What was the best sleeper hit of 2002 for any respective system? Since I've got a Playstation, stuff like GTA:VC and Tekken 4 came with a lot of fanfare and hype from the net and still turned out to be great games.

Basically, what games do you guys think are great but don't nearly enough love from the mainstream?

IMO, the two top sleepers for PS2 this year were Kingdom Hearts and Ratchet and Clank, awesome games that I only saw a few commercials for around December.

I'd have to pick Ratchet and Clank out of the two, because it was just more fun to play, and Kingdom Hearts felt way too easy towards the end.

I think Ace Combat 4 for PS2 has to be up there... I heard almost nothing about that game before I got it, and I put just about every other game down for a while once I started it...

The following post expresses the opinions of a raving Jerichoholic. He is biased, opinionated and bitter. You have been warned.

I know it was shoved down the collective throats of anyone who watches Raw and SmackDown, but other than that, Shut Your Mouth got no love whatsoever. That was, without a doubt, the best wrestling game ever, and nobody mentioned it at all.

Suikoden III was tremendous, but outside the gaming/RPG community not many people know nor care about it. It's certainly surpassed most all of my collection as the game that I MUST finally beat.

I do know that there was some bit of fanfare around it (and the half dozen RPGs that came out around it), but I also know, if I weren't an RPG fan, I would never have heard of it.

Dynasty Tactics for PS2 is an awesome stratagy game that no one ever heard of. It's sorta like Romance of the Three Kingdoms that focuses only on battles. I will never forget when I did a nine step combo that killed four armies and slaughtered over a hundred thousand troops, it just makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

After looking forward to playing it for months and months, I have to say I didn't much enjoy Mark of Kri. It was an ok game, but damn, it was just too hard. I mean, I suck and all, but hard is hard. (Now astrobstrd will talk about beating it and make me cry.)

As for my vote... aside from kidbrooklyn and a friend of mine, I didn't really hear anything at all about NBA Live 2003. I like it.

I don't remember seeing a *whole* lot of commercials for Splinter Cell... but it's a damn good game regardless.

I have to agree with Ace Combat 4, and I really enjoy playing NCAA2k3 college basketball. SD4:SYM is the ebst wrestling game I have every played, and I only saw commercials during wrestling for it, so I agree that it should count too. As far as disappointments, I really did not like Medal of Honor that much, I know I am probably in the minority on that one.

I am _loving_ Wild Arms 3. Easily the best surprise I had all year.

Virtua Fighter 4 had plenty of TV commercials, but still got overlooked by many Tekken-heads. Pity, as it's superb.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Most people dismissed the game because of the license, the title or whatever reason. Most people missed out on a game with a robust hand to hand combat engine with weapons, interactive environments, and interesting enemies. Having a plot that closely follows events from the show and real voice actors is just icing on the cake for fans of the show. But you don't have to be a fan to appreciate the best 3D brawler in years. And it's no surprise that the fighting feels so balanced since former developers of Street Fighter 2 worked on this game. Look out for the upcoming Indiana Jones game that uses the same engine.

I agree about Buffy. I don't even watch the show but the game is really fun. With the price marked down I would advise anyone who likes beat em ups to give it a try.

I want to second the vote for Sly Cooper. I picked it up around the same time as GTA: VC and SM:SYM so it didn't get a lot of play until recently.

But what a fun game. I actually found myslef sad to finish it because I wanted more.

I am not sure this qualifies as a "sleeper", but I really enjoyed Hitman 2. It is everything I enjoy about a first person shooter, and has very little I dislike.

I would say NCAA College Football every season because it doesn't get nearly as much attention as Madden, and while Madden is a superb game I prefer College Football every year.

I rented Hunter for GCN and spent a Saturday night with four friends (one of which a fellow White Wolf fan) blitzing as far as we could get. Fun game, but it felt like Resident Evil crossed with Gauntlet. I can't speak for the single player, but you can only punk out *so* many zombies with a shotgun before you need to move on. Pick it up at Electronics Boutique for $10 (check the EB games spam thread).

I didn't really touch much that wasn't highly touted this year, but on PC, Extreme Warfare Revenge kept me way busier than it had any right to.

I'm up there with Buffy.

Still stuck on the last level, on that koddamn fire bridge.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage.

Count me in with those who loved Mark of Kri.

Way of the Samurai was very good, too... a little annoying at times, but the swordfighting ruled.

NCAA Football was excellent this year.
