The WB knows it can't combat 60 Minutes or Fox Football Overrun, so last year they ran 7th Heaven: Beginnings to acquaint newer viewers to the older episodes of the series and promote the primary run on Mondays. This year they're doing it with Gilmore Girls, and as I said before, I speculate they'll do the same with Smallville next year. It's a rather smart strategy, creating more viewer loyalty and filling a dead hour without further production costs. How much is The Frog spending on High School Reunion? Whatever it is, it pulled in only .4 above what the GGirls: Beginnings ep did last Sunday two hours earlier for free (I can't imagine an additional license fee is being paid, especially since the production studio and network are under the same corporate umbrella, except for the half of the show owned by Amy Sherman-Palladino's production company.)

As for GGirls being able to "barely fill ari [sic] for the first hour"...HUH? *looks around, confused* Quality: rated as the eighth highest critically acclaimed series on television, promoted by every major critic, with constant calls at ATAS to "wake up." Ratings: third in its time slot beating both NBC and Fox, amazing for The WB...until American Idol came along reintroduced Tuesday night to sucking.

Why not run Angel Beginnings then? Angel is great, but it's Kevin Smith level in its insiderness. I have to expalin for like 30 minutes before anyone new can watch a new episode.

That would work as well, but I think The WB will choose Smallville instead since it's their second-highest rated show and they want to promote it more. With people debating the possible cancellation of Angel, I doubt The Frog will give it that kind of support.

By "shot with a giant cannon", do you mean the cannon shoots *at* you, or do you mean that you are shot *from* the cannon? I'm thinking the former, but the latter might be an interesting punishment...

Our temporary room-mate watches Buffy. We humor her. I try not to admit that I watch it in public.

I haven't seen anything other than this season, and it's an OK show. There isn't much else to watch on Tuesday.

Your analogy is similar to:

"I can already write with my hands, why not my pancreas?"
"They already have beef that I can eat, why not granite?"

I like the fact that Joss believes in continuity even though it bites him in the ass a few times, I'll take that over stupid sitcoms or any of the new crime dramas. Granted, I haven't seen Angel seen two seasons ago, but the net has enough material to keep up at times. Now, to this Gilmore Girls show.

I saw the first episode liked some of it, but I saw the major plot threads progressing through the show. Rory has problems at school, Mother tries to help, but is stupid to do anything about it, Grandparents hopelessly lost in today's society for comedy and tension, school problem ends with Rory figuring it out inject Kevin Smith type dialouge, the end. I've tried to sit through the show, but it annoys me on some level that even I don't understand. Even watching it with my roomate, I sit don't see how this show manages to get the acclaimed it gets. I just think television shows have been really weak since this is the "Reality Era".

A Fan- Still, I would like to get HBO

Those wanting evidence of Angle being cancelled, how about this. Angel is being pulled by WB for the rest of the sweeps period.

I know that's not proof, but it doesn't sound like a vote of confidence to me.

I checked my local WB website and while Angel is postponed next week (as far ahead as I could look), its being replaced with the Birds of Prey finale, which makes sense since Angel did get its timeslot. Also, it at least shows that the WB does care a little about their fanbase, since they didn't have to go out of their way to air that. Then again, with all this rumor-mongering, I don't know which way is up anymore. And of course, (SLIGHT SPOILER!!!) there's always the possibility that they are just messing with the show schedule to throw off the UPN Buffy continuity with respect to any crossovers.(END SLIGHT SPOILERS!!!)

Edit: Why can't I code my posts properly???

To avoid any potential spoilers:

This week provides a natural break for Angel seeing as some major storyline developement happens in the next episode (after the break). So, ostenibly, it makes sense that if you need to break it up for the Birds of Prey finale, you do it right before the big story arch, so that you don't interupt it, and you don't lose any momentum it provides heading into the final stretch.

Hmm, I thought sweeps week was about producing the highest rating possible so that you could get the best advertising rates that you can. I didn't really think that TV guys gave a rat's ass about "natural story breaks" and caring about a 'Birds of Prey' fanbase so large that the show got cancelled.

Silly me, I just thought this was the period when networks brought out the big guns to get big ratings.

BTW, I think you will find Angel is pre-empted for two weeks. Pretty long break, isn't it?

(I somehow doubt that Friends will get pre-empted, I don't care what kind of 'storyline sense' it makes. They also could have timed out the episodes where the 'storyline break' could have come anywhere on the calender they would have liked'. I still say this is not a vote of confidence.)

Actually, Joss does take a long break between Feb-March and then starts the last 7 or 6 episodes in April. Buffy and Angel end on the same week plus those shows are the last two season finales of the year. The Networks tend to disappear around the second or third week in May. Buffy and Angel tend to end on the third if not the fourth week. Plus, Friends is not storyline based, its a sitcom, ER does tend to take a break which is storyline based even though it doesn't make much sense.

The first part of Febuary is where all the shit happens. but by the second week it dies down. You have to realize that the second week in Febuary is the one where all the shit mainly happens on Angel and Buffy. After a major plot point happens, they take a break, because the fans need air to breath such as Jenny Calendar's death, Hush and Buffy in the asylum were in the middle of Febuary and then there was a break to mull things over. The only one where it didn;t happen was when Joyce died and the next episode was the funeral.

I'm sorry ges7184, I just don't see your evidence at all, this is all normal operating procedure for these sohws. They are bringing back Birds, because the fans wanted and since Angel was going to get a rest anyway, they are doing. I hope they get it done and over with Birds sucked.

A Fan- I'm sorry, WB is not going to cancel Angel.

Saying that Angel gets a two week hiatus vs. saying there's no new episodes till March doesn't make the situation sound as bleak, even if its all the same.

A non-spoiler recap of the above tv guide article says that it looks like Buffy is gone (duh), and Angel is sitting on the fence, with a final decision in May. However, Boreanaz is confident the show will be back. Take that all for what its worth.

And it also plugs the Angel season 1 DVD out today.

If Angel gets canned in May, they won't have time to change the season finale to a series finale, will they?

Frankly, I'm not as concerned about Angel getting renewed as I am about where all this leaves the chances for another Buffy spin-off. If Angel is questionable, then who would want to pick up the next Whedon series?

Looking again at The WB's development, I switch my guess to Angel not being renewed, though it's still too early to tell. They have very few open hours (Sunday @ 9/8 and Wednesday @ 9/8, which of course are both no stranger to Angel; plus Thursday, which will skew towards reality and Friday which will skew young) and with the Young MacGyver probably finding its way to either the Wednesday or the Sunday slot (again with Dawson's slot being filled by Smallville most likely when the GGirls spin-off takes Tuesday 9/8) it comes down to whether Jordan Levin likes one of his new hour-longs better than Angel, and more importantly the cost to produce a newer show vs. what he has now. I don't know if Angel costs as much as Buffy (I doubt it does,) but if it's in the same neighborhood it's dead. The WB is actually making money this year, and they'd like to keep that up in 2003/04.

FYI: I really don't care which way the Frog goes, as I don't watch the show. It won't pain me to see it leave or return; I'm just throwing in my two cents worth (or more) or analysis. I will say this: TW chief Dick Parsons and WB Entertainment Prexy Jordan Levin are both very anti-reality series, but if Angel, or any other WB show, gets replaced with a reality show I will be pissed. The network should be applauded for attempting to create quality scripted drama and keeping the reality shows to a limited amount.

I now shut my mouth until upfronts in May.

Given that Gellar and Hannigan's salaries had to reflect their burgeoning movie careers, as well as the probable costs for flying Head in from England, I'd think its a safe bet that Angel is not in the same financial neighborhood as far as production costs. Unless Boreanaz wants to make Valentine 2, that is.

What's this about a young MacGyver???

A Fan,

I think you're missing my point. It's not about taking a break in new shows. ALL series do that. (Buffy was pre-empted last month I believe) It's the timing. This is the sweeps period. This is where you want to have your best shows on display. This is the time you have no reruns. You put your best ratings performers out there. I'm saying that the fact that they apparently don't think that Angel is going to be one of those strong rating performers, choosing to go with a cancelled series instead, doesn't exactly show strong faith in the show and its ability to perform well in the ratings.

If this was after the sweeps period, and they did the exact same thing, it wouldn't be anything (because they either show a rerun of Angel, or they can show a new Birds of Prey, may as well use the new show in the can). It's the fact that it is sweeps that is the major deal, at least in my mind.

Nothing is ever a sure bet with minor networks like WB. I mean, at the end of the day, they don't have any sure-fire ratings winners, so a lot of it will probably depend on how many new shows the WB wants to try to plug in. Still, I figure a show that is pulled for sweeps is a show that is on the bubble.
