AHHH! My PS2 isn't working. It won't read any discs and makes funny noises when it tries to. Where the hell do I bring it to get it fixed? I've found a couple places on the net hat I can send it in to, but they sound a little sketchy. Has anyone else ever had to get a system repaired? If so, where did you go and how much did it run ya? Thanks.

I've been having the same problem of late. It's apparently not all that uncommon. I'm not sure what to do to fix it in the long run. In the short run, using compressed air in the opening when the disc tray is out seems to get it to start reading things again. I'd assume it's something with the lens, but I don't know.

Try using a cd cleaner on it, that might help.

Or you could attempt to pull the ol' switch-a-roo. Though, I guess that's kinda like stealing...

Buy a new PSX2, replace the contents with the old one, send the old one back the next day. My friend tried it... and while I was taken really far aback... I realized that it worked... ... *coughs*

Though, that is a little EVIL, no?

No he didn't.... I was talking to him, and he said he'd LIKE to, but doesn't have the balls. I don't blame him.

My PS2 was a piece of garbage... It wouldn't play P1 games, and after about 3 weeks it ceased playing DVDs as well... I had SOME problems playing P2 games, but once I got it into a working groove, I simply traded it in, and got a GameCube instead. I wasn't going to take the chance of it permanantly breaking down and leaving me with the cost, having gotten nearly NO use out of it.

A friend of mine doesn't use his PS2 any longer for the same reason. His games take a good long while to be read, if they want to be read that day.

When I was trading my in, the guy joked that I was making a wise decision trading in my machine - that while the games on the GameCube are far inferior for the most part, at least I have a machine that doesn't run the risk of breaking down. Amen to that!

Well I have one friend who has owned her machine for over 2 years... She has yet to experience a single problem, and thinks we're all crazy for having experienced the trauma that comes with the purchase of a P2.

So take that for what it's worth... But it'll be a long time before I purchase a Sony product again.

Ha! I was actually thinking about trying that. My cousin tried that with his X-Box and pulled it off. I figure its probably best if I don't, though.

I tried using compressed air, but that didn't do anything. Gonan try and find some other cleaner for it, but if I can't or it doesn't help, I guess I'll have to send it in to Sony for repairs. Its too bad places like Best Buy can't fix them...

I'm having the same problem with my XBox lately. Won't play SHIT, and when it finally does, it freezes within an hour or two.

...but don't they scan the serial number on the unit when you buy the PS2 and keep the record so they know you aren't trying the switch technique?

They do here so I'm pretty much sure that they do in the US too what with it generally taking us about 6 months to get round to copying you kids.

I'm sure the dishonesty of it would be enough to stop all of us from ever being so unscrupulous anyway. :)

I don't know about that kind of switching. What I do know is that Wal-Mart is usually very nice about giving you new products for busted ones. As long as it doesn't look like it's been kicked around a lot, Wal-Mart might take it for you. Of course, I've only done this with games, so I don't know about actual consoles. Might not work if you don't have the box.

Wal-mart took down the serial number of my Gamecube on the receipt, and they looked at it when I took it in for an exchange.

The good thing about Wal-Mart is that they give you 90 days to exchange any game or system that is defective, and as long as it checks out - they don't really hassle you. I'd rather they check the serial number and not hassle me than take anything as long as the story checks out. I get pissed when people question me on a return, so it usually seems like I'm lying even when I'm not.

****OKay, quick tip that worked for me and my friend****

we bought ours the first day they came out, and this summer they started making whirring noises and refusing to read DVD's with lots of heavily packed/subdivided information on them (special features DVD's mostly).

Here's what we did...set it down horizontally...I swear to God, it's been 7 months, and we both haven't had any problems since. It still makes a little extra noise, but they read everything fine now.

I've heard this from a lot of people, keeping your PS2 in horizontal position is much better for the machine. Its when you store it vertical that problems start popping up.

DO NOT TRY the switching thing unless you are prepared to be arrested! My brother-in-law got talked into trying this with some hard drives by some "less than scrupulous" friends.

While they were "checking with the manager", the boys in blue showed up. $1,000+ dollars in fines, and a record, later he wishes he hadn't let himself be talked into this.

I'm not 100% pure myself, but I'd hate to see any fellow Wieners get arrested for trying to get a working game system.

My Playstation 2 has also been not working right for most of my games lately. I've tried the vertical thing and the CD cleaner and it still didn't work! But luckily Grand Theft Auto:VC works. Anyone know how much it is to get a PS2 repaired?

I like to talk up JRPGs here when I can. This is a unique case for me to do so. The PSP is a dying system. However, tons of RPGs have been released in Japan that have not made their way over here.
