I really hope that this is the right place to talk about this, since its wrestling related.

Anywhos... How many wieners have gone around and tried to do their own little matches? Do you like to choreograph before hand... or do you just go at it? Do you take sick bumps, or work out some psychology? Are you slow and methodical, or do you hit it hard and hit it fast (sorry, Rock's shirt was stuck in my mind).

Anyhows, if so... share your experiences.

If anyone wants, I made a little clip package of a 'match' my roomate and I did in Dec. Just one of those impromptu things.. and we put out matresses in the hallways... because the last few weeks really hurt without them there. =P

Anyhows, if you want it... I could send it via streamload... If you don't know what it is, you could do a websearch for it, since I don't think I should promote a site on the forums. Yea.. if you want it, just post your streamload account name... I guess its worth a laugh, since its shoddy and ghetto.

Indeed, I'm not sure if this is a topic to be talking about...

I've done quite a bit of backyard, and it's how I developed my love for wrestling. And now, I have a spot in the Hart wrestling school. WHEEEEEEEE! Though, they don't know about my backyard background as it's not something one talkes about.

Anyway, being 100 pounds at the age of 14, I was the guy who could be thrown around with ease, and I enjoyed it. So, I was asked by my brother and his best friend if I wanted to do some backyard wrestling, and be the guy to LOSE! I agreed, as it would give me something FUN to do after school.

And so the shows began. We got a video camera, booked a card, and ran the show. For the first card, there were four wrestlers, and the announcer (my brother). We had a tournament, and I was in the first ever EBYC match against Tank (17 at the time, I beleive). I lost after about 6 minutes in a terrible match, as neither of us knew anything, and I wasn't even watching wrestling at the time. Though, I hit a 'top rope' frog splash. Being that there was snow all over the ground, though, it was quite safe.

I loved it. As bad as I was, I loved it. I was the worst of the bunch, but because I loved it so, I strove to be better. And I worked, watched, trained, and grew. Every match I had got better and better. A little over two (or three) years from my first match, I had one against Tank again. We had both grown considerably, though I had grown so much that I, with all my ego, had surpassed everyone in skill by far, but I still wanted to wrestle in EBYC because it was fun, and because it was with my friends. I wrestles twice that day, my first match with John, which was a fantastic match, over 10 minutes long being one of the longest EBYC matches ever, and it was good! And John had very little experiance.

And then my match with Tank. This match was to be special, and I knew it was going to be before I started. Almost 25 minutes we went at it, doing technical spots, chain wrestling spots, and even flying spots (supplied by me, as Tank is a little big to fly, but he acutally hit an off-the-ladder splash to end the match). During the match, we did a tope-into-a-swinging-chair spot (like during the Benoit-Jericho ladder match at the 2001 Rumble), and I did my first ever full-fledged blade job. It looked fantastic, and you know what? It was safe. As many spots, all the blood, everything... NO ONE was hurt.

That's what was great about EBYC. It was friends going out there to film us doing 'cards', and they were SAFE! Even with me doing sick bumps, even with Tank and others taking massive shots with chairs and such, it was safe. And I'm proud to say, outside of one incident with me, no one was ever hurt doing EBYC.

It was fun. It was what got me into wrestling. I will never forget my backyard experiances...

(Edit)

As the poster below me said... backyard wrestling is EVIL.

Sure... yes, it is. That is, if you're doing stuff that you're not confident that you can safely do. I think it's a whole judgement thing here. Like, the one time I got hurt (dislocated shoulder, though I'd already had problems with it in the past) was because I did something that I didn't feel good about in the first place. I soon learned never to do something that I was uncomfortable with again.

Now, ANYONE can say 'go out and get some training and wrestle there', but come one... there is very, VERY few places where you can do that! When one loves wrestling so much... and he lives in a place where there is no wrestling (Anywhere in Canada outside of Montreal, Calgary, and Winnipeg), what can you do? ... There's some real wrestling and martial arts, but it's NO WHERE near the same. Hell, doing acting and circus training is closer to wrestling.

All those anti-backyard people out there... ... you're all sheep.

So what, are you going to tell me what kids can't play 'red rover' in the school yard anymore? ... Oh wait... you already did.

I don't mean to sound like a dick here, but unless you are properly trained, you shouldn't do this. The reasons for this are two-fold. One, you could seriously hurt yourself or on-lookers. You mentioned doing "sick bumps", but even "safe" moves like suplexes and hip tosses can be exceptionally dangerous. Pulled muscles and broken necks are still possible on mattresses. Second, you make *me* the not backyard-wrestling fan look like more of an idiot than I already am. No one is going to hire you based on these things (read "Have a Nice Day" for a nice insider view on this). If an accident does occur, you become nothing more than another roadblock for non-fan's to make fun of us with.

If you really want this, get training...and good luck. If you just want to spar, take a martial art or amateur wrestling.

No, you aren't being a dick at all, so no worries. This really is something that you should get onto a soap box for... because it is so dangerous.

I can't say that I've had proper wrestling training, but I did Judo for a while, and used to teach it as well... I did do the whole amateur wrestlting and MMA fighting/grappling as well. It's not proper training... and I am not trying to convey that I feel I am a wrestler, or anything.

I love the profession and would love to get into it more. Unfortunately, once I'm done at the AFA this year, I owe the Air Force at least 5yrs of my life. After that, if I have the chance to go to a wrestling school, I'd love to do it.

Actually, I'm glad that you brought up the aspect of safety. Everything in wrestling is dangerous... just a fraction of an inch can cost you your life, let alone your career. I cringed as I saw Kurt Angle come off of the release german suplex from Chris Benoit tonight, it really looked like he was a mere inch from breaking his not but not fully rotating in time.

As Ender was saying... sometimes, you can't help yourself. I am not in the position where I can just up and leave and do what I want to... the military pretty much owns me. You just do it because you love it... and some people want to be entertained. It may not be the smartest thing to do... but when you enjoy something so much... you just can't help yourself. You love the thrill, you love the cheers, you love that small taste of the 'real thing' that belongs to do during that one moment in time.

@Ender
Would you happen to have your card available for viewing or sale?

Thanks for your comments, it looks like this will make for good debates. Anyhows, I think that I'll be receiving quite a few wiener verbal tirades for this topic. Hehe.. well, it might be fun to hear some of them. :)

Ok. I'll take BOTH sides of the issue here.

Pros:

It's all in good fun. I was the "Vince McMahon" for a backyard league of friends for awhile (due to some leg surgery a few years before, I had lost alot of mobility which I'm only really now starting to get back, I certainly didn't have enough to "wrestle" "safely"), as well as the head referee. It was all in good fun for the most part, especially the set up of angles and the ilk (you think HHH is bad, try organizing a fed where NOBODY wants to job).

It was fun. LOTS of fun. It really kept me involved in wrestling for a few years where I wasn't all that interested, and it was a tremendous rush. The fact that we came up with "sophisticated" storylines was a real high point for my early writing efforts (like the fact that my surgery was part of my character, and one time the main "face" came out and put me in an ankle lock until I "passed out").

The stuff we were doing was on the "pretty dangerous" scale of dangerousness. They did moves like dropkicks and hip tosses, some mat and submission stuff (a few of them were high school wrestlers). The most we'd ever use weapons was an occasional chair or bat (most of us were in theater, so we were well aware of "selling" and how NOT to hit somebody), and usually even then only in the context of some storyline. So it was all in good fun, and we got hurt much worse playing football than we ever did wrestling (in that the only injury came when one of my friends tripped over a stump and seperated his shoulder. And for the record, it was really, really, REALLY stupid of me to play football. Incredibly. But I loved it.)

CONS: We could very well have gotten hurt. Very easily. Even I could have, and I was rarely ever involved in any "action" (the anklelock hurt like a sumbitch). The fact that we weren't "hardcore" didn't matter. It was not the smartest thing in the world to be back suplexing each other every which way.

While it was effective at being fun and helping us to blow off steam there were far more constructive ways to do it. Yeah, we all loved wrestling, but that didn't mean that we should have tried to do it.

If anyone would have gotten hurt, that would have been awful, and I'm sure wrestling would have taken the full brunt of the blame (though "football" was never blamed for my other friends injury, and we continued to play long after it happened).

So who's to say? I mean, I don't think there is a one of those people who will tell you that they regret the stuff that we did, but is it stupid? Yeah, it really was. Maybe that's why we always fell back on roleplaying? All the storylines without actually getting hit with a chair?

Back when I lived in Arizona, we used to knock each other silly with cookie sheets, chairs etc. I can now dish out a chairshot like a pro...
Oh, and that same year, I powerbombed a friend off of a 4 foot wall through a table. That hurt a lot- we did not do anything like that again....

We never had an actual federation or even necessarily coherent matches but a few friends and I used to wrestle in my backyard all the time. This was the late 80s, so the product in general was safer (though by no means safe) but we never had any serious injuries. The only one I can recall was the time a kid had me in a Boston Crab and his brother clotheslined him and he fell over backwards without letting go of the hold, snapping me over on my back and neck. I laid there for a couple of minutes, afraid to try and move, but then I figured out I was fine and continued the match. I ended up winning when I ascended 2 haybales and unleashed Spike Dudley's flying stomp onto the crotch of the guy who had thrown the clothesline.

The only other time I can recall anything going wrong is when I went to do the move where the Nasty Boys pulled the guy's arm through his legs and then yanked on it and flipped him. I didn't think that would actually work without the other guy jumping and just expected it to crotch the kid I was wrestling against. Instead, he did the full flip and landed on his back. He was fine but it surprised the @#$% out of me.

I never understood these kids who lawyers claim didn't know wrestling was fake. Even when I was in 3rd grade and thought wrestling was real, I could pile drive somebody without hurting them because I was smart enough to realize that if their head hit the ground, it was going to cause serious problems. Safe or not, though, wrestling is a heck of a lot better exercise than baseball, which was the only summer sports option we had in my town.

My crazy friends and I have done the backyard thing since 1997. Most of our shit took place between 97 and 99, but we've done a few in the past few years.

We have never done a lot of "hardcore" stuff, instead going for interesting storylines and funniness. Since our events are so spread out these days, we just try to have good matches with some humour sprinkled in.

Case in point: We did some wrestling last month. We opened with a sweet submission match, then filled the rest rest with comedy matches, like a "Bottle of Acid on a Pole" match and a "Syringe on a Pole" match.

Backyard wrestling gets a bad rap due to vids like "Best of Backyard Wrestling," but some of us are just having fun. We do some crazy shit, but most of it is harmless.

My friends and I also run our own backyard fed. Nothing big, we mostly just do it to have fun. They all get taped so we can go back later and watch the goofs. No one has ever been injured and anything too hardcore is frowned upon. Although I was the first to bring hardcore into our little federation, hence the name.
We only have a problem getting 2 or 3 people to job, I take the opportunity to put someone over all the time, however. As of our last video I had still only won 1 match, and that just happened to be a ladder match so I've never even pinned someone. I figure as long as we look good doing it, it doesn't matter to me who wins.
Of course, HCJ-ANIA is coming soon, and may god have mercy on the fool it runs wild on...

I just wish I knew why people get so worked up about backyard wrestling, yet really, what kid did not grow up playing full-speed tackle football without pads or helmets growing up, or some form of street hockey, or boxing, or any other sport which ought not to be done without proper supervision and padding and training. Should you piledrive your friend through a table in your backyard? Of course not. Should you drive your friend into a lamppost at high speed to drive him out of bounds? Of course not. To be it's the same difference. Children and young adult males (and some females) will always do stupid things. As long as A) You don't think this is how you're on the way to Wrestlemania and B) don't sue anyone if/when you hurt yourself, go out and have fun.

I do find it odd that wrestling is the only thing people get so righteously angry about non-trained people doing. I'd love to see ads featuring Brian Urlacher telling people not to try his game at home.

During Soccer season, practices would start at 3:30, but school got out at 2:30. So they guys would usually take the 5 minute walk after school to my house and wrestle on the trampoline. No hardcore junk, just straight wrestling (with the occasional cardboard box). It was pretty cool- no one has ever gotten injured and this was our 4th year doing it. I've actually booked a card that we want to video tape (using about 5 guys) but we've never gotten around to it. Maybe this spring!

Y'know, a lot of weeks people complain about WWE TV. It's like "man, why did Shelton lose that 12 minute match to whomever" or "why did Cena and Edge WRESTLE again?" or "I'm sick of seeing 6 man tags on Raw," etc.
