I think there was a quickie George Harrison tribute at the beginning of the Grammy Awards last year, iirc. Not that that should prevent anyone from doing a genuine heartfelt tribute regardless of time passed as opposed to a cobbled-together one that comes off as hollow, forced, self-important and insincere. I can't believe Kurt liked it (mtv.com).

Eminem/the Roots added a bit of "Rock Box" to their performance, which felt like an appropriate and genuine tribute, not a "we the academy are going to shove how important we think this artist (the Clash) is down your throat" tribute. Also consider how the Clash never won a Grammy until this year after Joe Strummer died, and that was for Long Form Music Video, which is of course what they're best known for. (No they're not.) Oh what a brave choice.

Could Sheryl Crow be any more of an event whore? Seriously, that girl will perform ANYWHERE. Awards shows, sporting events, legend tributes.... the list goes on and on.
Don't get me wrong, I like her and her music isn't too bad. I just can't stand seeing her mug on every high-profile entertainment event.

Steph is big, but so is Dom DeLuise. And really, who doesn't enjoy "Fatso" now and again?

And while I recognized No Doubt's Tony Kanal on bass, who was the drummer?

FooFighters.com identifies the drummer:

Dave [Grohl] will join Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Steven Van Zandt of the E Street Band, Tony Kanal of No Doubt, and Pete Thomas of the Attractions at the GRAMMY Awards to pay tribute to the Clash in fitting high-volume, high-energy fashion with an incredible one-night-only supergroup jam.

That was Elvis` drummer.

You're right!

I wonder why MTV incorrectly said "Rock Box," too (mtv.com) - when I heard it Sunday I thought they might have done both, but I wasn't listening too closely...and I couldn't Google up a "King of Rock" reference.

BUT! Wasn't the turntable playing "Rock Box" at the VERY end? Maybe that's the confusion. Actually, I'm the only one confused here, I think. ;-)

I actually just got done watching it (I went out for NWO instead), so I'll add some random thoughts:

Avril didn't look excited to be there at ALL. It wasn't just her performance that was unenthusiastic, every time the camera cut to her, she looked bored out of her mind or pissed off. I think she was just mad that she wouldn't get any pretty statues.

The crowd was DEAD. That was worse than a dead wrestling crowd. Nobody was really getting worked up over anything, and I can't blame them, as nothing really stood out as really awesome.

I was kinda sad to see that Michelle Branch didn't get her Grammy on TV, of course I'm a fan of hers. In fact, somewhere around here I still have the demo CD that her label sent my station.

"Hot in Herre" was terrible live.

Eminem's performance was solid. He usually does well on live shows, though.

I'm a big No Doubt fan too. Glad to see them.

Simon and Garfunkle and Coldplay really salvaged the night for me.

Robin Williams certainly should not be getting acceptance speech time on a music awards show.

I wasn't too into either "The Rising" (wasn't a fan of the album, either) or "London Calling" (I liked the sentiment, but the performance seemed...off).

I like the song "Landslide" and don't really think Dixie Chicks butchered it, so it's ok with me.

Norah Jones deserved the awards she won, but it will be interesting to see if she can keep up any sort of momentum with it. It was something of a guilty pleasure hearing the crowd all yell "BRUCE" in unison and the presenters read off the other guy's name. Bwahahahaha.

The presenters this year were, by and large, God awful. Watching the show (and I realize that seeing it on tape affects some of this, but not THIS badly) was painful at times. Where in the world were the production values?

That's pretty much everything I've got.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm sick of the "Anti-War" stuff. Not that I'm completely against the sentiment, but I really want to throttle some of those people. You're celebrities and we don't really care what you think about the state of the world. Please just sing your song, present your award, and get off stage. Thanks.

Oh, because that guy likes to get important stuff wrong!

I really could have sworn I heard the DJ playing "Rock Box" toward the end too, though, but I was probably paying about 10% of the attention you were. So if it was only "King of Rock," it's a fair cop. Either way it was a more affectionate tribute than that Clash crap.

That reminds me - did ANYBODY ever figure out what was written on Coldplay Chris Martin's hand? Given his "Bush will kill us all" (paraphrased) statement at the Brits I was sure it'd be something cool I could make fun of.

Also, it was nice the way the producers made sure we got a good look at Avril from behind so we wouldn't have to suffer seeing "ROCK ON" written on her jacket's lining.

Also (2), I will try to add "agreeance" to my vocabulary and use it at least once a day.

If you want to see for yourself, it's pretty clear when he "adjusts his mic" in the first few seconds after the orchestra starts up.

You're welcome, nonetheless.

A note to Fred Durst:

You're a moron, just read the name in the envelope and shut up.

And a big WHOO-HOO to Nora Jones. And thank jebus Avril didn't when any Grammys and that totally uninspired performance she gave really didn't help anyone's opinion of her.

He said that "This war needs to go away". I'm not against people making anti-war statement but i'd like it to someone rather than Fred Durst.

He probable just being his usual poser self and be in the anti-war in crowd.

He also said that he knew that everyone was in "agreeance", thus taking the American Lexicon to thrilling heights.

Sigh, another year gone by, another year the true Mozart and God of music, Wesley Willis gets shafted at the oscars. Then of course in a world where Batman Whupped my Ass, Rock and Roll McDonalds, and Cut that Mullet didn't win grammys--what deserves too?

You mean the Grammys. While a Wesley Willis Action Movie (complete with Wesley carrying the script around in his big notebook, and of course lots of devastating headbutts~!) is an idea I've been longing to see for quite some tiome, it hasn't happened yet, so they can't really be blamed for not giving him an Oscar. B^)

Other than that, it was a kick-ass post.

I suppose I'm out of it here, but WHO is Wesley Willis and WHAT do the Oscars have to do with winning a Grammy?

I'm too lazy to go and look him up.

Except they released two albums WITHOUT Jim. I know everyone tries to forget that, but I have a bootleg CD of "Other Voices" and "Full Circle" right here. It's not GREAT, but it's not BAD.
