A couple of observations since Austin's return:

With all the complaining about crowds chanting "What" to everything Austin says, no one seems to mention that Austin hasn't said it himself since his return. In fact, judging by last night's promo, it looks like he's returning to a more serious, ass-kicking style. (which I remember a lot of people wanted) It was intense, to the point, and helped drive home the point that the Rock has never beaten him at Mania.

And speaking of Mania, this is the MAIN EVENT match. This is the match that will likely get a lot of people to drop $40. The announcers, Bischoff, and other wrestlers will sometimes talk about Austin during other segments. It's been done before with other guys, so this shouldn't be anything new. Remember all the Rock/Hogan hype from last year?

I can't comment much on his ring work yet, since his NWO "match" was with a non-wrestler. (and his other physical confrontation was with 3MW) Contrast that to the Rock, who has had the benefit of working with Booker and Hurricane since his return. (and look at his Hogan match for comparison)

Now, I'm not starting a ROCKY SUX, AUSTIN RULZ argument here. I'm just pointing out some of the positives about Austin that seemed to get buried over personal biases or tired net cliches. I know that it's common to bury something right away if we don't like it, but I have the gut feeling that our opinion of Stone Cold will do a big 180 by the time April Fools rolls around.

Patience, my friends...

The main problem for Austin this time compared to the last time he returned is that there are few guys on RAW who can elevate Austin from the decent level to the good to great level like he had in 2001. The first few months Austin was back, his matches were subpar. Then he worked with Angle, Benoit and a pre crippled Trip, and he started to improve rapidly. Now, on the RAW roster, who is their that can do that? Trip is virtually worthless. Jericho? perhaps. RVD? doubtful. Steiner? Not unless the time machine goes back a dozen years. Booker? Lets see if he gets buried completely at Mania, and Booker is much like Austin in that he needs the other guy to lift the level. So, with no Angle to resurrect him this time, Austin will look like a diminished wrestler. But, that fits in the mold with most of the talent anyway.

Austin hasn't himself said "what" since the Invasion angle ended.

What he DOES do is, after each short, repetitive sentence, intentionally stop and wait for the crowd to say it. It's annoying and lame -- just like him.

He's just doing "what" he has to so people can hear him. If he doesn't pause, then half of his promo/interview will be drowned out by the audience saysing "what" all the time.

It isn't Austin that's annoying and lame, it's the crowd.

Yeah! Where's he get off, pausing when he ends a sentence?

Give me a break. The guy isn't encouraging the "what" any more. Hell, half the time he'd start talking again mid-"what". People were going to pull that when he came back, no matter what he did, blaming it on Austin is just a lame excuse to bash the guy.

I've enjoyed him so far. He hasn't blown me away but give him a few weeks to get back in the groove of things.

As for the "what" thing, he wasn't really playing to it because as his promo progressed the crowd got tired of chanting over Austin and most of them stopped to listen to what was going on.

Nate, you gotta be kidding me. I don't have a tape, so I'm paraphrasing, but does this ring a bell from last night?

You want me to shake your hand? (pause for "what")
Make up and be friends? (pause for "what")
Let bygones be bygones? (pause for "what")
Well you're starting to piss me off. (pause for cheers)
With your grubby little hand. (pause for "what")
Your stupid little haircut. (pause for "what")
Your stupid jacket. (pause for "what")
etc. , etc.

Now nobody, and I mean NObody, completely stops after each sentence like that. Is Austin just catching his breath? No? Then what's he stopping for?

one guess

Pretty good memory for someone totally bored with the man.

I agree that he initially started pausing after his sentences, but let's face it: The crowd's habits won't change overnight. I think it's smarter for him to slowly ween the crowd off of it, rather than expecting them to stop chanting cold turkey.

"I think it's smarter for him to slowly ween the crowd off of it, rather than expecting them to stop chanting cold turkey."

Well, seeing as how the man has been gone for more than half a year and the crowd still hasn't stopped, without him to provoke them and keep it up, I don't think the audience has any plans on going cold turkey anytime soon.
Although, while I don't like Austin for other reasons, the WHAT never bothered me "TOO" much, other than when idiots kept it up during the National Anthem.

Nate, please - You know what shea was saying. He pauses after every 4 or 5 words. And not in the "end of a sentence, time to start a new one" kind of way. You know that.

And secondly, I'm sorry guys---well actually I'm not sorry, but I Love What. Just because its got a life of its own and it doesn't seem to ever go away. In that way, I find it entertaining. I like seeing how long it can last.

I don't mind when people "What" during an Austin promo. I don't mind when people "What" during the promo of the guy Austin's fueding with. I *HATE* when they do it for the entire show, drowning out every heel promo, even if the guy has nothing to do with Stone Cold.

I think there is something totally amazing about "What?" I also think that only Steve Austin could have made it as popular as it is. It's a one-of-a-kind thing.

And I'm not too afraid about upcoming Austin matches. I don't think his quality matches in 2001 were entirely Benoit and Angle's fault. Sure, those stick out in our memory, but I also remember Austin making Spike Dudley look like a million bucks.

I think Austin will use his time away from the ring to tweak his work a bit, again. I think that, before his surgery in 1999, be was probably feeling a bit trapped by the popularity of his own style. When he started wrestling again in early 2001, he added a little more than just punchkickwhamstunner. I think he'll use the opportunity of the crowd being open to seeing what he can do, and he'll use it to change a little bit.

Say what you will about the man: he's nothing if not creative. I think he probably finds the spots that everyone wants to see just as stifling and obligatory as we do. And I think he'll keep doing them, but will satisfy his own creative bug by doing something — anything — else.

Agreed. That's the one thing I couldn't stand. When people "What" someone Austin is feuding with that's fine--I'm not the biggest fan of it, but fine, you're doing what the face in the feud wants you to do.

However, after Angle feuded with Austin, it followed him for a looooong time, even after he won the title a few months ago. Just let it drop, people.

I believe that "What" is on the line of "Puppies" its hear to stay, but nobody remembers that it was Road Dogg that said it first. What is just a entertaining way for the fans to piss off the heels.

I however, in the middle of Booker T promos, will be chanting "Who?"

You are so right Shea, Austin is just the LAMEST wrestler ever. Now forget that he basically saved the form of entertainment that we all supposedly enjoy,(now that would be a novel idea)he has also been creative w/ his character and despite long periods of time being away from the business he has evolved and remained at the top of his craft for quite awhile now. For all the gimmicks and new bloods and workrateaholics that are supposedly so enticing to "true" fans of wrestling,I'll take Austin anyday cause theres something charismatic about the guy, and when put in a good feud and in a good match w/ a quality opponent Austin is the WWE's most valuable and most compelling superstar, not to mention his appeal to casual fans and marks. And as far as the WHAT?? chants go, at least the crowd isnt sitting on its hands like when 3MW (3MinuteWasteoftime) comes out. And Austins promos are kick ass like the one you quoted...

LMFAO,like how many times have you thought those things about SleazyE yourself and the look on Bitchoffs face was so awesome and thats Austins gift, he is an everyman kind of performer the kinda guy who dont take no BS from anyone , this side of Austin is comic gold IMHO. And he and Rocky will get even better once the Hurricane and Booker angles are removed and its just them doing what they do best, putting asses in the seats and raising hell!!

Hoping someone can answer this for me... Is that a Blue Thunder Bomb he hits in that match? Or a Rydien Bomb? Or are they the same thing? Thanks in advance...
