I did enjoy it, despite my worries about it after the matches were announced. The lack of any worthwhile wrestling in the first 45 minutes of the show or so would have had me going crazy, and not in a good way.

Was the helicopter footage in the opening segment the same one that was used in both the DX video and the Raw on the Roof opener?

I'm thinking the Rock's switcheroo has more to do with location. Toronto this week, where he was boo-ed in the past, and then Long Island next week, another locale where he was heavily boo-ed out at a signature card. A good way to continue to build Rock's bitterness.

Ross did a good job trying to cover for the major botch in the Jackie/Jazz match.

Was there any point to the Test at GGW thing, considering the Test/Stacy dissention lasted a couple segments?
Stacy is actually becoming a decent bumper and seller. I don't think I want to see her in-ring offense anytime soon though.

-Bischoff/ Rock interview- DeadCowWalking looking horrible, banned Austin, errr but the Rock really stepped up and saved the show. How off the charts was Rock tonight. He was great on SD last Thursday, but he was one step beyond tonight. Boy was her working hard to get every single heel heat he can generate.

-Jazz vs. Jackie- Ouch, love Victoria but she needs Stevie to do the commentating. And when did Original Jackie morph into Jackie Gayda. Her headscissor in the last 3 months move has a less hit ratio then Jeff Hardy running the rail. I don't know who's fault it is in the two missed spots but Jackie has had bad matches with both Jazz and Molly recently. Last thing the division needs is an unover veteran being the weak link of the division.

Ahahaha OH! It's Trish and I'm really glad to see her. But I'm little disappointed in her payback. I'd rather her have A) Be along side Molly fending off the 2 heels and giving Molly some legit face rub or B) Come in and totally go nuts. It started strong with the Thesz press and the stiff kick to Victoria. But then it went quickly to a rolling around cat fight with Jazz. I expected Trish to break out the violence or even a new move (maybe a cool new kick). The rollaround/ref break apart seems pretty unimaginative especially after the amazing way she went out. Being off a month I thought the pay back would be sweeter. It was good and saved the segment but could have been better... Well atleast Lilian got in the ring and welcomed Trish back with a tight hug and kiss. Naa didn't happen well not in the ring atleast. Actually in all honestly Lilian looked like she had an extra glow about her tonight

-Kane vs. Storm- Storm looked really good this match. Can't believe it only was 2 and a half minutes. They did a lot of good in only 2 minutes. Good match.

-Booker/Steiner v. Orton/Batista- Ha JR calling out rasist Torontonians for hating Steiner because he's got an U.S pattern on his tights. Is this the same city that chanted "We Want Angle" during the entire main event of the Angle/Benoit vs. Guerreros when they wrestled for the SD tag tournament. Some good heel work by Flair's boys, and seeing Flair run around is always enjoyable.

-Stacy/Test vs. Jericho/Christian- Really shouldn't Test be the one wearing the cheap pop home crowd outfit, not like Stacy needs the help, but saying that Stacy looked really cute in hers... Agree or disagree with the actions that took place on Stacy, and I didn't think it was over the line. It got some real sympathy on Stacy and having the Toronto crowd actually chant for HBK. Jericho Walls always look great when he does it on women, why can't he do that with men. I remember an intergender match that Y2J did the old LionTamer (WCW style) on Trish, and this week with Stacy's long legs it looked extra viscous.

-Nowinski vs. Jeff Hardy- Yes Nowinski and he's got a Mic double yes! But it's not working Oh NO. But quick minded Lilian, quickly got on her feet on passed the another mic over to Nowinski, Lilian is ON tonight (second only to Rock). Nowinski says Jeff is lame (You don't have to go to harvard to know that). Jeff beats Nowinski in 13 seconds which is an unlucky number, but Jeff is strange so it's lucky for him. But then he continued to beat Nowinski (hey that's what I wanted Trish to do) and got a reverse decision. Haven't seen that in a while. Does this make Jeff complex again.

-Lawler vs. Morley- Now this is irony. The man who forced annoying chants to many women match especially a certain Canadian female wrestler. Now has to wrestle in Canada with an annoying chant being said in his match. It's kind of annoying isn't it you a*shole

-BattleRoyal- More Lilian the great, remember all those names and weights, MVP of the night... I hate battle Royals, I was never a fan of them. I doesn't help when Jericho throws himself over the top right away and RVD doesn't even reach the mid way point. Rock was great in it and doing play by play was pretty funny and Rock was so on tonight he seemed like he couldn't do any wrong tonight. Great to see Booker win.

-other stuff- Did I mention Lilian, I'm glad the WWE had cameras on her tonight on a couple of occasions, she looked so hot, sexiest women in the WWE IMO... GGW was as dumb as I expected... I'll be honest I don't know what to think of the Goldust thing... Rock with Hurricane was awesome. I was laughing out loud literally through the entire thing. The Rock is great.

Tonight just showed how great The Rock is. It could have been a total disaster without Austin, and the second The Rock came out he made it fun. Like some said he put Booker over in the ring, and had a great skit with Hurricane that Hurricane looked good afterwards. Rock is such a team player. I'm down at Rock at times but he really shows tonight when he's on there might be no one who can touch him. Oh yeah HHH who? never wondered or cared where he was... I must say overall very good show, really enjoyed it and it looks like it can only go up.

Random Raw Thoughts:

Rock's entrance video was awesome. His promo RULED.

Funny how JR said that Steiner got booed because he had "US" tights. He got booed in Boston too.

That "You screwed Bret" chant was pretty loud last night.

Good to hear H-Blockx again.

That Rock promo with The Hamburglar (Hurricane) ruled as well.

Good to see Booker T win the battle royal. Rock's facial expressions were funny in the battle royal.

Overall, between the awesomeness of Heel Rock, Booker T winning twice, and no HHH, this was the best RAW in quite some time. Only drawback was no Austin.

jesus gavintzu, it was a good raw and if you compare to any raw since 2003 started, id say a great raw in comparision.
best of year thus far with potential of many more and nowhere to go but up. when they actually put and effort and you're goingon about and irish wip and the rock jumping is worng.

personally with rock "i can do what i want , hollywood attiude" i think is the best reason to have him on raw. i cant think of a better reason to why he's on the show isnce, vince will let him do so.

many many battle royals end aburbtly, always have. roayl rumble endings are somewhat more climatic. i dotn remeber brock doing anything extrodinary to win rumble last month to go on for title shot. when they make an effort to do good show u shouldnt pick apart things when they just arnt there.

btw: they said last battle royal was won by owen in 95. if i recall wasnt there one in summer 96 ( a good one too) the was won by ahmed johnson?

Yup. It was (taped) at the post IYH:International Incident RAW taping. Ahmed won a chance at the heavyweight title at the next live RAW, post Summerslam.

But, Ahmed got injured for what was the first of umpteen times during his career, and, naturally it never took place.

I came on this board this morning expecting horn dogs everywhere to be excited over Victoria's accidental exposure last night. (DJ Ran, I'm looking in your direction) Alas, the only screen captures I could find were grown-up shots of the Goonies cast. Sad...
Good stuff last night. I'm thinking Rock/Austin will be the main event of WM. If not, they could face a similar situation as last year with Jericho/HHH following Rock/Hogan.

1. Steiner got booed. Oh yeah, JR, it's because he has a tiny American flag on one leg of his tights. But maybe he was right, I mean, Lance Storm got a pretty big pop, coming out with the Maple Leaf and all.

2. I didn't know whether to laugh or cringe at Stacy's selling of the Walls. Although I suppose "OW OW OW OW" is better than Jackie's selling: " ... " as she tries to get to the ropes with what almost looks like a smile on her face.

3. Goldust: I was suprised at how tastefully done that was. Something inside me says it can't last though.

4. Jeff's conflicted again. What was the point of having him go face last week? All I can think of is that his role last week was originally going to be done by Test.

5. Speaking of Test, boy that video sucked. Seeing his goofy face all over the place.

6. Booker wins. I wish Jericho had gone under the ropes when he left, so he could get all angry next week, and he and Booker could have a real #1 contenders match. But I'm going to hope that they're saving that for the PPV after Wrestlemania, when Booker defends his World Heavyweight Championship (hey, a person can hope).

7. I must have missed that Victoria exposure. Luckily I taped the show, so I'll go back and look again.

As far as GGW goes, I don't care if Test was surrounded by 100,000 girls, with his personality, he couldn't attract a fly even if he stood in a mountain of sh*t. Stacy is supposed to be the marketing supervisor or something like that. How could she not know what GGW stand for? Isn't it the marketer's job to learn more about what his/her client's job? I'm sorry, but a lover's spat is as important as a fart in a hurricane if she only went by initials!

Well, I challenged the WWE to prove me wrong about Booker getting the WM shot...and they complied the very same night. Wow. I've gotta think carefully about when to use this power again. B^)

I'm loving the Booker push. And now people are talking about face Booker vs. heel Jericho for the strap a little down the road...I don't know if there's any way that wrestling could make me happier than that. Well, men's wrestling anyway. B^}

Everyone's already said that Rock was gold on the mic last night, and the thing with Hurricane rocked. Well, they're quite right!

I don't think anyone's mentioned this yet, though: it seemed to me that Kane was playing the heel in a big way during the battle royal, as he spent most of his time not only attacking faces, but in particular attacking his two most recent "little buddies", RVD and Hurricane. Of course, JR and JL were completely oblivious to this, but I was thinking that that's where he was going.

Aside from a few things, Raw was still just a "blah" show. The show felt a lot better than it actually was, probably due to +Rock and -HHH.

--Book going to WM to challenge for the belt is good. Whether or not he gets to go over remains to be seen, but the mere possibility gives me hope.

--Rock was *gold* in every segment. Face Rock was so boring and unentertaining, but Heel Rock ranks up there w/ Heel Austin on the goodness scale. Especially...

--...the Hurricane/Rock segment. Awesome stuff, and then he goes out and puts him over briefly in the battle royal. The crowd popping huge for that was great, too. Hopefully, "somebody" was using his night off taking notes on putting people over.

--Damn, Trish was looking *smoking* hot in her run-in last night.

Other than that stuff, a pretty "blah" show. Better than recent weeks, but not by much.

They're doing the smart thing (business wise) in not giving the folks Austin just yet on free TV. Having him come back next week, hype the shit out of it, but give us Rock in the interm for our amusement.

I love how the entire IWC does a complete 180 within one show for the Rock, spending months bashing him and talking about how boring he is and how he should retire once and for all, only to have him come back and get everyone to kiss his ass again. Whether he's a babyface or a heel, this guy is everything wrestlers should aspire to be. I hope Hunter was taking notes.

The wrestling sucked, but it appears that they are finally getting their shit together. Elevate new stars, getting away from tired old fueds and formulas, and giving the people what they want.

Raw Notes:

My cable TV preview told me I’d see the Aftermath of No Way Out AND Stone Cold Steve Austin. I even called up my buddies, former wrestling fans, and told them to watch the show to see Austin. No Way I want to shell out $35 a month for my own PPV. At least we get the Rock to save the show, but I still wanted Austin. Stop Lying to Me, WWE.

Two black women fight and I switch channels. I know why nobody cares about the women’s matches, it’s not just the sucky wrestling, it’s that they have no personality. I was watching Joe Millionaire instead and they gave every chick their own character. There’s the bitchy one, the slutty one, the psycho-Fatal Attraction one, the classy bon-chic one, and the shy one. In wrestling there is only the pretty one and the bitchy one. And in Joey Millions, they gave Zora, the shy one, the additional trait of being a nature lover. They had forest creatures suddenly appear to Disney music upon her entrance in addition to her horse whisperer quality. That is how you get people to invest in a story.

I liked all the Rock stuff, esp. with Hurricane.

The Golddust interview was too stupid to be offensive. At least they could’ve made him like Electro and given him the power to electrify his opponents. That would’ve been cool.

I tune back for the ending because I love Battle Royals. In fact I was reminded of their last Battle Royal on regular TV with the Alliance. Booker T won that one also to get a shot at the WCW Title. That was a great TV show, check out http://slashwrestling.com/smackdown/011025.html
and see for yourself.

The main event and the Rock saved the show. I liked it, but not enough to stop me from flipping channels during all the filler.

8. Right before the King's match, J.R. called him "Jerry". That sounded so weird all of a sudden. J.R. always calls him "King." Jerry is one of those names that sounds bad when you get older too.
9. I saw that same preview that you did, skorpio, even though I'm watching on DirecTV. If I recall correctly, it said "Aftermath of No Way OUT; Stone Cold Steve Austin". I thought it was fairly amusing when they said he didn't show up, but I figured they never actually said he would appear, they said that he would be mentioned. Underhanded, but not necessarily incorrect.
10. When Lawler said his lap was the best seat in the house, I was hoping Stevie said, "Ok, can I sit there then?" Hilarity would ensue.
11. I think Batista and Orton came out to Flair's music because Orton probably has his own music (which they will debut sometime soon), and it wouldn't have been right to come out to Batista's. The only time someone comes out to someone's elses music is when they are lower on the card than their partner (i.e. Jericho/Christian, Booker/Goldust, yes, even Molly/Jacqueline, sadly enough), and Batista and Orton are at about the same spot.

If people are doing a 180 on Rock, it's because he did spend months in a rut, trapping himself in weird promos about the body parts of wildlife preserve animals. If that was The Rock who showed up last night, in an Austin-less show, it would have been a major disaster for WWE.

Instead, he revamped himself again and he's clearly got a new energy and take on what he's doing. I would argue that this isn't the old heel Rock character and that he's actually doing something different, something I haven't seen anyone do before. He's a heel who actually acknowledges that there are such things as heel turns. There's the surface idea of "Toronto, you booed me last year, so screw you!", sure, but he's doing something beyond that by addressing the crowd about how he and they will interact directly. He keeps giving the crowd an out, asking if they REALLY want to boo him, and if so, they'll get the bad version of his character and they won't be able to react to him the same way. It's a post modern heel turn and he's pulling it off.

Not booking Austin for this show - thus running the entire sweeps period of their flagship show without the guy who's probably the biggest star they have despite talking about him the whole time, and the natural expectation that of course he'd be there the night after he made his returns - was incredibly stupid. There's no logical reason for them to have done it based on what they had booked and it should have done some serious damage to them by doing yet another week of disappointing people who were tuning in to see Stone Cold again. It's insane.

As it turned out, though, Rock was so on and so tuned into his character, the state of the audience and the rest of the Raw cast, there ended up not being room for Austin on the show. They couldn't have had the Austin-Rock confrontation yet and still have had time for Rock to put everything on the table and re-organize the direction of the show like he did. I don't think there's any way they could have known anyone could put together a turn-around performance like Rock did, so I'm not letting them off the hook for such an odd and potentially terrible decision, but damn if the guy didn't make it work every time he was on screen.

The rest of the show, when Rock wasn't on screen, was pretty uneventful and downright boring. It just goes to show what the right person in the top spot can do if he wants to apply his talent and position. This is what HHH should have been doing in the past year with those never-ending episodes dedicated to him, interacting positively with everybody in his path and making it seem important. This is what people wanted to see if he was going to take up all that time and focus. Rock managed to work in the guitar from his appearance on Letterman with the Hurricane's segment to add more to the "too good for wrestling" character while giving Hurricane a chance to show the first hint of the actual character he's supposed to be since the Invasion. Rock's reaction to getting eliminated by Booker is perfect. It wasn't rage at being eliminated by someone beneath him. It wasn't a "well-uh, I beat you-uh a thousand times before-uh" that would undermine the positive Booker just gained, as we've seen people do before. It just seemed like a natural extension of the character he built up earlier in the show. I really want to see him interact with other people on the show, epsecially someone like Jericho, to see what the dynamic will be now.

There seem to be very few guys who can carry a show alone, and Rock and Austin, given a motivation, are the very best at it. I hope they can put together a show that can keep up with them next week.

I agree with everything you've said, and that makes the next point all the more disappointing: After this run as a heel through Mania and maybe even Backlash, the Rock is gone. Maybe not forever, but at least for a considerable and regular amount of time until the movie roles potentially dry up. And I've never been on the anti-Rock bandwagon, so I think it's safe for me to say that we're losing one hell of a talented entertainer from the regular roster. Whereas I enjoy Booker T, Jericho, Benoit, and Lesnar, I don't think any of them, as future stars, have the goods like Rocky does. The man is out of control fantastic.

I want to thank Pescado and SSS for the video and audio of the Rock. Of course I am a little upset that no one is showing me the Victoria "exposure." I was at a concert last night, so I missed what sounded like the most entertaining Raw of the past few months.

You know, you guys should thank me for missing the show. I have watched Raw for the better part of 8 years, hardly missing any shows. But EVERY TIME I miss a show, something noteworthy happens. ECW and WCW merging? Missed it. Flair's return to the WWE (on my B-day no less)? Missed it. The Rock entertaining millions with a heel act and interacting with the Hurricane? Missed it. Thanks a lot WWE!
