Well, Mike Tyson is back in the Boxing scene again. All well and good. His match was preceeded by a pathetic 4 round alleged boxing match with Tonya Harding and some novice fighter who actually got the duke.

So here's my beef...

Boxing is supposed to be a reputable sport. It's supposed to be respected, yet it is rife with personalities and debauchery that would make Brian Gerwitz blush. Don King's backstage workings, the Andrew Golotta saga. How about Ricardo Williams (fighting with a one million dollar guarantee), the great Olympic prospect, getting a replacement opponent for his fight last weekend and got beaten?! "Celebrity Boxing", Mike Tyson, I could go on.

I'm not taking anything away from these atheletes whatsoever. But this is getting mainstream exposure, and Hogan-Rock II barely gets a sneeze of news? I could go on and on about the virtues of a pro wrestler, but this is the wrestling section, so all you fine Wieners already know. But damn it'd be nice if this industry we love could get some respect.

Sorry so long-- just pissed off.

Boy, raw tenth anniversary? Bullshit. Kinda makes it not worth it, don't it.

Boxing is a "leagitimate" sport, matches are won by strength and stamana. This is what the media beleives.

Wrestling is "fixed", matches are won depending on the promoter's wishes. This is what the media beleives.

That's why the media is so high on boxings, and so low on wrestling.

Bingo. There's a reason why the topic of the media's respect for wrestling isn't big on this board...it's widely known fact that the media will never treat our great sport as legitimate, and we accept and understand it. Sucks though, you're right.

Think about it though, what fun would it be if wrestling got that much mainstream coverage? It'd take some of the fun away from being a wrestling fan, IMO.

It's hard for the media to cover wrestling. Do they cover it and break kayfabe? They could but few people would know what the heck they're talking about. Do they cover it with kayfabe? Then they kinda look silly.

I don't know, they do a fine job of discussing the many other fictional shows on tv. You see articles about "Friends" that may talk about the plot and dissect the show, but then also talk about the behind the scenes stuff and the actors and all that. I just read a review of the coming finale of "Oz" where the writer spoke about the plotlines leading into the finale and never felt compelled to break into the article with a disclaimer reading "oh, and by the way none of these people are real prisoners."

True, it's difficult for the mainstream media to cover it because of these reasons. Every once in a while the local UPN station here in Minnesota will mention something during the Sports segment of the news following Smackdown. Since Brock's a hometown boy they like to mention when he's involved in something big. The way they do it seems to concentrate more on how good of a show the guys will put on, not who will beat who. I get the feeling that during that segment they're "in on the joke".

Sports Entertainment.

When Vince coined this term for wrestling was when the media stopped treating it like a 'real' sport. They just had thier eyes opened for them. I don't consider it a sport, it's a tv show. It has writers, it's episodic, and it's predetermined, unlike 'real' sports.

Sports Entertainment... you better get used to it, it's been like this for 10 years and it's NOT gonna change.

Still, wouldn't surprise me if Don King has a stable of writers for promoting Tyson fights...

"Okay Mike, tell him...you're gonna eat his children!"
"Yeah, and his wife!"
"Yeah, the people LOVE that."
"And...uh...bite his ear. It went over HUGE last time..."

Why should wrestling be treated by the mainstream media like its a legitimate sport when it isn't at all. Vince McMahon did everything in his power to show people all the strings and the secrets of wrestling. Fuck they even have a reality tv show that shows kids learning the tricks of the trade. Plus, what is ESPN supposed to do? talk about how quick HHH looked when he put it to that mannequin? Judging by how their TV shows are composed, the WWE is going for mainstream media coverage that will get them controversy and make them the subject of ethical debates on Fox News and maybe a blurb in Entertainment Weekly.

The reason the industry we love gets no respect is because it doesn't want any. That idea got thrown out a long time ago.

Uh, ever been to the south?

Dude, NASCAR and Wrestling get more press then the World Series in some parts of the South. I distinctly remember footage of Juventud Guerrera doing the 450 splash, being commentated by the sports guy on the evening news. Then again, this was when wrestling hit the vein in the '90's, and they only showed WCW footage.

In the name of good taste, I will no longer say anything about people who run wrestling websites and cats.

Oh gee, where do I start? First off, he has no recorded losses in a fight (after training). Now it is impossible to record EVERY time he fought. But he did have many, many recorded fight, and well, never lost.
