This weekend I pre-ordered Wind Waker and got my copy of OoT. I never played it before because I didn't have an N64, so this is going to be a fun experience. All I can say is this game is HARD so far. I wandered around for two hours looking for the first sword! Then I wasted even more time trying to beat the Deku Tree (how was I supposed to know Deku sticks are flammable?!). I'm assuming the original instruction booklet was much more detailed because this has been quite frustrating. Does this game get a bit less...how do I say it...dinky later on? All this fairy stuff and King James English and giant trees and little elves...YUCK. Hopefully there is some sinister stuff lurking ahead or this is the cheesiest Zelda EVAR.

Don't worry. The Deku tree is the only one that speaks in Ye Olde English. And the game gets a pretty good progression going on. So while it's not the darkest game out there, the plot is certainly mature enough. I'd suggest that if you get stuck somewhere, to ask about it here. If you go look at Gamefaqs, you may inadvertantly spoil something.
Because everyone who's anyone has already beatn OOT

No matter how obvious the trap, you can't complete the game unless you fall into it.
I loved OoT... and it definitly gets a LOT better. Wait until the "False Ending" (see the How to beat any RPG thread... heh heh), and things really start to pick up there.
If I were you, and I got stuck, I would check out the online strategy guide. I checked it out (I beat the game on N64, so I was not too worried about Spoilers) and the way they have it layed out it awesome. You basically go through a tree of menues to get exactly where the information you are looking for is. Avoiding spoilers at that point is up to your own willpower.
Play through the game... you will see it gets a great deal more interesting. Personally, I am enjoying it the second time through, only having a few MINOR controller issues (I miss my N64 controller). I am hoping they come out with Majora's Mask at some point for the Gamecube now too!

Majora's mask was one hard fucking game. If anyone is having trouble with OOT, you'll just love Majora's Mask.
I'm really frustrated because I think I missed a bunch of stuff at one point in the game, and I don't think I can go back and fix it all now. Has anyone finished this all the way through? I don't want to read the spoilers, but I kinda want to know if I should start over at this point.
Ugh. Dammit. I knew I should have copied my save file at some point.
Willful ignorance of science is not commendable. Refusing to learn the difference between a credible source and a shill is criminally stupid.
If you want to go back and do something as a child again, I am almost certain that at any point, you can go back to the Temple of Time and put the sword back. You will eventually get to do that anyway- so yes, you will have the chance to go back, and you should not need to restart... You need to go back and forth anyway when you start doing the really serious Gold Skulltulla (however the hell you spell it) hunting...
And hell yeah Majora's Mask is way harder, but it is so involved it is totally worth it. It makes OoT look as complicated as FFI in my opinion...

No, it was fine. That was what I was going to ask in a PM anyway, but if I hadn't already been there (like some of the other people in this post) it might have been frustrating.

Just finished the Fire Temple, now trying to beat Zora Temple, or whatever the heck they call it, I can't remember...
With Triple H knocked out, Booker runs over and pins him causing the crowd to erupt and banners and confetti to float down from the sky in celebration.

Does anyone think they're gonna sell t-shirts with "Evolution" on them? What, are they gonna have a picture of a hunched-over ape slowly evolving into Hunter?
OOT was maddening for me because I struggled and struggled to beat the Fire Temple for the longest time, and eventually gave up on the game because I couldn't. Later on, I played it again and realized that the obstacle that had kept me from ultimately finishing the game was a simple jump that I didn't think I could make. I never attempted the jump, hence about 2 months of frustration.
Guru, not mentioning specifics but there is a pretty good chance that you might have harmed your chances at finding everything in the game...it happened to me once and I just started over.
I'm still working on OoT from one or two years ago. It took me about five hours to figure out how to beat the Deku Tree. But right now I'm stuck in some forest temple...I'm having a very hard time beating those damn skeletons that regenerate themselves...

They key there is speed- you have to hit them fast and kill them all at the same time-

Last night I reached the part where you have to swim down under the water and hit a switch. Seems simple, right? After about an hour of mashing the A button, hitting it in sequence, hitting it in patterns, hitting it in rhythm and hitting it as fast as I could, I still could not dive down and hit the switch! I threw the controller down in frustration and gave up for the night. Then I read the instruction manual: "hold A to dive." I guess I'm just still adjusting to the concept/controls of this game.

Heh, wait until you get to see switches that are *just* out of reach. Still the most fun/most frustrating thing in the game is the Water Temple. You will all scream when you reach it.

I shudder to think of what it will be like when I get there in Master Quest.
No matter how obvious the trap, you can't complete the game unless you fall into it.
Yup - if I am remember the game correctly, the Water Temple is probably the thing that most likely will make you kick something.
The Water Temple also contains the choke point I was talking about before. Doing a search just now shows I might not have been the only one.
From one of the FAQs "This has a history for stumping many players. There have been surveys asking people if they quit the game what level did they quit on. 80% said this one."
At least I managed to complete this one. Stupid Majora's Mask
The hardest part about this game, this time through, for me is ajusting from "Metroid Prime" targeting back to OoT targeting.
In Metroid, you had to hold down the targetting button to remain locked on target (at least, I think you did). In OoT, you do not, and it is, in fact, not really the best idea. I am halfway through the temples and I am still trying to retrain myself...

You can change the L-targeting system in Options from Switch to Hold. With Hold set, you have to hold down the L button to keep the targeting active. With Switch (the default) you just push once to select the closest enemy, and press it again to move to the next one. But if you spent all this time getting used to the new setup, you might not want to change now
