Even when Sesame Street went down the shitter (HALF AN HOUR for Elmo to talk in baby talk to kids? I wouldn't let my kid near that crap), Mr. Rogers stuck it out and kept to his guns for all that time, basically doing the same routine. It may have been a little dull at times (even as a young kid in the early-mid 80's I figured that out), I still watched it all the time.

Unlike this jackass Michael Jackson, who puts on this facade of "I love kids, and it's nothing sexual" while trolling around sleeping with little kids, then paying people not to say anything, Mr. Rogers was a genuine good guy, which is rare today.

      Here's to Fred Rogers.

OK- now I am the first to advocate "respect for the dead," but I am definitly not one to romanticize a dead person. Wasn't there a huge stink several years ago about Mr. Rogers and Child Molestation?

I watched Mr. Rogers as a kid, and I loved it. But to suggest that Mr. Rogers is UNLIKE Micheal Jackson, when he had similar accusations and suspicions hanging over his head is unfair. Just because the guy is dead does not mean he was necessarily a saint.

    That is all...

Goddammit, Pool-Boy, you are a fucking moron. Could you ever, just once, make some vague attempt to get the facts straight before you post? Just once.

Honestly, the man just died, a man who meant a hell of a lot to a hell of a lot of people, and you just toss out some mindless bullshit Internet rumor that you heard once and completely slander a good man's memory.

Please, in the future, check your fucking facts once in a while. Thank you.

No, it was definitly Mr. Rogers. I remember the hoards of jokes that resulted from those accusations.

And Torch, there is nothing disrespectful about telling the truth about a man's life. Hey, I admitted myself, I ENJOYED Mr. Rogers as a child, and thought the show was a tremendous thing for children. That alone makes him deserve praise for the work of his life.

I was merely pointing out that while this is true, I do not think dragging Michael Jackson into this, asking why he could not be more like Mr. Rogers in regards to children, was respectful at all. I was just pointing out that Mr. Rogers faced similar allegations.

I will not "shut the fuck up." I am 100% in favor of memorializing the guy for his works. But if there is one thing I cannot stand it is the sudden sainthood of all recently deceased peoples. There WERE child molestation allegations aimed at Mr. Rogers. To the best of my knowledge, these were never satisfied. I do not think it is fair to anyone to suddenly whitewash that part of his life and take this newly creates sceplechure of human virtue and compare it to another, likely innocent but wholly fucked up in the head man in an effort to damn.

"Mr. Roger's Neighborhood?" A tremenous contribution to the lives of not only all of us, but to children now and likely for years to come. Mr. Roger's the man? Who really knows. Maybe he was really guilty of those accusations. Maybe he is indeed innocent, and simply a victim of societies natural suspicions of a man who works closely of children. The point is that none of us know the truth, and painting the man as a paragon of virtue posthumously is tasteless, and disrespectful to his memory and his life.

We all know of his work. Memorialize him FOR THAT. None of us know the true nature of the man, so we should not even speculate, and we damned sure should not raise him above the living just because he is gone.

Respectful behavior upon someone's death has two boundaries, not just one. We all know that it is disrespectful for someone to bouce in here and start telling every Mr. Roger's joke they ever heard, or bash the man in any way. It is just as disrespectful to over-glorify the man, and make grand pronouncements about the virtues of someone we never met.

It is not disrespectful, however, to tell the truth about the man and the events of his life. Are we just supposed to forget all the potentially bad stuff just because he is dead? Isn't that just as much a part of him as the good?

What if you were accused of sodomizing your little sister, but then a jury cleared your name? It was absolutely unfounded, but some meathead who had it out for you decided to slander your name.
Wouldn't it be a shame if, even after you were proven innocent, people kept throwing it in your face and calling you "sister raper?"
Then you died, and the wrestling message board wanted to show their respect and praise you for your dignity, but Parts Unknown kept saying, "YEAH, BUT REMEMBER WHEN CRAIG MOLESTED HIS SISTER!?!?" Wouldn't that suck?

When you eulogize someone at a funeral, are you careful not to whitewash the dead person's name? Do you make sure to throw in the bad parts so the family won't get to caught up in the moment and diefy the dead?
No. You are respectful and mournful. Not on the Internet, however...anonymity allows you to be your true self, I suppose.

Can we stop bickering about what is and isn't appropriate and get on with remembering a man that touched us all and left us today?

Pool-boy, the point of this thread is not to glorify Mr. Rogers, nor is it to memorialize him. The point is for those of us on this board who were affected by him to remember how we were affected and to share our grief. This is not a statement on the kind of man Fred Rogers was, because beyond the television persona, we'll never know. At best all we have are allegations and hearsay. There's no need for certain things to be brought up, especially since all it does is change the topic from remembering the person in question to arguing about HOW to remember someone.

Of course, I don't think the point of this thread should be to bash the living (why is Michael Jackson even being mentioned in the first place?). This isn't a thread for judgment, be it of the living or the dead.

Maybe the next time someone unfortunately passes away, can we just remember the person, and leave the skeletons in the closet, at least for a little while?

Mr. Rogers Neighborhood wasn't among my favorites as a kid, but I can't say I didn't watch it regularly, and I can't say I won't want my kids to watch it when the time comes. It was a hallmark in children's television programming, and Mr. Rogers will be missed.

In an effort not to drag this out (because I do wholly agree with Eddie), I have but one response to that - OJ Simpson.

This is hardly a funeral. I agree that at a funeral, the bad is usually washed over in favor of the good. But more good stuff is not "made up" to fill in the spaces.

Grrr... it is not the place or time to argue about this. All I am saying is, eulogize the man, and leave Micheal Freaking Jackson out of it.

Well, when Pool-Boy comes back, I hope that he knows that I didn't mean to get him banned or nothing. I was just angrily lashing out at a perceived out of place post (and true, the Michael Jackson mentioning was also out of line).

The day of someone's death is not the day to bring up allegations, especially if they were not proven in court. You know, innocent before guilty and all that.

I just hope that we can all remember how Mr. Rogers and his show affected us, and leave the crap out of it. So in that effort:

I now remember that I learned something specific from him. Mr. Rogers was in the kitchen and taught me how to make juiced ice-cubes. You know, filling up the ice-cube tray with your favorite juice, wrapping the tray tightly with saran wrap, and then sticking toothpicks into each "cube." After some time allowed for freezing, you had a juice cube.

I made those many times after that episode and I just might have to make some tonight, in honor of Fred. RIP Mr. Rogers, you will always be remembered.

Here's an interview he did last November - I actually ran to get a blank tape and record it when I heard the repeat.

Just listening to him makes you smile, and he was just as genuine with the adult audience as with the kids.

When I die, I want that man as my neighbor.

Mister Rodgers was a fixture of my mornings every day as a kid, and it's just a sad thing to think that he won't be around any longer.

RIP Fred.

I had been having a crappy day to begin with and then I read this news....I just lost an Uncle to cancer which made this even worse.

Later in the day, I heard the start of a radio story and was getting prepared to be steamed. It was a quite from someone at the National Enquirer...basically saying..."We've got a file on Fred Rogers".

But then he went on to say, "...and it's the only one that's completely empty."

Granted...it's the Enquirer, but still a fairly classy comment considering the source.

RIP Rev. Fred Rogers

Of course, all us Canadians will always have that connection between the two...Mr. Dressup was from Pittsburgh, and started as a puppeteer on Rogers' show.

Greatest thing was the actual enjoyment Mr. Rogers got from the Eddie Murphy "Mr. Robinson" skits on SNL, according to interviews...pure class from a man that helped raise a generation of kids, including me.

What sad news. I'm sure right now he's changing sweaters and shoes somewhere nice.

When I was a kid I was always amazed that he had a stoplight in his house. A stoplight! That was so cool for a 4 year boy. To this day, when I think about Mr. Rogers, I always think about that stoplight...and smile.

RIP

That's funny...my younger brother always felt that same way. That following Christmas my parents actually managed to get one for him, and he was SO excited. We still have it today.

For anyone with a TV nearby, ABC is running their interview with him from a couple years back right now (11:50 EST...or if you're on the west coast, it'll be on soon). It had an excellent recap of his career. I missed that part, which sucks because it was very well done, but I am taping the replay of the interview, I may vidcap it later and put it up here if anyone missed it.

If anyone on the west coast could cap the career retrospective and put it up it would be awesome.

First Maurice "The Rocket" Richard (my hero growing up), then Mr. Dress up, now Mr. Rogers. That's the problem with kids today, no role models like those guys. There's no one left who plays for the love of the game, with tenacity and resolve, no one who is able to make something out of puppets, and no one who shows that being a good neighbor can be cool.

Also, by far my favorite line on SNL; "This is how we answer the door in my neighborhood....WHO IS IT????!!!!?!?!?!"".

"Maybe one day Vorrik, but not today. You really should have thought twice about this gambit of yours--especially if you didn't have the resources to pull it off in the first place.
"We have no intentions of surrendering--not now, not ever. You may win the occasional battle against us, Vorrik, but the Empire always will strike back. That I promise you".

My mom emailed me and told me about this. What a shame. I, too, grew up watching his stuff.

Highlights were (of course), trolley going into the land of make believe, the bitchy witch puppet, and the video specials where they would visit some cool factory.

The only time I ever saw him get flustered was when he was trying to make a rainbow. I think it involved, shining some sort of light while he sprayed water in front of it. After a few tries, no rainbow. But Mr. Rogers, ever the consumate professional, just went, "Well.... that didn't work, did it?"

And that was it, he went on.

It's too bad that some people, like at my office, had to make snide comments today like "He always creeped me out." Just because he was a soft spoken guy who liked kids doesn't automatically mean there's anything sinsister going on.

My best friend is one tough individual who's been through hell and back several times, and he wept like a baby when we talked about it yesterday. He said ...

"When I was a kid, my parents split up and no one was home, but at least I had Mister Rogers every day."

... now who's going to step up and teach common sense to the youngsters of today? Who's going to fill Mr. Rogers' sneakers?

No one, I fear.

When I was a kid, I remember watching that show a lot...and even listening to one of the many record albums he put out. I dunno if I've ever heard anything so soothing.

Here's hoping PBS re-runs his stuff until eternity...it'd be a shame if little kids won't have the advantage of watching Fred Rogers, and being better people for it in the long run.

Survey says: there's one less good guy on the planet now. Rest in peace, Mr. Rogers. You earned it.
