I want my team to get to the playoffs -- I truly do.
But I really hate pre-season hype. I mean, yeah, we've got Colon and Koch added, and Crede will be a stud... but everytime I see another "Sox most-improved" just because Kenny Williams made some off-season picks, I cringe.
That could be me being a Sox fan... but does anyone else have the same feeling when they read that for their team?
"We had four couples, eight questions, a refrigerator and that's it." --Chuck Barris, talking about The Newlywed Game on LIVE! With Regis and Kelly
I'm a Red Sox fan, so when Sports Illustrated put Nomar on the cover 2 years ago and said it was the year for the Red Sox, I grew concerned. Then, Nomar went down for the season in spring training. As for the White Sox, they get the break of having 2 Double A teams in their division, an Indians team that is building for next year, and a Twins team that has most of its pitchers with medical concerns, so it should put the White Sox in a good position to win the division.
I'd love for somebody to say the Orioles were the most-improved team. That would mean the front office accomplished something during the off-season. Signing Rick Helling does not make this better.
Americans are a resolute people who have risen to every test of our time. Adversity has revealed the character of our country, to the world and to ourselves. America is a strong nation, and honorable in the use of our strength. We exercise power without conquest, and we sacrifice for the liberty of strangers. Americans are a free people, who know that freedom is the right of every person and the future of every nation. The liberty we prize is not America's gift to the world, it is God's gift to humanity. - President George W. Bush, State of the Union Address, 1/28/2003
