's epic third chapter in the not quite so alternat universe ending to the Marvel Universe is being SHORTENED. They've already cancelled the 'X' issue and are trying to find other ways to shorten the series even more before the last issue comes out. 2 for 2 in the 'Marvel is stupid' catagory...

Wolverine is cancelled! WTF?!?! Bullshit! Well, yes and no; Yes it's cancelled, but it's only so they can start it back up again with a brand spanking new #1... and THAT gives us our Marvel Comics hat trick.

I know I'll regret asking this, but...

Have you guys ever considered finding a comix board to talk about this stuff? I know there's oodles of them.

Personal garbage aside, I just think that it cannot be denied that you run a pretty tight ship here. Rarely do you have to put up with trolls for very long, and obnoxious, insulting behavior is not tolorated at all. Most all of the other boards I have been on (regardless of the focus) quite frankly suck, because 90% of the posts are garbage that you don't want to read anyway. So you spend all of your time scanning for OK posts instead of actually reading. Plus the average Weiner is a lot more interesting to engage in conversation with than most average users on other message boards.

I mean, have you SEEN them? Considering some of the stuff that pissed you off, you would likely ban the entire board in frustration, and no one could really blame you.

I guess the comic-fan Weiners figure they can already come here to post about wrestling, Politics, Football (among other sports) and video games, as well as other "Random" topics, so why not comic books?

It's not like we're talking about comics in the wrestling forum. It is my impression that the Random forum is for talking about things that don't fit into any other forum, like... comic books. I don't see what the problem is.

And, ever since the Warren Ellis Forum shut down, there are no engaging, intelligent comics boards on the net.

As for Marvel, I can't understand why everyone has been giving them verbal blowjobs for the past few years. Yes, they FINALLY have good writers in Bendis, Millar, Ennis and Morrison. However, I don't think Bendis is nearly the GOD of comics that everyone thinks he is. he writes a great crime story, but his Daredevil has been pretty weak, and, although I like Ultimate Spidey, it's pure fluff, like the movie. He's capable, but he's no Moore. Millar has the vitriol of Ellis without the wit and sense of humor. He's another guy I like, but who definitely needs a lot of work before he can be one of the big guys. Like Bendis, I enjoy Millar, but he doesn't seem too flexible in what he can write. Ennis, in my opinion, peaked on Preacher, and, while his work on Punisher and Fury was fun, that's all it was, like a Jet Li or Steven Seagal movie. I think DC got all of his smart, thoughtful work in Hellblazer and Preacher, and he's settled in at marvel to coast on sound and fury. And don't even get me started on Morrison. he's like a shadow of his former self, writing X-Men stories where the best of his trademark "acidhead cosmic weirdness" comes off as a rejected Invisibles story. besides that, he's paired with Frank "I can't be fucking bothered to turn out pages on a regular basis like everyone else in the industry" Quitely, which gives the book no artistic continuity and makes for a jarring read, especially in TPB (the only books I buy anymore) format.

Anyway, fuck Marvel. Even their mature-readers imprint takes place in the fucking Marvel Universe so I can't sit down and read a solid non-superhero story without captain fucking America poking his square-jawed ass in the picture. How about some creator-owned shit like DC has been doing for over a decade?

Have you ever BEEN on a comic message board? It's horrible! Can you just imagine what it's like to have all these complete dorks gathered in on spot ONLY to discuss the one thing thier lives are centered around? It's worse then then going to a XENA convention... er, so I've been told, that is. Those people creep even ME out, and that's(obviously) a hard thing to do.

Jakegnosis: The Epic line WILL mostly be creator owned books. And there is now talk of bringing back Groo into the fold when Dark Horse loses it's rights next year. It seems Sergio wants to get back to doing a monthly book again.

I miss Preacher. It was one of the most well-written, off the wall, entertaining books I've ever read.

I agree about Ennis peaking with it. Everything else he does now seems...well...less important.

According to the latest Wizard, Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon are hard at work on another Preacher series, currently title unknown, which'll pick up where the first series left off. It's slated to begin this summer.

The Chase Is On:
8th: Oilers [29-23-8-8] 74pts; 14 games left
14th: Flames [23-31-10-4] 60pts; 14 games left
Flames must win 7 more games than the Oilers do to make playoffs
Any combination of 7 Oilers wins or Flames losses eliminates them from the playoffs

As much as I loved Preacher, shouldn't they just let it go? It was a finely crafted story, but some things just need to end.

Wizard is full of shit, as usual. The only possible spin-off of Preacher is a Sex Detectives special that Ennis wrote and DC wouldn't publish because it was too graphic. Ennis has publicly stated that the story he wanted to tell with Preacher was over, and we'd never see Jesse, Tulip, Cass, etc. again. He mentioned the Sex Detectives speial as the only possible new Preacher project.

If you are indeed right, then Ennis has fucking sold out. I can imagine Preacher 2 being worse than DK2, if that's possible. Fucking Frank Miller. I hate him now.

Cerebus- Thanks for the Epic info. Seems to me that they could just add creator owned titles to MAX like DC did with Vertigo, but I've stopped trying to fathom Marvel's actions. They're just as stupid as WWE.

While I can see what the majority of you are talking abut with Ennis's stuff NOT being as good as his earlier work, I have to disagree because he's been writing the best Punisher stuff to come along since the first year of WAR JOURNAL. The issue where the Journalist has kidnapped Det. Soap and threatens to kill him if the Punisher doesn't let him do a story on him is fucking GREAT! And you know what? I LOVED the FURY series. I couldn't stop laughing through it. THAT is how I picture Nick Fury in todays world of spooks and espionage. The time of the Howlin' Commandos is long past, war has hardened him, and he isn't gonna take shit from no pencil pusher. And YES he WOULD go and start a war like that, because old war-horses like him don't want to be put out to pasture.

My issue with the possibility of Preacher 2: God Strikes Again has nothing to do with the quality of Ennis' current work (Miller on the otherhand, was already in a downward spiral, did anyone else read Sin City: Hell and Back?). I think he's already told the story of those characters. If he continues right where he left off that cheapens the series considerably (IMO)...

Don't get me wrong, I still love Ennis (with the exception of the awful Just a Pilgrim), I just don't think he's writing like he used to. If you look back at Preacher, Hitman and Hellblazer, you can tell he put his fucking heart and soul in those books. I don't get that from him anymore. I really loved Fury, liked it more than Punisher, but it wasn't anything super-special. The stuff he writes now is head-and-shoulders better than what anyone else in the business is doing now, with a few notable exceptions.

he's just chilling out and writing for fun and for money these days, and there's nothing wrong with that. Alan Moore is doing the same thing, and he's the best writer to hit comics, period. However, whereas Moore is still doing groundbreaking, on-the-edge shit (just not in comics), Ennis seems to be just kicking it, telling fun, brutal stories with a human touch. He isn't trying to write something fucking massive and amazing like he used to.

And there isn't anything wrong with that.

On a side note, I thought Hell and Back was one of the better Sin City stories. The Big Fat Kill; that shit SUCKED. Sin City was always all about the art, anyway. The stories were always trite and done-to-death.

I heard that Ennis was PISSED when DC refused to let him do Sex Detectives, and he's refusing to do anything Preacher-related for them till they do. Take that for what it's worth.

The only Ennis stuff I've read lately has been THE PRO and THE AUTHORITY: KEV, and I found them both unbearably smug, bad enough to make me swear off anything he writes from here on out.

From Newsarama:

Agent X editor Marc Sumerak yesterday confirmed for the X-Fan website that Agent X will be cancelled with issue #12.

"It's with sadness in my heart (and a knife in my spleen) that I must step forward and confirm the rumors and rumblings: Agent X will indeed be reaching its finale with June's Agent X #12," Sumerak told X-Fan. "It really has been a long, wonderful life for this series, both as Agent X and its previous incarnation, Deadpool. 82 issues in all - quite a healthy run in today's market. Unfortunately, even the best of titles sometimes fail to find and hold a large enough audience to continue on. Such is the case here, sadly."

"But even with Agent X going away, we've got a whole slew of great new titles in development that we hope will have runs just as long and exciting as DP/AX did! Be sure to check them out when they start to hit the stands this April. If it's more Gail Simone and UDON you're after, be sure to check out Gail's work on The Marvelous Adventures of Gus Beezer this March and UDON's amazing art on the brand new X-related series, Sentinel, on sale April 2nd."

Evan Dorkin and Juan Bobillo are the creators for issues #10 and #11, while Daniel Way and Kyle Hotz will write and draw, respectively, issue #12.

Liike the earlier-cancelled Soldier X, Agent X was one of the thirteen titles which Marvel raised in price with April-shipping issues.

*Sniff* I loved Deadpool...ah well... At least now they can figure out what went wrong and fix it.
